Subject: Music in Clonakilty Co Cork From: GUEST,Captain Swing Date: 10 Sep 01 - 04:09 PM I've just returned from Clonakilty Co.Cork where there is a superb nightly music scene featuring a range of different types of music of a very high quality and it's generally all free. Has anyone else been there? If you haven't, it's well worth a vis |
Subject: RE: Music in Clonakilty Co Cork From: brid widder Date: 10 Sep 01 - 04:32 PM I visited Clonakilty about 5 years ago...yes it was good, interesting too, being the birthplace of Michael Collins. I remember a bar in an old garage, behind a hotel...music, singing and a brilliant storyteller....in gaelic...I didn't understand a word but was transfixed!I'm not sure if it's still there but I stayed in a tiny hostel...actually a shared cottage, thanks for renewing good memories |
Subject: RE: Music in Clonakilty Co Cork From: Matthew Edwards Date: 10 Sep 01 - 07:53 PM I was in Clonakilty last year, and agree about the quality of the music. There was also the treat of hearing R'n'B led by none other than Noel Redding (ex Jimi Hendrix Band) and now living a quiet life in the country. |
Subject: RE: Music in Clonakilty Co Cork From: Mrrzy Date: 10 Sep 01 - 07:58 PM Since we were leaving Bandon we HAD to go through Clonakilty, and Ballinascarthy, or however they are pronounced. Wouldn't have been the Musical Tour else. [no points for knowing this song...] Can't recall but I think it was the latter, rather than the former, that had the pub called the Whistle Stop or something? Where was the music you heard, Capt. Swing? |
Subject: RE: Music in Clonakilty Co Cork From: GUEST,Captain Swing Date: 11 Sep 01 - 04:36 PM We would happily amble between De Barras Folk Club (which is not actually a folk club but superb venue hosting an eclectic range of music from trad Irish to heavy metal) and O'Donnovan's Hotel which was made up of three venues. The front bar had occasional music(country, Irish, cabaret). Behind that is 'The Venue' which is a modern place generally featuring electric bands but also acoustic blues, ragtime and flamenco. Behind that is 'An Teach Beg', a small pub (probably the garage mentioned earlier) which hosted trad sessions and story telling. But also there was Shanley's Piano Bar, Bernie's and the Emmet Hotel which had nightly music. Superb - and I haven't even mantioned the food yet. |
Subject: RE: Music in Clonakilty Co Cork From: Les from Hull Date: 12 Sep 01 - 04:01 PM Swingy, old mate - we happened into Clonakilty (Cloich Na Coiltre) some years ago and it just happened to be the night they had Andy Irvine at De Barra. Talk about lucky. Yes it's a fine town and thanks for bringing back the memories. Hope to see you on Saturday on the Folk Train. Les |

Subject: RE: Music in Clonakilty Co Cork From: GUEST,Captain Swing Date: 16 Sep 01 - 03:32 PM Too true Egmond, but it was a toss up between a train and a curry and the curry won this time. |
Subject: RE: Music in Clonakilty Co Cork From: Egmond Date: 16 Sep 01 - 06:21 PM In my book a curry must win every time!! |

Subject: RE: Music in Clonakilty Co Cork From: GUEST,Captain Swing Date: 18 Sep 01 - 02:41 PM For once your, usually impecable, memory deserts you, Eg. It was the Light of Asia or the Asiatic Lighthouse, as Arnold used to call it. |
Subject: RE: Music in Clonakilty Co Cork From: GUEST,Guest PD Date: 19 Sep 01 - 09:20 AM Well it was a Bl---- good curry anyway!! |
