Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: wysiwyg Date: 13 Sep 01 - 03:53 PM It's odd what will bring the right kind of tears. Just a little bit ago it was hearing they'd played The Star Spangled Banner in England at the changing of the guard. Now you coming to say this. Thank you. These things help. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: katlaughing Date: 13 Sep 01 - 04:44 PM Oh, MIkey, thank you so much for letting us know. I went out and about today and it was as though I was in a surreal landscape. My mind kept thinking how can these people carry on business as usual, why aren't they mourning and being solemn? My steps were measured and slow, every movement deliberate, yet not thought out, numbed and subdued. It means a lot to hear of this and also, Susan, about the changing of the guard, thanks. luvyakat |

Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: GUEST Date: 13 Sep 01 - 05:38 PM We're having a day of mourning here in the UK too - though I don't really know what that will mean. One thing is that we're having a 3 minute silence at 11am. We quite often have 1 or 2 minute silences, this will be the first 3 minute one I know of. I for one will observe it with great sadness, and thoughts for you all |
Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: GUEST Date: 13 Sep 01 - 05:45 PM There is an emoticon for crying... :~( |

Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: Susanne (skw) Date: 13 Sep 01 - 06:08 PM Nothing quite as big, but most of Germany observed a five-minute silence this morning (roughly 5pm US time, don't know about the time zones), and during the past two days many people have gathered outside the American Embassy in Berlin and other buildings to pay their respects. There have been memorial services all over germany, tonight a chain of lights in honour of the victims was formed here in Kiel, and there have been calls for lights in windows on Saturday. Many people over here are afraid this may turn into a major war, and I'm sure many more are praying for peace in their hearts. No good for anybody will come of the destruction of yet more innocent lives. I'll put candles in my windows on Saturday and think of those who died horribly, and those who live on. |
Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 13 Sep 01 - 06:53 PM As far as I know the day of mourning is to be Europe wide, I have just heard on the radio that all TV & radio channels are to observe a 3 minute silene at 11 AM UK time Friday, as somebody said earlier, a 1 minute silence is usual on remembrance day (11th November), but this is the first time we have ever held a 3 minute silence. |
Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: CarolC Date: 13 Sep 01 - 08:27 PM Here's my thank you to all of you outside of the US who are sharing our grief and sorrow, and who are giving us your compassion and your support.
For some reason, for me, tears aren't coming easily about all of this. But whenever I read a post about things like this, some tears come, and it feels like a healing thing.
So thank you. With all of my heart. Carol |

Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: GUEST Date: 13 Sep 01 - 08:50 PM WAR IS FUCKED UP AND PEOPLE DIE BUT AMERICA AND OTHER COUNTRIES WHO TRY TO DO GOOD FACE BACKLASH LIKE THAT AND ITS INNOCENT PEOPLE WHO GET HURT NOT THE PEOPLE WHO CAUSE THE CONFLICTS :(( |
Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: Jeri Date: 13 Sep 01 - 09:19 PM All innocents who die simply because some monster wants to make a point deserve to be mourned. The innocents who die in any war deserve the same. This particular day, tomorrow, will be for the ones who were taken by the Sep 11th attacks. Thank you, to those in other places who see the victims as humans who just happen to be Americans. There's enough hate in the world, and hate honors no one. I'd rather remember the people who died with love. |
Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: CarolC Date: 13 Sep 01 - 09:20 PM GUEST,COMMUNISTIC SOCIALIST FELLER, you may have a good point. In fact, you probably do. But we're human here, too, and we're going to experience human emotions as a result of recent events. Hopefully, we'll learn some important lessons from them, too. |
Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: DougR Date: 14 Sep 01 - 02:19 AM That's good news. Thanks for letting us know. DougR |
Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: Mikey joe Date: 14 Sep 01 - 04:39 AM There is a three minute silence at 11 o' clock across the EU. I have just learned (I now live in Scotland) that pubs across Ireland are to close for the day. No one is complaining about this, everyone feels it is right to close offices government depts. and yes even our pubs as a mark of respect. We can all have a drink together in better times. They will come. Mj |

Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: sian, west wales Date: 14 Sep 01 - 06:10 AM I've just come back from the chapel in our small college here. There was nothing planned, and term hasn't started yet so there aren't many about, but about 30 people gathered spontaneously to keep the Silence. I also see that there was a prayer service on Wednesday afternoon, "A Time of Prayer for the People of America" (which I missed as I was away). I've also just seen in the Toronto Globe and Mail (on-line)that Canada's day of mourning is the first since 1967. Also, in Brussels, Romano Prodi, president of the EU's executive commission, will lead a 3-minute silence; 14 other EU candidate nations have also been invited. In Asia, "South Korea has declared a national day of mourning, the first time it has done so for another country. And in Africa, the Portuguese-speaking nation of Cape Verde — located off the coast of Senegal — has made a similar declaration." There are a lot of people sharing your grief. sian, west Wales

Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: CarolC Date: 14 Sep 01 - 06:23 AM I just watched some of the three minutes of silence on television. They showed locations in Belgium, England, Germany, and France. It was heartening to see. Thank you, everyone who participated. |

Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: Calach Date: 14 Sep 01 - 09:46 AM My bus stopped at the side of the road for 3 minutes at 11.00 am this morning....... Near the end, my mobile phone rang. I switched it off, and continued the silence. It had been my American Girlfriend, calling from Kansas, to say hi..... IRONIC. |
Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: RangerSteve Date: 14 Sep 01 - 09:54 AM I can't add anything to what's already been said. But I can add my thanks. |
Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 14 Sep 01 - 04:42 PM Across New Hampshire and I think much of the US, bells rang and a moment of silence occurred today at noon. Even our little elementary school took part. A child asked me why we don't get the day off, and all I could think of to answer was that we must show the world that we will go on. But thanks, so much, to the rest of the world for your show of love and support. |
Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: brid widder Date: 14 Sep 01 - 04:58 PM In the Hospice where I work patients, most very ill, and staff gathered in the chapel, to observe this time, across our country in small groups, in large gatherings or alone.... everyone I have spoken to today took part....we are thinking about you all. |
Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: DougR Date: 14 Sep 01 - 06:46 PM I thought the service from the National Cathedral in Washington, D. C. was very moving. The young lady who sang "America the Beautiful," accompanied by an excellent 12 string guitarist was excellent and the show of unanimity among so many faiths was a sight to see. DougR |
Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: GUEST,John Gray/Australia Date: 14 Sep 01 - 07:41 PM Australia has declared a national day of mourning for tomorrow. Both for the massive death toll of Americans and for the, so far, 91 missing Australians. Our gov't has also reaffirmed our obligation under the ANZUS treaty, a treaty between the US, Oz & NZ for mutual support & assistance in times of war. Because we supported the effort in the Gulf War, with a military presence, we also feel threatened by Middle-East generated terrorism. Our military has gone up one step in its degree of readiness, to State Amber. Our Prime Minister, John Howard, was in Washington DC when the Pentagon was hit. He was able to bring back a first hand account of the tradegy and mood in the US. JG / F.M.E. |
