Subject: alternate lyrics to Minstral Boy From: GUEST,Wolverin99@aol.com Date: 23 Sep 01 - 12:03 PM If you have ever watched The man who would be king you can see Sean Connery singing what appears to be the Minstral Boy. But if you listen to the lyrics you can tell that it is something completly different. I am looking for other lyrics to the song The minstral boy. I know the tune is very old and I have found references to both Scotland and Ireland, but I still find the same lyrics. Mr. Connery has yet to return an email. The Minstral Boy to war has gone in the ranks of dead you shall find him His fathers sword he has girded on His wild harp thrown behind him etc... thanks Mike |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: alternate lyrics to Minstral Boy From: guinnesschik Date: 23 Sep 01 - 12:31 PM Gee, I'd like to know, too, 'cause if I remember correctly, the lyrics in TMWWBK sounded more Scottish. Could'a' been just that Connery was singin' 'em. Any ideas? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: alternate lyrics to Minstral Boy From: Sorcha Date: 23 Sep 01 - 12:32 PM Confused, here. You quoted the most common set of lyrics, are they the ones you want or the ones you DON'T want? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: alternate lyrics to Minstral Boy From: guinnesschik Date: 23 Sep 01 - 12:41 PM I understood it to mean the ones that weren't wanted. I've also looked for the alternate lyrics (that I'm guessing are older) and can't seem to find 'em anywhere. I bet Sorcha can find 'em...or knows 'em! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: alternate lyrics to Minstral Boy From: Sorcha Date: 23 Sep 01 - 12:47 PM hmmm. I found these lyrics with help from an old thread, but I am still not sure it's what is wanted. A quote from what is wanted would help. |

Search The+minstral+boy. Bearing in mind that Kiplins charecters in the Man Who would be king were ex soldiers then the song could be a soldiers version. Gareth |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: alternate lyrics to Minstral Boy From: guinnesschik Date: 23 Sep 01 - 12:52 PM Thanks, but that's the version I have. I may need to watch the movie again to get some of the words so I can search like that... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: alternate lyrics to Minstral Boy From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 23 Sep 01 - 01:06 PM It's a hymn: The Son of God goes forth to war, written by Reginald Heber in 1812. There are two tunes at the Cyber Hymnal (see link), neither of which is The Moírin, to which Thomas Moore set his Minstrel Boy. Certainly, though, the hymn was sung to that tune in the film, and is, I gather, often sung to it in religious services. Whether or not Heber knew the tune I have no idea. Incidentally, there has been a lot of discussion here in the past about Moore's song, (and his lyric has been posted many times) though you need to search for minstrel, not "minstral, to find most of it! |
