It appears that it's actually going to happen.

I'm driving to Boston on Thursday, meeting my son and daughter at Logan and flying over on Icelandic (Our slogan: "Nobody's mad at Iceland!"), arriving at Heathrow (spelling?) Friday, late morning. flying back the following Thursday (the 11th) leaving early afternoon.

Once we get there, our schedule is pretty loosey-goosey. Have a rental car; hoping to work our way north as far as a little of Scotland, and back, checking out tourist attractions, old castles and the like, and interesting pubs (particularly those with folk music of some sort) as we go. We don't have much of any reservations for places to sleep and such. We figure, between being outside the normal tourist season and with the fall-off in tourism due to recent events, we'll be able to find lodgings.

Would love to hear suggestions as to what to do, where to go (but be gentle), etc. I'll be checking mail and the 'Cat last probable early Thursday morning, US.

Picked up some 20-pound notes today, for use in places that sell Beer but don't take credit cards. Kinda purty.

If you make it to Glasgow (Scotland), and are looking for a singing session - Wednesday night - 8pm St Andrew's In The Square - it's a cracking session...

Might be a bit tight for getting back to Heathrow for Thursday in one piece.

There's a lot of stuff to see/do in 6 days...

Have you been over here before? Might help in suggesting what to see/avoid...

Hello Midchuck,

If you fancy heading north via beautiful but tourist-free Shropshire (about a third of the way down the border with Wales - look for Shrewsbury) then my farmhouse is available, and we'll find some sessions locally as well. I've PM'd my telephone numbers - give me a shout if there's anything I can do as long as you promise not to upset the squirrels in my garden (a woodchuck is like a little squirrel isn't it?)

If you are heading to Scotland a good half way point could well be Ingleton Folk Weekend Oct 5/7

Worth stopping over? Could be a few other 'catters there.

Regarding the currency:

If you start handing those notes over in pubs you will shortly be hearing the traditional phrase

"A b%^&y twenty, have ye nothing smaller?"

break a few up into fivers asap. :)

Also this is a good moment to have your trouser pockets re-inforced as we dont have a one pound note anymore and instead use slugs of milled copper which are destructive on thin cloth :)

Alas Maidenhead Folk meets on a Thursday but I believe Herga is on a Wednesday and Nettlebed on a Monday and both less than inch from London by OS map :D

Herga's on Mondays, while Sharp's and Uxbridge are Tuesday clubs.
