Subject: Happy 75th Chuck Berry From: Steve Latimer Date: 18 Oct 01 - 08:25 AM I just heard on the radio that Chuck Berry turned 75 today. We recently had a "King of Rock" thread. If I had to pick one artist I Chuck would get my vote. I truly believe that Rock And Roll could not have happened without him.

Subject: RE: Happy 75th Chuck Berry From: catspaw49 Date: 18 Oct 01 - 03:06 PM Ah yeah.....Good ol' Chuck. Pretty damn influential in getting rock off the ground. I guess he's always been ahead of his time in everything. Remember back in 1990? Berry was accused of installing hidden cameras in the ladies room at his Missouri-based restaurant. Proving, in light of CBS' recent voyeur-fest Big Brother, that Berry is still very much the pioneer. Kinda' makes "My Ding-A-Ling" work on two different levels................ Keep on pickin' and peepin' Chuck! Spaw

Subject: RE: Happy 75th Chuck Berry From: GUEST Date: 18 Oct 01 - 03:15 PM Not too many musicians can be credited with giving birth to a rock 'n' roll cliche, to wit: the intro to Johnny B. Goode .... If the aliens ever decipher the heiroglyphic instructions on Voyager, play the Chuck Berry record and learn to do the Duckwalk, we will have the beginnings of universal understanding through music.... |
Subject: RE: Happy 75th Chuck Berry From: GUEST Date: 18 Oct 01 - 03:31 PM Who? Oh, the guy who invented rock & roll. Before Elvis! Before practically everybody. Responsible for THE major national artform of my lifetime and a worldwide industry that generates more cash than the GNP of most nations. The main reason race, color, nationality or whatever silliness people were using to point out distinctions among us, never penetrated that culture. The main reason radio flourished despite TV. Oh, there were idiots on the fringe smashing records and being loud and McCarthylike before cameras, but nobody paid much attention, we were all busy having fun with Mr. Berry's tunes. That Buddy Holly and Little Richard could practice their art on a socially level field is due to Mr. Berry. I, like most, grew up in a world where, within my universe, all folks looked, spoke and acted amazingly alike. A society deathly afraid that an African American family might, heaven forbid, move into the neighborhood. Yet, on the radio you could hear a sequence songs that might include the Everlys, Berry, Holly, Richard and Presley not one eyebrow raised. Nobody cared what the Monotones or Del-Vikings looked like Nobody steered us toward multicultural - it just was. And Berry's workproduct was the Genesis. Could be a stretch to suppose that a reason Dr. King believed we could all live together someday when insignificant vestiges of the aforementioned ignorance would finally be overcome, but the impact of R&R and the merging cultures of the Apollo Theater and Dick Clark could not have escapes his notice. If there's ever a Mt. Rushmore for contributers to the national culture, his face had better be up there. Says me, Bob P

Subject: RE: Happy 75th Chuck Berry From: ddw Date: 18 Oct 01 - 09:13 PM Went to a concert in Detroit a few months ago to see two of my all-time musical heroes — Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry. I almost cried for JLL —— he was bloated, pasty looking, he forgot lyrics, lost rhythms ... he was almost embarrassing to watch. Then came the great CB and the world returned to being a place I wanted to be. He had a little equipment trouble at first, then put on a great show of R&R and blues. Memorable moment. Cheers, Chuck —— many more. david |

Subject: RE: Happy 75th Chuck Berry From: GUEST Date: 19 Oct 01 - 08:00 AM ...and those old tunes still smoke the speakers after all these years. Chuck was singing about cars and sock hops and people thought he was the devil. Fast forward to today when metal bands sing about the devil.... What a contrast. |
Subject: RE: Happy 75th Chuck Berry From: GUEST,Mudcat Inner Clique Date: 19 Oct 01 - 08:58 AM May we remind you that Mudcat is for discussion of folk and blues. Rock and roll is not to be discussed. May we further point out that Mr. Berry has devoted his entire career to singinging songs of his own composition. Therefore, he is nithing but a singer-songwriter. Singer-songwriters are not to be discussed in this forum. Furthermore, what kind of 75 year old concerns himself with singing teenaged love songs. Obviously, he is a peadophile. You people should be ashmaed of glorifying such a sickie. We're going to have Susan report you to Jesus. Mudcat Inner Clique |
