Subject: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: Rick Fielding Date: 27 Oct 01 - 08:49 PM I've never been to one, although Heather remembers being a part of the "Rocky Horror Show" crowd who used to go "costumed" (and well-doped!!) to movie theatre showings. Currently the "Costume Queen" in my life is beloved sister-in law and Glaswegian Cop/Mudcatter "McKnees". Somehow it's hard for me to conceive the lengths she and her buds go to for some of these things. I believe she has been: The Tardis (from Dr. Who) A Star Trek Robot (she's a Trekker) A Wizard (from Harry Potter) A Mummy (even heard she took this act on the road...or at least on TO the road!) A Trekkie-tubbie (I can't even IMAGINE what that was all about) The Vicar of Dibley ......and I'm still chuckling at the latest disguise (and the work that went into it) Apparently this was a "Sound of Music" bash, and she really outdid herself (including the kind of obscure jokes that Mudcatters will know are so dear to my heart) I'll let her describe it if she's in the "cyber/hood". I've gone to ONE costume party, where I dressed as a folksinger (my normal sloppy attire) Any other "costume devotees"? By the way, Micca's getup at the Getaway was TERRIBLY effective! Rick |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: CarolC Date: 27 Oct 01 - 09:22 PM You know, I'm beginning to think you envy Micca's panache, Rick. (That's what they're calling it these days, right?) I started a thread called "Al and Amy's yard sale" earlier today. It's got a kilt with all of the trimmings for sale (including a sporran). Now's your chance Rick. Better jump on it while you can. |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: GUEST Date: 27 Oct 01 - 10:32 PM Yeah Rick, aim for the sporran lol |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: Rick Fielding Date: 28 Oct 01 - 12:01 AM Jeez Carol, I wasn't in the Mudcat cabin, so I still haven't even SEEN his Panache....sounds pretty impressive though. The big black cape along with the kilt was a hell of a good touch though, sort of like Rob Roy meets Dracula! Rick |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: Marion Date: 28 Oct 01 - 12:50 AM If you want a music-related costume, a fairly low-effort one would be to be a Blues Brother. You just need a suit, hat, sunglasses, half a pack of cigarettes, and your name written on your knuckles. When people ask who you are, you say, "I'm on a mission from God." One of these years I'll do that... This year I'm going as an artist (concept directly ripped off from my niece); last year I was Anne of Hell (Anne of Green Gables look with devil horns). Marion

Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: GUEST,McKnees Date: 28 Oct 01 - 02:56 AM Hi my friend and I thought long and hard and finally decided to go the Sound of Music party as the Hills, complete with snow caps and clouds, small people climbing, paths to follow and Edelweiss, Anne went the extra mile and had a helicopter. Others at the party included, men drinking beer with the foam afloat, Maria in her night dress with all her favourite things, cat, dog bee and raindrops painted on her forehead. Had a great time, and an extra hour free. Cant decide what to put on to scare the children when they come to the door, wait perhaps I don't need to put anything on!!! |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: Gervase Date: 28 Oct 01 - 07:18 AM I'm a sucker for fancy dress parties, and themes are always fun. One Christmas I threw one where everyone had to come as a character from a carol. There were plenty of shepherds and wise men, but we also had a donkey and Wenceslas's page - in a tabard made from a blow-up of the front page of the Sun! If I remember rightly the donkey - a rather plummy antiques dealer - hit the hot punch like there was no tomorrow and insisted on giving the Virgin Mary a ride around the house braying loudly, chased by assorted angels and saints singing vry off-key. |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 28 Oct 01 - 07:43 AM Gervase, what are you doing at New Year??? Why do I never get invited to parties like that...... LTS |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: Rick Fielding Date: 28 Oct 01 - 09:44 AM Constable McKnees....Just wear your Sound of Music costume! They may not be scared, but they'll sure remember it! Rick |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: Fibula Mattock Date: 28 Oct 01 - 12:01 PM I love fancy-dress parties! My friend went to a "G" party (it was someone called "Geoff"'s birthday, so they all had to dress as something beginning with G). She went as a goldfish, with an orange t-shirt, skirt and tights, a tail and fins made out of orange ballerina-skirt-netting with sequins sewn on, gold glitter make-up, ping-pong ball eyes, and the requisite container of bubbles to blow around all night. It was fantastic. This Hallowe'en we're having a Vampire dinner party - the look is black-tie/evening dress with lots of dark make-up. I spent all day yesterday scouring the shops for a corset, but I refuse to pay 40 quid for one, so the evening dress will have to do. |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: Metchosin Date: 28 Oct 01 - 12:46 PM As mentioned on another thread, in keeping with the Planter's Peanut Man, many years ago, I went as the Ramses' Condom Lady, dressed in a large Ramses condom box (words in both French and English), complete with white tights, a silver wig and surgical gloves and handed out free samples of condoms to those I thought who might be in need. |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: lady penelope Date: 28 Oct 01 - 01:50 PM The least said about Micca's panache the better, you'll only encourage him ( and him under the doctor for it and all........). Mind you, if you think he looks good in a skirt, apparently he's stunning in a basque and fishnets ( that was a self description mind you! ). And Liz? If you can get a brat wrangler, I'll take you Sue's (non-catter) next do! Where the phrase "less is more" really does apply!!! TTFN M'Lady P. |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: John in Brisbane Date: 28 Oct 01 - 08:48 PM My wife and I invariably haVe theme nights for parties and sometimes for dinner parties. Step 1 - Select the music with due regard to an easily accessible music collection. Italian, Spanish, 50's, Beach Party, Music Hall, Robih Hood, Gregorian Chants, Military Brass, School Days, Middle Eastern ... Step 2 - Find enough recorded music for the first 90 to 120 minutes, (say) 2 CD's. After that it doesn't matter. Step 3 - Select a few songs to sing and (usually) print the lyrics to songs that people only half know. e.g. O Sole Mio, Unchained Melody, Havah Nagilah, While Strollong Through The Park, 'Goodbye' from Student Prince ... Step 4 - Plan the menu and setting. This may mean throwing away the cutlery, sitting on cushions, eating in the pool, turning the heating up to high, making certain the place reeks of incense/suntan oil/herbs ... Step 5 - Advise your guests of the theme. Encourage innovation, even if some people choose to make simple concessions to the theme. Regards, John |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 29 Oct 01 - 02:15 AM Er, thanks Lady P - I've heard of what goes on at those parties and I don't quite think I'm ready for the rubber French Maid suit just yet... Though I daresay if you describe them here, you'll get takers! LTS |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: Gervase Date: 29 Oct 01 - 04:52 AM Funny you should mention that, Liz; I was thinking of resurrecting the idea nearer Christmas. I'll keep you posted...(and don't forget lots of talcum powder if you're bringing the rubber French maid outfit. (Though where that fits into a musical theme is a tricky one - maybe Eight French maids a-squeaking...!) |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: Rick Fielding Date: 29 Oct 01 - 11:50 AM Hmmmmm, a "Rubber French Maid" eh? Think I saw one of those advertised in the back of Girlie mag! Believe that Catspaw took one to a dance a few years ago. She deflated however. Rick |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: Hollowfox Date: 29 Oct 01 - 12:43 PM Fibula, I take it that the mane course will be steak? |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: Fibula Mattock Date: 29 Oct 01 - 12:51 PM Ha! the majority of attendees are vegetarian - mightily disappointing. I will happily consume a lot of red wine "blood" though. |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: SharonA Date: 29 Oct 01 - 02:30 PM On another thread describing a "Sound of Music" singalong movie screening, one guy was described as arriving in a yellow bodysuit, yellow hood and yellow-painted face. When asked who he was supposed to be, he replied, "Ray, a drop of golden sun." |
Subject: RE: Music-Theme Costume Parties, good grief! From: lady penelope Date: 29 Oct 01 - 02:58 PM Wot? not "Ray - A bloke who buys me beer" ? TTFN M'Lady P. |
