The recent refresh of "Don't Jump Off the Roof Dad" got me to thinking about a similar song called "Dad Threw The TV Out the Window". I searched and found that it is by Bill Harley, and has been recorded by him and also by Kathy Fink and Marcy Marxer.

It's a great song.
Does anyone have the lyrics and chords for it?

JAB

I have inside info that there's a new Homespun video in the works of Fink & Marxer stuff including that song...

Well, that's the wrong inside information I'm afraid, DD. The song will be in the upcoming book by Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer called "Changing Channels," songs from the CD of that title on the Rounder Kids label. The book's being issued by Red Leaf Press of St. Paul, Minn.

Fairly close I would think but if I said so I'd be guessing. The CD is available for the words. Chords:

Whoops, sorry, I was making assumptions and jumping to the wrong conclusion. Plenty of other Marxer & Fink stuff at Homespun, tho.

There's a generous sound clip of the song here. Is there anybody who can post the entire lyrics?

I don't know this song, but certainly if UK TV programming is anything to judge by, Dad did the right thing. Right on Dad, git yo'self a banjo instead.

DAD THREW THE TV OUT THE WINDOW

Dad threw the TV out the window, the window.
I think I finally cracked
Dad threw the TV out the window
And I think he hopes it will never come back.
While, life without the TV wasn't what I feared
I really didn't miss it though
Some friends thought I was weird
I didn't miss commercials and all the blood and guts
And all the stupid shows my brother watched but made me nuts.
Then one sunny Saturday my Dad could not be found
I looked high and low and from his room I heard a sound
I walked into his room to see what it could be
I found my father hiding there watching a TV.

" found my father hiding there watching a TV."

What's wrong with that? Probably there was a certain show that he liked.

I don't have a TV and almost never watch it. My sister has one and watches (watched) only one show, "Law and Order." Another friend only watches Star Trek re-runs.

Most of the people I know don't watch TV. Recently, when our music group played the Rondeau by Mouret (the theme song for Masterpiece Theatre), I went around asking people if Masterpiece Theatre was still on the air, and all I got were blank looks.

Last week I was getting an oil change, and an emaciated mechanic in a faded TV shirt snapped, "I hate TV! I don't even own one!" So giving up on TV is not just a yuppie thing.

The big secret is that there are only 425 people left in the world who watch TV. The entire industry is merely a gigantic welfare system designed to keep money in circulation and to keep administrative assistants from starving.

Copied from http://www.songsforteaching.com/billharley/coolinschool.htm:

DAD THREW THE TV OUT THE WINDOW
Bill Harley

It was in the morning, a sunny Saturday.
I turned on the TV and on the couch I lay.
I watched my favorite program, and another two or three,
When my dad came in the room and said these words to me:
"Son, turn off the TV now. There's lots of things to do.
Your bed's not made. The chores aren't done. The sun is shining too."
I said, "Oh, Dad, I'm busy now. I've got to watch this show."
I guess I should have listened, but how was I to know?
'Cause then he walked across the room and then he pulled the plug.
He lifted up the television and skipped across the rug.
He opened up the window, and then I screamed, "Dad, NO!"
But he gave the thing a heave and I watched the TV go.
Oh--

CHORUS:
Dad threw the TV out the window, the window. I think he's finally cracked.
Dad threw the TV out the window. I got a feeling that it isn't coming back

When I saw it go, when I heard it crash,
I knew that things at our house would soon be changing fast.
My dad looked out the window and mumbled, "My, oh, my!"
My brother looked out too and said, "I'm gonna die!"
And that night after dinner, when we went to watch the set,
All we found was nothing. I said, "How could I forget?"
My brother lay down on the floor and moaned, "What will I do?"
I said, "Why don't you move away?" He said, "The same to you!"
But then he told a joke, and I told two or three,
And the one about the elephants made Dad fall on his knees,
And my mom did her impression of a duck that couldn't fly
That would have made you wet your pants and maybe even cry,
All because-- CHORUS

Life without a television wasn't what I feared.
I didn't really miss it though some friends thought I was weird.
I didn't miss commercials and all the blood and guts
And all the stupid shows my brother watched that drove me nuts.
But then one sunny Saturday, my dad could not be found.
I looked high and low when from his room I heard a sound.
I ran into his room to see what it could be,
And I found my father hiding there watching a TV.
I said, "Oh Dad, now really! You ought to be ashamed."
He said kind of sheepishly, "I want to watch the game."
I picked up the TV and waltzed across the room.
I gave the thing a heave and waited for the boom. CHORUS
