DERROLL IN THE RAIN

The rain fell on the people but they never went away
In an open field in Cambridge
It was there I watched him play
He sung songs of his homeland
And doved the valleys that he loved
Of the mountains and the wonders
And the great sky that they hugged

Chorus
He spoke about his music and about his love of life,
About the people that surround him, his best friends and his wife
He spoke of great injustice to the places he once knew,
Ah nature how you've suffered, wherein freedom once you grew
Oh Derroll was his name, his voice as gentle as could be
He played his music all over
Singing his songs for you and me

He told to the people about to the war that had begun
You know there killing one another father brother and son
He sang of an old woman who had children 1, 2, 3
Of the heartbreak when he told her how they killed her family

Chorus
Yes I watched in the rain
From gentle voices word did sound
His wrinkled had that played his banjo
And all the people stood around

Chorus

Sung by The Furey Brothers
VAW file here (on the web for a few days only - sorry)

Enjoy!
Ezio

It was written by Finbar Furey who adored Derroll.
It's also in the Fureys songbook.

Derroll was an easy man to like, he once told me I was the ugliest bastard in the whole world, and made it sound like a compliment.

That's a lovely song because it captures the Derroll I knew in Lost Angeles.
We were buddies then and when he left with Jack, well, I missed him. Fortunately, Patrick Ferryn is able to bring him back.

To know Derroll was to love him. He was the real deal.

Derroll with the blue earring
And the Van Heflin smile
Never ever fearing
As he walked the Second Mile.

I followed him in his trench coat
And was comforted by his laugh.
And when you needed a gentle ear,
He'd give you more than half.

I lead him home from parties,
He was higher than a kite,
But everything he had to say
Would still come out all right.

Derroll was a gentleman
And passionate in life.
He held his banjo like a torch
'Gainst ingnorance and strife.

And if he were around today,
You'd hear him raise his voice
And know that War, no matter where
Is never the best choice.

We miss you Derroll, rest in peace,
The peace, you always crave,
Zen-master of the Banjo,
And your song beyond the grave.

Frank Hamilton
