"Thank you for your hell????

Look man, everybody got their own private hell and I don't need your ass hangin' out in mine!

Fuck off is simply a way of telling someone to "go to hell" or "kiss my ass"........What are talking about with the fingers and thumbs?

Look, Spaw, when someone offers to relieve you of your hell, my advice is give it to him. GUEST, simon peter, if you really want my hell...it's yours! On the instant. Thank YOU.

If you want a euphemism for "fuck off", how about "collateral damage"?

Please excuse these barbarians Simon Peter (by the way I LOVE your book, although I think the lead character should be a girl)

Everyday I try to help folks who simply don't know what to use ...a finger? Maybe. A thumb? Oh absolutely! A Fist? Well I have to tell you that you're the first to suggest a fist. I'm afraid you're going to get a lot of muffled notes using that technique though. There are always exceptions of course. Catspaw has been using TWO FISTS for years, and other than the resulting sound.....his playing is great.

Glad I could be of help.

See my finger
See my thumb
See my fist
You'd better run

Is that it?

Rick, you may be on to something about Spaw's two fist method. That could explain the large number of consonants in some of his gastronomical posts.

Simon Peter, I cannot think of any hand gesture tbat means 'fuck off' specifically. The closest is perhaps the two-fingered, palm-facing, sweeping upward gesture towards a person which denotes 'up yours'. But, then again, perhaps led a sheltered life. I am surprised that Spaw hasn't invented one.

The traditional gesture used to be the balled fist with the thumb poking out between the first and second fingers.
It used to be called "pulling a fig" or "giving the figgoe" and in the 17th century was the equivalent of the middle digit extended (or, in the UK, the 'V' sign with knuckles outwards) and was clearly a gesture meaning "Fuck off!". Hence the expression "I don't give a fig for...".

Gervase - ah well, as I understood it, the finger in balled fist - the Figoe - represents a fruit stone projecting from the anus, which the person you wish to insult is invited to extract with his mouth, How rude. Can anyone throw any light on the origins of this delightful folk custom? There is an Italian gesture of putting ones thumbnail under ones front incisors and drawing the nail forward to produce a clicking sound - this is supposed to represent cracking a louse or flea, personified by the person you are insulting. Ah, folk customs...

There's a gesture that's been widely (and rudely) used in all British-influenced parts of the world except the United States since (allegedly) the Battle of Agincourt: the so-called "V" sign, in which the gesturer makes a fist-shaking motion, but with his index and middle finger held up in a V-shape. If you ever come over to this side of the pond, you'll find this gesture is universally understood; while the American single-finger getsure will be met with puzzlement or (if recognised from US tv/films) derision ("Bloody Yanks, coming over here with their daft gestures ...").

Glad to ahve been of help!

Ah, yes - the famous "fickle finger of fate". Gervase is correct in that its statesdie meaning is usually some form of "fuck off", although there are shades of meaning largely determined by circumstances and relationships.

Well Steve, I think the single-digit gesture is well understood over here. Why, even my wife when out driving has frequent recourse to this and frequently gets the same in response. It has also the advantage of being less labour intensive than the use of two fingers.

Gervase -San Francisco ? I believe a similar, but not identical, pastime involving the use of Mars Bars was enjoyed by popular English entertainers during the 1960's. Mars also produce a frozen version nowadays and regular Mars Bars are availble deep-fried in batter in many Scottish chip-shops.

In Brazil, before the hand sign became Americanized to the single finger salute, the "figa" (balled fist with thumb protruding between index and middle fingers) was sometimes used to express the more vulgar sentiment. Its use stemmed from a symbol of fertility that became part of the Brazilian culture by way of slaves imported from Africa. Beautifully carved figas are still worn on necklaces and bracelets by many people from all walks of life. Apparently, the original significance is portrayed in this form; whereas the more vulgar meaning seems only to be transmitted by the use of the hand signal - although it is rarely used these days.

Speaking of eupemisms for "fuck", I learned something interesting a couple of days ago having nothing to do with hand signs, which as Guest points out aren't euphemisms anyway. I had always thought that the word "frig" was a euphemism for "fuck", as in saying "the friggin' car won't start" when it may not be completely appropriate to say "the fucking car is fucked". But I chanced to use it in a Scrabble game and had to prove its existence and so looked it up. Turns out it is a vulgar word in its own right, dating from the 16th century and based on a Middle English word that means "to rub".

As far as a euphemism for "fuck off" goes, the only one I can come up with is "screw you", which might be more correctly considered a replacement for "fuck you", which has a meaning very close but not identical to "fuck off".

The only hand sign I've ever used is flipping the bird: making a fist with the middle finger extended upward, with the back of the hand toward the person you are communicating with. This hand sign seems to mean both "fuck off" and "fuck you". As for the V sign thing in non-US English speaking lands, isn't that danerously close to Churchill's victory sign?

Isn't is interesting that the victory sign was used as a peace sign during the Viet Nam war? Is anyone else pissed off about Verizon Wireless using it in their ads for telephones? The forward facing V sign was one of the most respected hand signs of the 20th century, used famously in two major wars. Now they are trying to sell things with it. Sigh . . .

I should have included that in most circles, even the the use of the manual figa is more often considered to be more of a wish of good luck (not unlike showing crossed fingers) rather than an expression of the vulgar sense.

John, Churchill originally gave the victory sign the wrong way--back of the hand outward--until someone pointed out his error, and he changed to the correct palm outward version. It appeared in the occupied Channel Islands a lot (just the letter V), chalked on walls and doors; the Germans tried to make out it was and old Teuton custom and stood for verlornen [sp?] meaning "lost", but no-one was fooled.

John P: In the situation of the non-starting car, the completely inappropriate expression (as quoted in "Soldier of Fortune" a number of years ago) is: "Fuck! The fucking fucker is fucking well fucked!" ...preferably accompanied by hand gestures, such as grasping a tire iron and swinging it at a headlight.

When I was running residential courses for teenagers I once heard, coming from a dormitory, "We'll wait till they've fucked off, then we'll fuck about like fuckin' fuck..."

I'm not sure what hand gestures were being used but he must have been knackered at the end of the phrase.

I'm sure I remember reading that the word was an Anglo-Saxon truncation of 'fornication'.

And now that I've written it down for the first time, every toilet wall belongs to ME!

I think the fist referred too may be the recent "wanker" gesture of closed fingers waved up and down. Why men should wish to insult other men by calling them wankers when all men are wankers daily from the day their balls drop is beyond my comprehension.

Fuckin A! This fuckin' thread is completely fucked ain't it?

Trevor...A lot of my foster teen males used fuck at every other word mostly because their vocabulary was so bad!!!

As for "euphemisms" for "fuck" I turn to the late, great, Allen Sherman who wrote a one word chapter in his book The Rape of the A.P.E. The one word was Fuck and the rest of the chapter was the footnote with a long history and assorted euphemism he happily explained. Carnal Knowledge for instance, literally means "to know the meat." A variant we like here is "lurk off."

Another variant we like is "Eat sh*t and howl at the moon!"

Of course they aren't as sexually exciting but sometimes they are JUST RIGHT for accuracy.

tsk...in their origins (as several posts have shown), most rude gestures and verbal insults were highly specific and honed, Now it seems that many of them have been combined and interbred until the are just generic insults meaning "I don't like you and consider you to be in my way and/or not worth my time and consideration"

In my mind, "fuck off" seems to connote a sense of "Go away and don't bother me"...which is different than "fuck you"...likewise, the middle digit has a different meaning than the 1st & 4th digits, or the thumb thru the balled fist.

The same general tendency that tends to make the 'folk' category so ambiguous also works in other aspects of language & culture these days...people KNOW lots of insults, but most seem to use them with little feeling for appropriate detail and situation.(Maybe I don't get get insulted by the right class of people..*grin*)...Some of you could probably wither the flowers in my lapel with choice invective and hand gestures!)

(I commented on some of this in an earlier thread about the term "Fuckin' A"....I claim it to be a corruption of the earlier "Fuckin Aye" (meaning 'absolutely'), in which someone saw 'aye' in print and couldn't pronounce it right....(a Google search gets you both).

also in that thread was a a link to this joke I remembered, which is all too close to the truth about the overuse of 'fuck'....

I always thought the balled fist with the thumb protruding between the index finger and the middle finger was the manual alphabet symbol for the letter "T".

How exactly far can your thumb protrude between there? I have to stretch to get it past the bottom of my thumbnail.

During the Vietnam War, a US Naval Vessel, The Pueblo, was captured by North Vietnamese forces and the crew held hostage. A group picture was staged by the Viets to show the crew was in good condition, and they were told to smile and wave at the camera. One of the sailors asked if it would be ok for the crew to give the "Hawaiian Good Luck Sign", and the Viets said that was alright. The entire crew promptly presented their middle fingers to the camera. It was some time afterwards that the Vietnamese realized they had been the butt of the joke, and the crew was punished severely.

Sad but true, I debauched her (took me awhile to find her bauch, but when I did, I took that sucker). Yes, Spaw, I have in mind the look on the face of a friend who, when asked if he had slept with a particular woman replied "No, not a wink..."

The Pueblo was captured, not by the North Vietnamese, but by the North Koreans as I recall.

Would it be asking too much to keep at least the Thread names "G-Rated?" There may be those among us who believe that certain language is better reserved for such places as one would expect to encounter it.

You know, I believe you're right LH.

And I agree with Big Daddy. We had a 12 year old kid looking for Blues info on this Forum, and a thread title like this tends to be offensive. Language in posts is often pretty salty, mine as much as any, but it seems that we could use a bit more care in composing thread titles.

Leej, the problem there is that most of don't use that stuff in the titles. This one was started by one of our resident trolling guests who started about 5 last night being cute and all. We're all suckers for one's like this so it plays out and we have a good time..............We need a Joe Offer title change for this one.
