We can get much info (with ABC notation and lyrics) on "The Rowan Tree" from The Fiddler's Companion.

I know that you are at least half right Mr S. Doug! While I can just hear Phil Coulter doing a master's job in the playing of it, it is, I think a traditional Border counties tune [played a lot on the Northumbrian pipes]. I doubt, however, that the lyrics were by Burns. Not that I have any idea exactly of the origin, but I've never seen them included in any collection of Burns' work."The Rowan Tree"[ "mountain ash"--but who the hell would sing about that?!?] was, and is, a popular song throughout Borders society in Scotland.

Boab I stand corrected - you are of course correct - I posted without thinking..

It was Lady Nairn(e)- Carolina Oliphant, 1766-1845 - apparently who wrote the words - and it's a lot more like her sort of stuff.

Cheers

    D                                  G             D
Oh rowan tree, oh rowan tree, thoul't aye be dear to me.
    Bm                F#m G       D       A7   D
Entwin'd thou art wi' mony ties, o' hame and infancy.
                         G                   D                   A7
Thy leaves were aye the first o spring, thy flowr's the simmer's pride:
       D                   G       D       A7    D
There was na sic a bonnie tree, in all the country side.
   A9      D
Oh rowan tree.

How fair wert thou in simmer time,
Wi' all thy clusters white.
How rich and gay thy autumn dress,
Wi' berries red and bright.
Oh thy fair stem were mony names
Which now nae mair I see,
But there engraven on my heart,
Forgot they ne'er can be.
Oh rowan tree.

We sat aneath thy spreading shade,
The bairnies round thee ran,
They pu'd thy bonnie berries red
And necklaces they strang.
My mither oh, I see her still,
She smil'd our sports to see,
Wi' little Jeannie on her lap,
Wi' Jamie at her knee.
Oh rowan tree.

Oh, there arose my father's pray'r
In holly evening's calm,
How sweet was then my mither's voice
In the martyr's psalm;
Now a' are gan! We meet nae mair
Aneath the rowan tree,
But hallowed thoughts around tee twine
O' hame and infancy.
Oh rowan tree.
