Is there anyone here who could transpose a friend's song for symphony music. She's won the high bid (on Ebay of all things) to appear the 24th of this month with Arlo Guthrie at Carnagie Hall (Carnegie?..maybe..)and needs her song turned into music. A bunch of us on another board have enjoyed her company and songs for the last year and did a pledge drive to send her off and she's going! If anyone here could volunteer (my hat is in my hand, it would need to be a freebie) to change her song by means of a software program it would be the topping on the cake. She says it's okay with Mr. Guthrie if she does it alone, but the symphony behind her would really be nice. This is a long begging post and I apologize. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Here's a link to the song she wants to do. It was written during the floods last year.
Kitty West's song "The Mighty Mississippi".. It's NOT an MP3 site, so no worrys there...

I'm sure someone here can. Someone will surely be along in a bit, but if not, I will PM some people.

Does she have any idea how she'd like it orchestrated? I could transcribe the melody and believe I could transpose it into proper pitch for most orchestral instruments, but I'd think it'd be kind of a boring accompaniment for the whole orchestra to be playing melody behind her. I assume she'd like a little more 'zing' from the orchestra than that.

The other question is how to get printable copies to her. Does she have an email box where she could receive a number of sizable graphics files? Or does she have any software that'd print the score if it was emailed to her?

I'll have a go at getting the melody transcribed anyway. If she'd like to email me with some ideas how she'd like to do this, my email address is

Ivan Bradley's Email

Thanks Ivan!! I'll see if I can raise her, if she hasn't already seen your post. I don't know much at all about symphony orchestrations but perhaps she will have some ideas for this. Thanks very much.

Tweed, my brother is a composer with several symphonies etc. under his belt, so to speak. I don't know if he could do it, but I could ask, if things don't work out otherwise. He's got a masters in theory composition and does beautiful orchestration. It would be a thrill for him to know his arrangement would be played in Carnegie.

Thanks Mz.Kat, I'm still trying to raise the Kitty. I expect she's played somewhere last night and hasn't checked her email yet today. I doubt she'll believe her eyes when she finds these offers of help over here. She'd about resigned herself to letting the "band" go out for a cig while she did her gig solo;~)

Tweed, glad you brought it here. I hope Ivan or kat's brother can help here...The situation is a real time constraint thing.

Kitty, glad you stopped by. When I read your e-mail fro Arlo over at Tweed's Place, my stomach dropped. To get all that together on such short notice.......WOW! I'm still not sure it can happen, but you have some good folks here on it. I'd think too about asking if you can "borrow" a good fiddler, bass player, and guitarist, from Arlo or the orchestra and I'm sure within an hour you could work a little backup group that would sound just great. A note to Arlo to that effect might be worth the effort.

For all you 'Catters who aren't aware, Kitty West is going to be on stage at Carnegie Hall with Arlo in a few days. She won the e-Bay auction for the privilege, but the privilege will be for the audience and Arlo. Many of the good folks over at Tweed's contributed to her auction bid and provided an excited cheering section. That's a good group over at Tweed's much like the support for each other we often have here. I've been visiting there and so has Cletus......Matter of fact, I think Cletus has a few relatives over there.

Gosh....I was mulling all this over while taking my daughter to school a few minutes ago. No matter what the outcome of the concert itself, the effort and input of all these people is the real honor. I think I'll borrow a commercial image that some credit card company uses...

* Winning Carnegie Hall bid: $1800.00 * Plane tickets to New York: $ 350.00 * Van fixed in order to go to airport $ 75.00 * Phone bills aquired because of this: $ 100.00 * Bounced check fees (oops) $ 50.00 * Large Group of caring, enthusiastic, positive people gathered together to help manifest a dream for someone they've never met.......................PRICELESS!!!!

There's something extremely wonderful happining here.

I used to think that the way to get to Carnegie Hall was to practice--I guess that was before E-Bay--

I have laughed at that one all week too...however, I suppose that 35 years of being a performing musician could possibly count as the "practice, practice, practice" part...ya think?

If everyone who'd been playing for 35 years went to Carnegie Hall, there'd be no room for you!.

Don't think about it too much, just enjoy it--by the way, I've seen a few things in Carnegie Hall, and I've listened to your MP3- and I think just you, banging away on your guitar, and singing, will be the best show of all. Don't forget to call the folks at the "Today Show", David Letterman, et al and tell them your story--they love to feature "Carnegie Hall" acts as guests, and they love guests who have unusual stories, they might even let you play your song--might as well, you're going to be in town anyway--

Danged, K.W., Fiver's got one heck of an idea. If its okay with you, I'll work up a short press release and email it to some entertainment folks in New York. Heck, we've come this far. It would be a shame not to give it a try. It's a feel good story and these days feel good stories are in short supply... And, besides, I think they gotta pay you so maybe you could cover a few bounced checks when ya get back home (heehee).

Sure, Bobert... It would be fun to "bang away on my guitar" on a big city TV show...even more fun to tell the story of ordinary folks doing extrodinary things so unselfishly. It's an inspiring story during a time saturated with too much bad news.

Whoo! I didn't even think about the money!! Anyway, Bobert, the press release is a good idea, but call the producers directly(don't count on them returning a voicemail--they nearly never do) and do it today--sometimes, you can even get airfare and accomodations from them! Kitty, get a nice outfit--solid colors, no folkie clothes, they look too busy on camera! If you have boots, wear them(with a dress or skirt)--Katie Couric loves boots, and always comments when female guests wear them--Don't forget "Live at Five" and "Conan"

Okay, I sent emails to both the Today Show and Letterman telling the story in a manner that should pique their interests. I'll see what comes back tomorrow while I contimplate actually making any calls. I used to promote my band but that was a long time ago in another life so I'm just not feeling like I could benefit Kitty with my lackluster telemarketing skills. BUT if there's anyone reading this who has some experience and know how, then GO FOR IT! And, gee, it just occured to me that we Tweedfolk have just crashed into your shack and all we've done is beg for your help... Well, ol' bobert just wants to say a big THANK YOU and hopefully we'll we will put a few peas in the pot in the future. Thanks.

Well, as a TweedieNewbie, I for one would like to know this vital information! And I'll trade you for the true tale of how the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed came into existence. It's first mentioned in a Mudcat classic thread, which was later refreshed so that post number 300,000 could happen on such a high class thread! So if you want the inside dope (and I know I do on Bobert), CLICK HERE for the infamous Tiple (Tipple) thread. Enjoy.

Ahh, Spawz, now that was one interestin thread, but now that I've learned that C.F.Martin had any thing to do with making that bastardized instrument I'll be lookin at my 1964 D-18 a little differently, as in...ahh... You related to that f**kin thing?... It's kinda like hookin up with the woman of your dreams then meeting her mother and remembering someone telling you that they all end up lookin like their mothers and you're lookin at mom thinkin that this if a freight train were to get a look at mom, it would jump tracks and take a dirt road... But, yeah. We mighta had a major food fight down in Tweedsburg one night. That is dependin just who you ask. Seems that there was a skirmish over a certain musician, who will remain nameless, who might have been in the Yardbirds and Cream (wink, wink) in Tweedsburg before I tunneled in there. Well, I'm not too sure, Spawz, what was said and who said it but I was warned when I got there that, no matter what I talked about, I should stay clear of mentioning this Blind Faith guy so I did...well, kindof. But one night the devil... yes, the devil... broke in my house and got on my puter and... well, he went right on down to Tweeds Square wearin my hat and coat and since it was dark everyone thought the devil was me and so the devil yelled "Eri* Clapt*n" three times real loud and then ran off into the darkness. Well, that started the "Rumble in the Tweedsburg Jungle". When the sun came up the next morning the Tweedsburg Shack was completely covered with grafetti, the coolers and folding chairs strewn in and around the shack and my poor ol' butt duct taped to the bench in Tweedsburg Square. I think that's what happened but if you asked each Tweedster you'd probably get as many versions as Tweedsters. All I know, is that whatever happened, I'z still get duct taped to just about any nasty thing they find around Tweedsburg, like Beachie's high tech potty lounge chair. So, Spawz, thats that's my story and I'z stickin to it. What else can I do? They got me duct taped to the story, too. Oh, depot agent, please....cut this danged tape.....

Dang it, Bobert, don't put our Tweed family quarrels in the street. And Aren't We Raisin' Y'all Right? 'splainin' how the Three Kings of Xmas are Albert, Freddie, and B.B.? And how T-Bone and Muddy are God? Next time it's the duct tape AND the Nyquil. You gotta choice in life. Black or silver, Original Green or New Wild Cherry.

Rolfyboy6, I double-checked it and it seems to work fine. You may have just run into a server problem, as the Mudcat's extra servers seem to be down, at the moment.

try it when you are in http://ragtime.mudcat.org

it should have come up under that anyway, the way I did the link, but it's always worth another try.

Oh, and around here we sometimes call them "blue clickie things" and if you go to the Quick Links' pull down menu, click on Aine's Congbook, you will find a song about them by one of our very own.:-)

Cheers,

kat
