I will provide florid descriptions of the facilities on Wednesday. I know that the cooker is merely domestic, so if anybody was thinking of doing a hog roast you may need to think again ;-)

Why? Didn't we decide to do the roast over our indoor camp fire?

Thanks for all your preparation work - I am looking forward to February!

The hog roast will be outdoors near the inflatable moat, so the skinnydippers can warm themselves, no? Any spare melodeons to fuel the fire? Liz?

On a serious note, can anybody who is considering clog dancing please attend the special venue I have arranged, which is in Bideford. Or alternatively please bring boards as the floor is apparently waxed ;-)

Bideford sounds nice! It has a cracking folk club at the Joiners Arms behind the Panier Market. Is that where you've fixed it for?
I will be going on their weekend away to Boscastle YH in March. But I'm not so good at the clogging, so perhaps I'll give it a miss in early February!

Kind friends and companions come join me in rhyme ...

I can't persuade the Shakespeare Morris Men that Clementine does not fit Cwm Rhondda but does fit perfectly to Austria (Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken/Deutschland Über Alles). The beginnings of both tunes are too similar, and they always go off into the wrong one! Bastards.

I have *ahem* 'inspected the facilities' at York House, havign only ever been in the downstairs. Mr. Adams kindly gave me a guided tour and discussed options.

What he proposes is to sign the whole building, all 3 floors of neo-classical glory (albeit substantially 'modernised' in the 1960s) to us for the weekend, with areas being openable on request. Facilities available which I wasn't aware of include a certain amount of computer use (for posting bulletins for non-attenders, and resolving lyric disputes) and a snooker table, for god's sake.

As I mentioned somewhere else, there is a soundproof room for music after the PEL stops, with a loft above which could be suitable as a quiet sleeping area. The main room, on the ground floor, is very large, there are various bits of squashy furniture which we can arrange to make it a comfortable loungy sort of place should we wish.

Cost is being discussed even as we speak, I'll post more when I get details. Now, any questions?

Noreen,

Re: "Steve Parkes has offered to serenade me with lullabyes

The Mudcat silence from Steve today/tomorrow is due to the fact that he's trying to move house at the moment. Everything was all packed and loaded yesterday, but the money from the buyer was apparently stuck somewhere, and so completion got delayed a day. Finger's crossed Steve will be back online tomorrow!

Don't do it Dai .... don't drink from Micca's hip flask ... unless you're feeling very brave ... you never know what he's got in it .... admittedly it's always very interesting.. it's just that sometimes when you try to stand up you discover your legs no longer work and you think you must have woken up with someone else's head cos the one you woke up with doesn't seem to fit!

Meanwhile Micca, when are you going to come visit us again? Paul has an 18 year old and a 21 year old I'm sure you'd like to be introduced to, strathisla and craggenmore. Jude

Is Stony Stratford really ready for this?

I am torn between my usual B&B cop-out and savouring the aforementioned facilities. But ..... I take up a lot of room and I snore and I have age-related requirements that involve frequent nocturnal forays. My night sight is dreadful and I trip over things. Perhaps I should just stay at home and join in on PalTalk!

Perhaps I could sleep on the snooker table.

As to the snooker table, do we have to supply our own balls?
And I'm not playing with god again, I'm sure he cheated last time when he had a break of 148!
The triangle might come in usefull for Cajun music, though.
On second thoughts, perhaps we should call it the *pool room*, that would keep the skinny dippers out of sight!!!

Dead Horse, I don't know about you but I will bring my own balls - though I'd never use them for playing snooker, it would be too painfull ;-)

Apropos painful: calling it the pool room might lead to serious injuries for the skinny dippers...

Lanfranc, just sleep at the terminal point of your nightly forays - then you do not even have to get up to do what you have to do at that time of night. Snoring there would also be no problem...

Hey folks--I'm back!!

Noreen, I'll be happy to serenade you with lullabies, if I can get the usual writen permission in triplicate from Mrs Parkes. (Talking of oysters, Sue & I had a dozen on the night we were wed. Only four of them worked.) The move went OK ... eventually. I nearly was buried under a pile of 78s! (But more Layton & Johnson and Peter Dawson than Paul Robeson.) Got up this morning in my new house (yes, it was me wandering around starkers putting lights on at random, forgetting there weren't any curtains up) and found the mice had gnawed holes in the membrane of my kazoo; I think there's a Christams carol lurking in there somewhere!

The central heating is very easy, just follow these instructions.1.Use a knife to split the foil. 2. Grasp it firmly by the neck, and, holding the top in the other hand 3.Twist and pull until after a slight squeak followed by a popping sound, the odour of peat will fill your nostrils. 4.Obtain one small glass, half fill it and give it to your partner. 5. Insert the neck of said object in your mouth, and inhale deeply. After awhile you won't feel the cold, or anything else.*BAG*... Big alchoholic grin. Hope the new home is filled with joy.

No more, please.
And while we're on the subject, the second thing she looks for on entering a room full of folkies (the first is food!!!) are banjo players and wooden floors. So watch out.

Please note that Phoebe is also Manitas' child too.. She gets the stubborn, noisy streak from him, as does she the penchant for waving her legs in the air sans underwear, staying up til all hours (gone midnight and she still isn't in bed....), and the bottom noises. The liking for sprouts and the ability to curl her tongue, she gets from me.

When you blame Manitas for the alleged inherited behaviour of Phoebe. I assume that the reason for your certainty in this regard, arises from the fact that you yourself have NEVER EVER done any of the things that you accuse her of? We need to know these things, the future of genetic inheritance may depend on your answer.
Happy new year.....Jock

I distinctly remember incidences of flatulence in your vicinity....accompanied by musical belching on more than one occasion....I will, however, verify that I have NEVER seen you lie on your back and wave your legs in the air, with or without underpinnings.

The lying on her back and waving her legs in the air I have witnessed. But as she always wears trousers or shorts I can't tell whether or not she has ever done it "commando".

Dead Horse, you have clearly been in contact with the LFU's ( little fat uncle or Micca as he is also known)hip flask. My only advice for the future is don't, on account of that 'lighting up of eyes and Cor, that hit the spot' is far more likely to be 'a crossing of the eyes and a Cor, my heart has stopped.'

Just a suggestion for the Gathering:- in view of Max's appeal for funds for the Mudcat Mudcat Trouble would those attending the Gathering be willing to contribute a small amount towards keeping this site going? We'll then have to work out some way of getting the money to Max - but Gareth has apparently got some ideas about this.

Also seeing that this thread has been revived Mudcat Crafters could I suggest that anyone who has any craftwork for sale bring it to Stony and donate some of the proceeds to Mudcat.
Actually, it need not be just craftwork: old LP's, CD's, books, 21 year-old malts, kittens, sheep, inflatable objects etc, could all be put up for sale or auction.

Meanwhile Max needs cash NOW. I've just managed to open a PayPal account (before I read katlaughing's warning), so I think (and hope and pray!) that that will work. So, lets get going and start looking under the sofa for those odd bits of small change!

My son lives and works in the US, and because he has no credit rating there he is forced to use his UK credit cards. To pay the bills he has to change his dollars into Sterling. I don't know what you peeps think, but I wonder if there is a way that we might pay sterling into his bank here, and he gives dollars to Mudcat/Max in the US. I don't even know if he would be interested, never mind whether it would seem like a feasible idea to you UK Muddies. It's just a thought, what do you think?

Also tried something called bacardi 151 ..... definitely something to treat with extreem caution .. it has very warming properties similar to certain things that have been known to come from Micca's infamous hip flask. Be aware! I am now sure I will come!

I just bought the plane tickets.

Liz, I will arrive at Heathrow on 7. Feb (Thursday) at 12:35 UTC, and will depart from Heathrow on 11. Feb (Monday) at 20:00 UTC.

My early arrival is due to my bad experience with flying early on friday morning...

If I may do so, I'd like to stay at your place for the nights, Liz. When exactly I will arrive at your place will be decided later - I might have a look at London first or go out again after putting down my bags or ...

AlanWW, Snuffy: do you want me to smuggle some more snuff stuff or was the stuff I brought to Llanstock too bad?

And one more request: a friend of mine tries to collect all 96 different Euro/Cent coins (8 values, 12 nations). He already has all German and all Austrian coins. If anyone coming to Stony Stratford from any other Euro countries could bring a set of coins. Of course you will get the same value back.

Just reading Max's thank you thread, and it occurred to me that the Stony Stratford skinny dipping, moat digging, hip flask tasting, kazoo blowing, and sleep deprivation fest, needs something more.(SSSDMDHFTKB&SD) I suggest that we can all donate items to be raffled in aid of our favourite web-site, and I'll kick it of by donating 2 bottles of malt whisky. Come on folks, think of all those unwanted crimbo prezzies, dig them out and come on down to the SSG.

How big is the inflatable moat? If the space is tight for caravan parking I could always bring my 17 foot cabin cruiser, but I would need an inflatable slipway. Mind you from the aforesaid tales of flatulence in the indoor camping section there should be no shortage of inflation facilities - perhaps the Irish & Northumbrian pipers could assist.

Seriously though, does anyone know if there is going to be enough room for all the caravans etc. - I'm planning to try and get there for mid afternoon just in case, Linda (Smith) will come up by train in the evening.

One way of raising money would be to impose silly penalties like Buntingford Folk Weekend used to do - 50p for singing with a finger in your ear - £1 if it sticks out the other ear as well - 20p per death - special rates for battles etc.

Finally Linda's threatening to bring her (now amplified) autoharp - Im thinking about cutting another soundhole in the back so that it's useful for slicing boiled eggs - any other suggestions?

Further events in hte diary: Friday 8th Feb, 'The Song loft' in Stony present Bill Jones, a lovely lass from Northants who does some nice tunes and stuff.

Saturday 9th, afternoon - The Crown public house would like some tunes and songs while we sample their fine mystery guest beers. Ken at the Fox and Hounds may sell you lunch. Saturday 9th, Robin Chandler and the Howling Tomcats at the Fox and Hounds for those of a blues disposition.

Sunday 10th, 12 noon-3 pm, Open Session in the Vaults Bar, which is apparently 'World Famous', although I don't believe it. Apparently large Scottish gentlemen are required to attend ;-)

I have my kids that weekend, so any assistance in being a responsible adult and preventing fights with the fire extinguishers will be gratefully accepted.

Having second thoughts about campervan, it's too large and environmentally unfriendly as it gobbles juice. So me and missus will indoor camp, despite severe misgivings re-the company. So bang goes the inflateable moat. Also add two loud snorers to list of ne'er-do-wells. Will bring polypin of Flagship ale to gathering, perhaps we could all chuck in a pound a pint to add to raffle proceeds? Thats thirty-four and a half quid if you drink the sludge at the bottom.

and preventing fights with the fire extinguishers

Ok, give me a fire extinguisher and I will use it (or its contents) to prevent fights! I prefer powder or foam extinguishers for that purpose, CO2-extinguishers make the room go cold...

And keep enough fire extinguishers at hand, these things don't work for very long, so if I have to prevent more than just a few fights...
