Beautiful old song: I've got Bridie Gallagher singing it. Will transcibe the lyrics later, if no one else gets there first. (Malinmore is on the western coast of Donegal).

THE ROAD TO MALINMORE

On the road to Malinmore you can hear the ocean roar,
I heard the skylarks sing their happy song,
It was in the month of June and the heather was in bloom,
I met a "cailin" as she walked along. [colleen - girl]
Her face was fair and handsome and her hair was neatly tied,
In golden coloured ribbons that she wore,
For she stole my heart away on that grand new summer's day,
And I met her on the road to Malinmore

CHORUS: On the road to Malinmore you can hear the ocean roar,
And I met her on the road to Malinmore.

Sure I've travelled Donegal through her glens and mountains tall,
And many there's a cailin I have seen,
But there's none that can compare with the cailin I met there,
And I knew in all the world she was a queen.
So I went to see her parents to ask them for her hand,
And if I could make her mine for evermore,
So if you're in Donegal you'll be welcome if you call,
To that cottage on the road to Malinmore. CHORUS

Transcribed from the Bridie Gallagher album "Greatest Hits Vol One", Sharpe Music, 3 Irish Street, Dungannon, Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

Malinmore is on the western coast of Co Donegal, a couple of miles southwest of Glencolumbkille. The name is Irish, "malainn mhor", meaning "large brow [of a hill] or brae". The melody is very beautiful, sorry I don't have the means to post it.

I was wondering if anyone would have the Irish (Gaelic) translation of the lyrics for 'The Road to Malinmore'. There is an Irish version which was sung by the late Dermot o'Brien.

Ar an gcladach chuala glor,
is me ag triall ar Mhalainn Mhoir,

.....
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I memorised it from the record years ago, but i do not know how accurate my Gaelic spelling is. This is the first verse and the refrain:

Ar an gcladach chuala an glór,
is mé ag triall ar Mhálainn Mhóir,
mórtas fairrige ar cur gliondar ar mo chroí
Bhí an ghaoth aniar-aneas
Nuair a dhearc mé an cailín deas,
Bhí sí ag gluaiseacht tríd an aiteann mar bhanríon
O, do chaith sí ribín ina gruaig
A bhí dualach, casta, rua,
Bhí sí álainn, banúil, néata, mar ba chor
Is do gheit mo chroí gan ghó
Lá breá aoibhinn ann fadó
Cois na mara dhom a triall ar Mhálainn Mhóir.

Curfa:
Is tú mo shearc,
Is tú mo ghluis
Is ceol do ghutha i mo chluis
Cois na mara dhom a triall ar Mhálainn Mhóir.

There are videos of this on YouTube. Here's a good one for learning the tune:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDf4JdUI0pw

It's in the key of G and 4/4 time. The usual chords for G (G,D,C) seem to work. It wouldn't surprise me if an Am or Em comes up somewhere late in the song for variety.

Pick up your ax and give it a try.
