We've used this thread for years to check in with JOhn from Hull, a Mudcat legend. So, don't go thinking it's one of those religion debate threads.
Cheers, JOhn.

Like all good Traddies we celebrate it on the 6th day of January as is only right, proper and traditional...

Then Joseph took Mary
All on his right knee;
Pray tell me, little baby,
When your birthday shall be.

On the sixth day of January
My birthday shall be,
When the stars and the elements
Shall tremble with fear.

It's Jesus's birthday? Happy Birthday Jesus!

His mum and dad didn't fall into the usual tradition of calling him Noël I notice.

I wonder if only having one lot of presents a year influenced his take on life in later years?

Don't know when he was born or even if he really lived, but the teachings attributed to Jesus are what I like, especially the Sermon on the Mount. That's reason enough for me to celebrate Christmas.

i understand critics used to say luke was unreliable as quirinias was governer at a different time to lukes account but it was later discovered he had position twice so bible account was not wrong.

and ceasar thought he was just ordering one of his periodic census,s and all the time it was to get Jesus born in bethlehem!

thank God;the word became flesh and dwelt among us.

.. I can certainly feel sympathy for that bloke Jesus.
Knowing just what it's like having a birthday so close to xmas
skinflint relatives and friends think they can get away with saving money
by combining birthday and xmas presents & parties..

Hey, any time is a good time for a celebration. Winter is particularly good, because the weather is crummy and it's nice to have songs and food and lights and traditions to brighten things up. It's a time for warm hearts and good cheer, not for proving oneself right and somebody else wrong. If you're not from the Christian tradition, celebrate older traditions - or celebrate ALL traditions.
We celebrate Christmas in the Polish tradition, since my wife and mother-in-law are of pure Polish heritage. I'm not Polish, but the food is great and the carols are pretty, so I have a great time.
Mudcat tradition is that the primary purpose of this thread is to extend greetings to a Mudcat legend, Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull. Merry Christmas, John!

Probably August as it would be some what ridiculous to do a census and tax at winter's start. Augustus would have hit them when they had more cash on hand, after the first harvests. Yes the RCC's propensity to incorporate and co-opt elements from other religions, they would logically not want to overthrow one of the most beloved holidays of the pagan world. Around solstice would work.

re two births: Wasn't it Jesus who said "Ye must be born again."?!!

Fallacy #1 is that the mythological and historical Jesus was born on December 25th, not true and substantiated.

However, Mythras the Persian sun-god was born of virgin birth on December 25th.

If there was a Jesus based on historical claims, he would have been born sometime in April.

framus... hahahahaaa... good one.

"A majority of 59 per cent says the most important thing about Christmas is that it's "a time for family," while only two in 10 said the most important thing is reflecting on the birth of Jesus Christ."

Same thing, really, to any true, thinking Christian.

Over here, it's considered a bit non-u to keep reminding people of their birthday after a certain age.

Thank you Saint John of Hull. I am sitting here looking out at Hull Mountain in northern California at the moment, all covered with snow, about 30 miles to the north of my location. Good thoughts and seasons greeting to you. Exigesis and critical interpretation aside, thanks for the verses and the spirit in which given. Another way to sum it up is that it is the gift giving season. God has given us a great gift, ours to accept; a clean slate for all time and eternity. Receive Him today and a Merry Christmas to you all.

The date is off, but my Ukrainian-heritage Orthodox friend shared this:

Christmas greeting - the greeter says: "KHRISTOS RAZDYETSJA" (which means "Christ is born!") and the "greetee" responds with: "SLAVITE JEHO" ("Glorify Him").

Poem 230 of 230: AS GOSPELLERS HAVE SAID/CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY

(TUNE:

D A B A G E
E E D G F# G
D A B A G E
D A B A G E
E E D G F# G
D A B A G E
E E D G F# G

D A B A G E
E D G F# G
D A B A G E
E D G F# G)

As gospellers have said,
Beneath signalling skies,
On land dusty to tread,
A trough in a stable
Was the strawy first-bed
Of a divine baby -
The forgiving Godhead.

A season for new hope -
There then, and here now;
The yuletide of goodwill -
There then, and here now.

In respect of this chance,
Beneath bright or dark skies,
Faith's the star that we glance
Attending Christ's churches
And trying to enhance,
With singing and ritual,
Our God-loving stance.

A...

This is on myspace , if you'd like to hear it.

The problem is that people keep wanting to take the mess out of Christmess.

Mithras, the Persian sun god was according to the Romans born on 12/25.
Christians just appropriated that day for a birthday from the Roman festival of
Brumaire.

Best wishes from the fly infested bog country of Kent County, New Brunswick.

Well, not right now. No flies. It was -23 yesterday. And, the hurricane force winds woulda blown the flies clear off ya. Of course, after the snow stops, we are to get ice pellets and then freezing rain followed by rain, which is gonna make an awful mess on top of all the snow you threw on us lately, you, you blessed holy.... guy. But, it's your day, eh?

PS.... What is it with you and the flies in July? I mean, Jesus Christ!
