Subject: Liam Clancy laid bare? From: GUEST,beachcomber Date: 28 Dec 01 - 04:06 PM Whilst attempting to avoid the post Xmas sales to-day I met Liam in a small corner shop, doing likewise. His great news, for me at any rate, was, that his Autobiography is soon to hit the bookshops. He said that the cover and some notes are on his web site already, anyone seen it ? Sorry, I can't do the "blue Clicky Thing" (ask Bernard ? again?). It promises to be quite a read as Liam has had an amazing career since leaving Carrick-on-Suir, in Tipperary some time back in the 50's. Just thought that I'd mention it for those "Catters" who are interested. Happy New Year to the lot of yez. Beach |

Subject: RE: BS: Liam Clancy laid bare? From: GUEST,Oul'mole Date: 06 Jan 02 - 10:26 PM If, while anxiously awaiting the revelations in his book "The Mountain of the Women", ye'd care to see Liam Clancy's shiny *head* laid bare (which I believe it *never* is in public performance, but correct me if I'm wrong & reprove me for being catty ['Catty???] if you like) -- as he receives his honorary **Doctorate of Letters** from the University of Limerick -- go to http://www.liamclancy.com/doc1.htm on his website. There are also a couple of other pix from the ceremony, including one with his former colleague Dr. Tommy Makem who received the same well-deserved recognition. Come a long way since they last shook hands. If this is all old news, or non-news, to Mudcat regulars, please forgive this inexpert but well-meaning Guest. Annyway, good thing reports of Liam's death were greatly exaggerated back in March of '00: he'd have missed his appointment in the Groves of Academe. ("Back where I come from we have universities, seats of great learning -- where men go to become great thinkers. And when they come out, they think deep thoughts -- and with no more brains than you have. But: They have one thing you haven't got! A diploma!" --the Wizard of Oz) Thanks, folkie-folks. You have a damn fine Forum here.

Subject: RE: Liam Clancy laid bare? From: GUEST,CARRICK-ON-SUIR PERSON Date: 10 Aug 07 - 11:57 AM The mountain of women is a real place. The Mountain of Women: there are two sources for the name. The view of the mountain resembles a reclining lady of mountainous proportions. It also alludes to the legend of Fionn MacCool's task set for the ladies of Ireland to select a wife. He had a race to the top of the mountain and there were a lot of participants. It was fixed, of course, by the 'little people' so that the right girl won. naturally.

Subject: RE: Liam Clancy laid bare? From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 10 Aug 07 - 02:40 PM To the last writer - with deepest respect. Not to put too fine a point on it, but "Mr. Happy" is U.S. slang for a vibrator of a particular configuration. Now, you REALLY have me curious as to where this line is headed. Liam Clancy put out an earlier book, which I read long ago, depicting his early years, Catholic influences, etc., and what lead to his eventual teaming with his brothers and Tommy Maken in Greenwich Village, NY in the mid-1950's. A good read and full of insights. I am anxiously awaiting a chance at this new "mountainous" tome. |
Subject: RE: Liam Clancy laid bare? From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 10 Aug 07 - 03:30 PM Please be aware that this is no longer a "new" book. I believe it is out of print in the U.S. although some bookstores should still have it. |
Subject: RE: Liam Clancy laid bare? From: bill kennedy Date: 10 Aug 07 - 03:43 PM and maybe he felt he had covered it all in his first book, but Mountain of Women doesn't even mention Tommy Makem hardly at all |
Subject: RE: Liam Clancy laid bare? From: Greg B Date: 10 Aug 07 - 10:11 PM I translate it as "mons venerus" but then again, I might have it wrong--- |
