Subject: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: John MacKenzie Date: 25 Jan 02 - 03:36 PM Well I've just had my haggis, neeps, and tatties, all washed down with a glass or two of MacAllans, suitably softened with a smidgeon of highland tap water. Some hae meat but canny eat, Some would eat, but want it. We hae meat, and we can eat, Sae let the Lord be thankit Here's tae us, wha's like us. Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: DougR Date: 25 Jan 02 - 04:56 PM Giok: I've never had the chance to partake of haggis. From what I have heard about the epicurian pleasure, I'm not sure I have missed out on too much. Be that as it may, I wish you all the best, and all the haggis you can eat, washed down with copius amounts of MacAllans! Er, ...what are neeps and tatties? I'd make a wild guess tatties might be potatoes, but neeps? DougR |
Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: Herga Kitty Date: 25 Jan 02 - 05:05 PM DougR Neeps are swedes (in some countries used for feeding animals). You're right about tatties. |
Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: Jon Freeman Date: 25 Jan 02 - 05:05 PM Doug, I think you would call neeps rutabaga. Sweedes to me. Jon |

Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: Ron Olesko Date: 25 Jan 02 - 05:18 PM I thought neeps were turnips? |
Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: Jon Freeman Date: 25 Jan 02 - 06:39 PM Umm. I've just checked my dictionary (Chambers) and it says neeps is a turnip. I'm not sure how the Scots have neeps and tatties but if they are mashing them together, I much prefer to use the sweede - I love it. Jon |
Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: artbrooks Date: 25 Jan 02 - 06:53 PM The thought of haggis leaves me cold, and I can't take turnips under any name, but that's not important. Happy Burns Day to you all, from one who's Scots blood MIGHT fill a small toe!! |
Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: Peg Date: 25 Jan 02 - 06:56 PM Happy Burns Night! There are a number of events here in Boston but I am not feeling so well so am staying in; but I may put on his music later! (can't sing too well with this cold either but might try it...) Last year I put flowers at his statue in downtown Boston... I am also thinkig of Tony Cuffe, who did a guest stint on "A Celtic Sojourn" last year speaking about his Burns Night performance...we lost Tony recently, a Burns "scholar" and fine Scottish musician in his own right...I shall drink to them both and to poetic minds everywhere... (Peg lifts her beer) makes me wonder why we have not done a "virtual Mudcat Burns Supper" here in the forum before! hmmm...

Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: Snuffy Date: 25 Jan 02 - 06:57 PM Because it was the only night they could get a piper, I'm going to a Burns Night dinner next Saturday (Feb 2)! Tonight I went to a Christmas dinner. Well, we are a bit behind the times in Warwickshire WassaiL! V |
Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: Susanne (skw) Date: 25 Jan 02 - 08:43 PM We had an Irish Night here in Kiel today (really a huge local session), and I was the only one who remembered and made our two pipers play 'Auld Lang Syne'. Here's to Rabbie Burns! |

Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: GUEST,BOAB Date: 25 Jan 02 - 10:34 PM Haggis----more varieties than you could count in a month. And there's nothing wrong with a good haggis! Come in out of the cold cold night Catspaw, and if you can tell me what was in yer last sausage [other than the guaranteed "30% meat"] then I'll go halfway to forgiving your kinna derogatory dismissal of the greates poet ever to have graced the face of the planet, and who wrote{tongue in cheek!]an ode to the much-maligned sheep's stomach stuffed wi' goodies. The "rutabaga," in Scotland--AND England, --is universally dubbed "turnip"; a much more tasteful veg. than the miserable wee tottie things the benighted parts of the world call "turnips". Be all that as it may, at nine out of ten Burns suppers there is sure to be found an augmentation of the menu which will consist of beef and gravy, steak pie or other of the run of the mill kyte-stuffers, followed by some one of the many popular desserts. Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: catspaw49 Date: 25 Jan 02 - 10:46 PM Actually Boab, I can tell you what was in my last sausage. Pig lips. Really the entire head of the pig boiled down and after removing the cartilage and bone, ground up extra fine and added to a mash of cornmeal and flour and salt. It's called Scrapple or Krepples. And with all of that......and I have eaten haggis.......it's still far preferable to my Yankee tastes. But have yourself a high old time anyway!! Spaw |

Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: Tom French Date: 25 Jan 02 - 11:12 PM I've been told that the real haggis is best eaten after four hours of good Scotch whiskey. An' the haggis is best soaked in the same. Another hour of scotch to wash it all down completes the evening accordingly. But I suspect the 25th will then last at least another day, extended your Burnsian pleasure! |
Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: DougR Date: 25 Jan 02 - 11:50 PM A serious question: does one eat haggis sliced? Is it mashed in some sort of way like mashed potatoes? Grilled? Poached? Not fried for heaven's sake? DougR |
Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: JennieG Date: 26 Jan 02 - 12:20 AM I danced at a Burns night earlier this week with my Scottish country dance group, and they fed us haggis with neeps and tatties too - I had not tried haggis before but it wasn't too bad. DougR - the haggis was just heaped on the plate and the vegies were mashed; it's like a meat loaf that didn't hold together. One bloke was passing around his home brew brose; it could have been left for a while to mature (like several months, and he had only made it the previous day!) but it was very drinkable. I suppose there is enough Scottish blood in me to fill a thimble; my great-great grandparents came to Australia from Glascow over 150 years ago. Cheers and hoots mon JennieG |

Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: Hrothgar Date: 26 Jan 02 - 04:27 AM Is "good haggis" an oxymoron? |
Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: Hillheader Date: 26 Jan 02 - 04:58 AM Hrothgar Even as a Scot I think you're right. I once saw the recipe from the "First, catch your sheep.." stage and it put me off for life. Also I always think it's ironic that Scots revere Burns they way they do. If he were alive today they would probably say "keep that drunken womaniser away from my wife" and throw him out of his own Suppers!!! Maybe his title is mis-spelt and it should be the Barred of Scotland (as in barred from every pub and village he happened to chance through). The poetry is brilliant and incisive but I never understood the cult of the man. Davebhoy

Subject: RE: A happy Burn's night to all Mudcatters From: Jeri Date: 26 Jan 02 - 08:27 AM Dear Grammar Police, you're writing in sentence fragments. If one should feel the need to correct others' language, one should not make misteaks in there own. Someone once, in a Usenet newsgroup, once posted about having used leftover haggis in spaghetti sauce. The only reason I knew it was Burns Night was Mudcat, and by the time I found out, I was home and thinking about sleep. Oh well... |

And the holy day falling on a Friday, too. We used to have Burns' Nights celebrations at the Press Room, but we couldn't scare up enough audience. Pity. Now those who never showed up keep asking why we don't have one. Go figure. I just like carrying in the haggis (or is it that I like my own private piper???). We did as many Burns' songs as we could at the session, though, but I didn't manage to squeeze in "Nine Inch Will Please a Lady." It was a chaotic night (long story) not having anything to do with it being both Ewan MacColl's and Robert Burns' B.D. Giok, does the 5 pound note still have Robert Burns and a wee mousie on it?
