Of all you Mudcat regulars (members and guests) how many of you read this forum exclusively? How many of you regularly frequent this and other forums (and if you would be willing, share with us which other forums it is you frequent). I will start by saying I frequent several music forums, though I mostly lurk. This one, Irtrad list, and two non-music related political forums. I used to lurk in the Usenet groups, but haven't much since around 1997, when the volume got too high. I visit Irtrad through the archive. Anyone else willing to participate in the survey? |

I never even saw a forum before I came here. I've only posted a few times to the Annexe, and I don't read it regularly. I read the Mudcat pretty much every day, and I post to it most days at least once. Sometimes I like to read the "Newfoundland Kitchen" forum of the "Downhomer Magazine", but I have never posted there. And I sometimes read stuff a friend posts to the forum of the "Acoustic Guitar" site. |

I don't read EVERYTHING here, so is there some reason why this thread is taboo? I rarely ever participate in the silly crap that has been around recently, although I DO read it strictly for entertainment value. Simply don't see how anyone can take cyber-arguments seriously, if they don't have a sense of who they're talking to. Seemed like a good question. I try to stop in at Mudcat whenever I can. been here for close to four years, and look especially for discussions on traditionally oriented performers who use accompaniment. I find the discussions on early country music and blues quite fun, although I wish more people cared about them. Obviously I've started a lot of threads on how to play better, for those who care about stuff like that. The vocal ballad threads have been interesting, but I rarely post to them 'cause I'd rather see knowledgable discussions by people who PERFORM their music that way, than a lot of "me toos". I also care a LOT more about whether the songs are sung on key and with skill than whether a word has been left out, or if they're singing a "correct" version. I spend quite a bit of time on Red Hot Jazz (I've given the blue clicky many times) and "Old 78s", and correspond with a number of folks who think the "Shakespeare authorship" question is fun. Love the sites on Satire and "hoax busting" as well. Still love Mudcat, 'cause I've met so many nice folks here, but it's less interesting now than it was. Same as moving to a new town...at first there are tons of surprises...then fewer and fewer...but as towns go, it still suits me. Cheers Rick |

She immediately separates herself from the "regulars" with that statement – granted, she seldom posts, but why take an attitude of exclusivity? – and she also phrases it as if it's a continuation of a discussion, not a new discussion. The only other discussion Maire has posted to today, before starting this thread, is the "BS: I will not respond to a troll" thread, in which she made several degrading remarks about Mudcat members, calling some of them "bloody eejits", "thin-skinned primadonnas" and "a few clueless fecking Americans" for whom everything has to be "so bloody dumbed down" (so this could be seen as being the "first offensive post"). After she criticized the "Mudcat group" a second time, gnu responded with a "GFY". Later in that thread, she criticized a member for his "pompous arrogance". When gnu reacted again, she told him to "feck off and go take the bloody pledge [not to respond to trolls]" which could be interpreted to mean that she was identifying herself as a troll. That was at 1:24 pm. Then she posted this thread at 1:41 pm. Unrelated to her previous postings today? Sorry, but I have to wonder. If she had posted as a member asking the same question, she wouldn't have made it clear that she is holding herself apart from members and being disparaging and harshly judgmental of them. For that reason, I've decided to be circumspect about revealing the details of my posting habits on other forums, on this thread. If she's just genuinely and innocently interested in other people's forum-reading habits, then that's all well and good, but it's not paranoia to be wary of someone who says loudly that she looks down on people and then suddenly acts pleasantly toward those same people. Father supporting his family of six children living here was kidnapped by the security forces in Cameroonm this week, and we haven't been able to find out if he has been killed, or is being held incommunicado in a Douala hell hole. And then the week ended on an upbeat note when we had a Native American teacher, singer, and storyteller in to entertain and give a talk to our teens at the center. He ended his spiel with an Anishinabe version of the Ray Charles Pepsi commercial. Call me when you get a clue about the real world. |

I remember a time when umf seemed to spend more time argueing over what was or was not on/off topic than discussing music - heaven help Mudcat if a group concensus is needed on what is a troll or if we are to have self-appointed judges for others on this issue... After a time, and after some rather juvenile BS, I came to the conclusion that either I was growing up finally, or the people there were emotionally stuck permanently in their sophomore year of high school. So, it was a good change for me. I'd love to frequent this place a heck of a lot more than I do, but what I found after nixing the above described NG was that life was pretty fun, and time has been a rare commodity ever since. |

I already knew about Digitrad as a song base, but wasn't aware of the Mudcat discussion forum until Tyke invited me to the Ducks' barbecue at Whitby Folk Week last year, and Bill Sables suggested I join Mudcat. I usually check Mudcat threads and UK music folk daily, but if I was in a less pressurised job I'd be out singing rather than logging on to virtual substitutes. |

Subject: RE: BS: Doing a Mudcat Survey Here From: hesperis Date: 18 Feb 02 - 11:16 PM I mostly hang out at volunteer game development forums, where I can be useful as well as funny. ;) They're sort of work-related, as I'm one of the Admins for two of the teams. (Hero6 and The Unknown Hero.) Wish I could create games and game music - and get paid for it! That would be great. I check SourceForge a lot, too, as well as some php and html forums. Devshed is good, though I tend to just read. I come here for the friends and the music, and especially the music history, though not as often as when I first joined, last year or the year before. I also check a few other forums when I have time, and I'm on various mailing lists as well, for spirituality, health, computer stuff, etc. |
