If folks are near this and don't strive mightily to be a part of the audience, well, it's a hell of a big mistake. Ian Robb is the best. Shelley and Ann too. Wish I could be there.

Greetings:

Here's your chance to hear Finest Kind up close and personal. The trio of Ian Robb, Ann Downey, and Shelley Posen will be the featured performers at the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club's upcoming Fall Folk Music Weekend at Kutz Camp in Warwick, New York, just about 50 miles north of New York City. The dates are Friday through Sunday, October 21 to 23, 2005.

This weekend offers an unequaled opportunity to interact with other music-lovers through formal concerts, participatory workshops, and lots of informal music-making. In addition to Finest Kind, the program features Ellen Cohn, Barry O'Neill, Jean Farnworth, Evy Mayer, Heather Wood, Sol Weber, Anne Price, and yours truly, Steve Suffet. Mary Jones will be the dance caller, and there will also be a round-robin style campers' concert.

A few spaces are still available, so if you are interested in attending, please act quickly. Information is available at the NY Pinewoods website:

http://www.folkmusicny.org/

A descriptive flyer and booking form are available in PDF format at:

http://www.folkmusicny.org/FallWeekend2005.pdf

Or you can call Evy Mayer at 718-549-1344 after 11:00 AM Eastern Time.

Wonderful harmony. Fa-Sol-La, recorded by our own Rick Fielding, is one of theirs & The Old Songs Home, which I believe Rick would have loved to record, if he were still with us.

best,

bbbc

And it's only 50 miles from New York City. That's a mere 80 km for you those of you who have metricized. Or is metricated?

Hearing their harmonies is heavenly, but the weekend also offers lots of opportunity to interact with the performers and with others who like their music.

I wish I could be there for that, too. I pretty much like everything they do jointly or severally.

But they do seem to make the poor girl carry all the heavy stuff. Keep an eye out for that, will you Steve?

Yes, it will be a great weekend. And I can even give you a tentative list of workshop titles and presenters. To wit:

Benjamin Franklin – Folkie
Ellen Cohn

Our inventive founding father was a ballad enthusiast, writer of drinking songs, and a great observer of popular songs and music of his day. Ellen, Senior Editor of the Franklin Papers at Yale University, offers a delightful and informative look at Franklin and his relationship with American Folk Music.

Cowboy/Western/Novelty Songs
Ann Downey

Hailing from the southwestern U.S., Ann plays guitar, banjo, and bass, and has performed in bands playing old-time and cowboy music, bluegrass, klezmer, jazz, and swing throughout North America and Europe. Her charming and disarming renditions of songs and tom-foolery is an unbeatable combo.

English 101
Mary Jones

Whirl & twirl. Lessons from our wonderful master teacher of English Country Dance! It's a little gentler than contras.

Gay Nineties to World War II
Double Trouble (Evy Mayer and Jean Farnowrth)

Come sing pop, jazz, and folk tunes from America's gaslight era through the Second World War.

Harmony Singing
Finest Kind (Ann Downey, Shelly Posen, Ian Robb)

Want to hear how make musical magic? Never heard of a "jangle" chord? Did you miss this amazing workshop the last time they were with us? Join our star trio for an insight into their astounding feats of vocal legerdemain!

Jobs, Professions, and Other Pastimes
Sol Weber

Songs of work, working, and being overworked! Bring your voice, an instrument, an idea, and join in.

Labor Songs
Barry O'Neill

Some lesser known and older songs from further back in history. Also bring your own to sing.

Manna
Shelly Posen

Shelly says "I'll talk about my approach to writing songs on Jewish subjects, keeping clear of shtick and stereotype, trying to make the most of one's own experience (but not being a slave to it), along with more general comments on how I go about writing a song—any song. I'll sing some examples from the CD Manna, but also excerpts from the Jewish songs I've been working on in recent months. I'm hoping there will be discussion that opens on how a secular Jew writes a religious song, Jews singing folk songs in general, etc.

Old Songs of Old New York
Barry O'Neill

Historical pieces, dramatic songs, Irish songs, mainstream Americana, and work songs, set in or concerning the grand city of New York.

Ripe to Downright Rotten
Ellen Cohn

Join Ellen for a heap of these delicious songs about vegetables. They will absolutely whet your appetite for singing. She has a stack of material that we never even suspected had made it out of the root cellar!

Singing without the Crutch: Unaccompanied Song
Ian Robb

Get out from behind the instrument and let your voice ring out! Expression, passion, ornamentation, and artistry can all be found in your voice and performance. Learn from a true master of the genre!

Stories, Monologues, and Poems
Heather Wood

Bring a recitation, monologue, poem, story, etc. to share. No singing or instruments required, but they are welcome if you like.

Vocal Production
Jean Farnworth

Returning after a long sojourn, Jean will once again offer her popular workshop on Vocal Production. This session is great whether you are a beginner or a well-oiled and experienced singer.

Woody Rediscovered
Anne Price and Steve Suffet

New introductions to some of the Great Guthrie's lesser known works. Some were published or recorded in Woody's lifetime; others were found in the archives after his death. Bring your voices and your instruments, and learn some new old songs!

Once again, the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club's Fall Folk Music Weekend will take place October 21-23, 2005, at Kutz Camp in Warwick, NY. For more information, please visit the NY Pinewoods website: http://www.folkmusicny.org/

There are still spaces available, but you have to act quickly.

Still a few spaces left. If you want to book one, please call Evy Mayer right away at 718--543-4971, but not before 11:00 AM (USA Eastern Time Zone).

By the way, I got together with Anne Price last night to plan our Woody Rediscovered workshop, and she is pretty certain her lesser known Woody Guthrie songs will include Peace Call, Heaven My Home, Ticky-Tock, and Way Over Yonder in a Minor Key. My own will include Tin Horn Taxi, Sally Don't You Grieve, I'm Living in Coney Island 'Til I Die, and 66 Highway Blues. If we have time, we will teach some other songs as well.
