I caught an injured one once--took it to the bird repair shop...

I didn't try to play it, though...I was too busy avoiding it's beak!

Why do I feel I'm missing something here? Yes I have played a Seagull. I quite liked the head stock. The guitar had a nice appearance. It was unremarkable in playability and sound, good beginning guitar, although I like the Big Baby Taylor a bit better for that purpose. My friends at the BIG MUSIC STORE

About ten years ago I caught a seagull using a common everyday Rapala jointed fishing lure. Near the mouth of the Maitland River (Ontario) the stupid thing dove after it and got 3 hooks in the beak. Didn't fight any better than anything else its weight, damn it. I had to net the thing so that I could remove the hooks. We both survived. Come to think of it I once had more fight from an old lawnchair, though I didn't live release that.

More seriously...

A close relation to the Seagull, the Simon & Patrick, can be a worthy purchase for a few less dollars. Mine required a major fret dressing when new, so I also had a bone nut and saddle, Grover tuning machines (the factory ones slipped a bit), and strap buttons installed. All of this was worth the expense because I'd bought a "factory second" to begin with, so the original purchase price was considerably less than the usual street price. Altogether I think I paid about street price, and got a superior guitar. The S&P has a more or less Martin shaped headstock instead of that lovely Seagull shape, but that's okay with me, I don't watch it as I play. A good deal.

I find they tend to produce a raucous and annoying tone, but with very good sustain and surprising clarity. They are durable and sleek in appearance, and keep coming back for more. Also, "the price is right!" (to quote the Great William Shatner) All in all, a great deal!

No kidding! But Rosie prefers dead seagulls and dead carp. Living in the cradle of the Great Lakes, we have alot of both so she gets alot of rolling...

I hear that Lasido will become known as Godin. Does anyone know if this will affect the headstock names of their various lines? I rather like many of their instrument designs, and the prices are attractive too.

Yes, they work alot like a bagpipe. Stick the body under your arm, place the feet in your mouth and finger the bill.

It is the combination of chewing on the feet and tempering the pressure on the bill that produces the different tones. The quality is obviously different than a bagpipe but not at all unpleasant to the trained ear.

My preference is towards the Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) after it is two years old. To my taste, they have right pitch. The fully mature ones at four years old are too tired the purity of sound is lacking and the younger ones simply squawk and squell too much.

Everyone should try a gull at least once.

....raucous and annoying tone... perchance this "sharpness" (which is what I would prefer to call it, since I paid me money for it) will mellow ? I find it difficult to try to play while others in the room are playing thousand dollar guitars, and it's not just because I can't "keep up", so I hope a mellowing can occur. Still, it's done well at the beach in the rain - Beginners' Tip #1 : guitar + bonfire + beach + booze + rain = funny smell that lasts.

The California Gull is the State Bird of Utah because a huge colony that lives on Islands in the Great Salt Lake saved the mormon pioneers from starvation by eating up a plague of crickets...some say they took them out to the lake and spit them up and came back for more again and again....

There must be about 20 folk songs about this now if you want to start another insipid thread I bet people here could come up with most of them....

If you want a good cheap twelve string to throw in your car, take to the beach etc.... find yourself a Seagull..used ones can be had for about $200.

I walked into a regional chain music store this week in Louisiana (to buy a couple of harmonicas). I stopped to try all their guitars and banjo (yes, just ONE banjo). I was really intrigued by one of their Seagull guitars. What a great sound! This was a list price or $400 something, flat finish, no frills - with a sound that would knock you over. A really good sound, and loud as hell! It had a wide neck, not too deep, and little knotted at the head, somehow - but not a bad neck. No electronics, but just a really good guitar at a really good price. I gotta say I was impressed.

I don;t know how it will hold up over time, but I suspect it'll do just fine. I gather it had three ply back and rims (didn't seem to hurt the sound any) and a solid cedar top. It was certainly worth the price, even the list price. I haven't played many of their other models, but I surely was impressed with this low end model.

Yeah, Jed. That is exactly the reaction that most good players have when they pick one up. Before mine was destroyed by the goons at United, I used to chuckle everytime a good player would hear my 'gull. It was predictable. Their head would turn. Then I would play something else and you would catch them listening to the guitar with interest. Next song they would ask to play it. Then would come the inquiry about the brand. Then they would complement the action and sound. Then they would ask to play it again. Great guitars, which when you factor in the price, become fantastic.

Yes I just bought one and am trying to learn how to play it. The calluses are really building up on my fingertips, what a strange feeling! Anyway I am not sure about tone, as I haven't played many guitars. Only one other in fact that I can think of and that was a Fender. But it seems ok for me.

Oh, and barre chords...that's a joke right? Nobody can make their hand do that can they?

Morning Catters I have just aquired a new seagull to use in the band. Have a beautiful guitar made Canadian luthier Ted Thompson from B.C. and very loath to use it in public places,plus I couldn't bring myself to fit electronics to it. A gutar like that needs to stay in it's original condition I think, hence the reason for the seagull. Action feels good, neck is nice and thin (thats my preference) big volume sound and will fit the bill I'm sure. i The one thing I have noticed is that it seems to loose its ring when capo is fitted, but it is new and could mellow out. But in the wash up it will be a good workhorse.

To digress a bit I surpose can any one answer the following info? While travelling in England a couple of years ago I picked up a Japanese made guitar with a solid spruce top called "Kimbara" It appears to be one of the first models made for the english market according to the internal label. Any one heard of them?

Seagull guitars are only complimented with the addition of LR Baggs electronics... My 2 A Series Mahogany Folks are wonderful, at home or at gigs...

I prefer the Manx shearwater myself, it's much better for sustained notes.
