Subject: Need words to "Blue Danube Waltz"
From: burnsedc@freenet.tlh.fl.us
Date: 08 Jan 97 - 02:52 PM

Someone I know remembers that there were words to the famous "Blue Danube" waltz. I have looked through the songbooks at the library, but haven't found any. Wayne King and his orchestra recorded the song in the 30s, from what I have found, but it didn't seem to be the one that was sung. I also did a search on DejaNews and came up with a few possible sources, but they seemed to be in German. She thinks the song went something like, "Beautiful river," or "Beautiful Blue Danube," maybe both! Does anyone know where I can find the words to this, or who may have recorded it? Thanks!

can't remember the next couple of lines ...

Anyone else remember them?

The link to the German words by Franz von Gernerth, "An der Schönen blauen Donau," is still active, but the English translation link is dead.

I've seen the Danube, and it's true that it wasn't blue. I learned that when the waltz was composed, "blue" (blau) was slang for "happy."

Picture of the blue Danube

The Hungarians call it "blonde", the Romanians and Bulgarians call it "white".

A bit of trivia which is not common knowledge, even in Germany:

The Danube is a rare river that flows into two very different oceans many thousand kilometers apart. The young Danube splits and the major part of the Danube water joins via another small river the Lake of Constance and flows with the Rhine into the Northern Sea. The part of water flowing into the Rhine increases steadily. The time may not be too far away that all of the water of the young Danube flows into the Rhine. The state now is that on more than 200 days per year all the young Danube water flows into the Rhine. One hundred years ago that happened only on about 60 days per year. The "Danube" in these dry days reappears after some miles of a dry river bed with the next tributary. But in these days not a single drop of the young Danube is contained in the later Danube that leaves Germany.

When I was little, my Dad sang these words to me but I can't find them anywhere. Perhaps he made them up?

Oh beautiful stream... so clear and blue.
A radiant dream... we bring to you.
The stars seem to float... above the sky.
With you as you go... reflect the light.

That's all I remember except it ended with

On your way... to join... the sea.

As I remember from 1946-48.

Beautiful stream... so clear and blue.
A radiant dream... we bring to you.
The stars seem to float... above the sky.
With you as you go... reflect the light.
And gay is the song, and gay the song
You carry along, you bear along
By shores that you lave, with your wave
On your way... to join... the sea.

There may be and probably are more and different versions.

I have been somewhat confused about lines three and four but maybe we both have learned a little.

Some fragments of an English version that I remember from grade school (1940s):

River so blue,
Of marvelous hue,
. . .
. . .
You open my eyes
To . . . paradise.
Alive is my soul, is my soul.
To my heart the spring has come.

A radiant dream, we bring to you,
The sky seems to flow, the stream so bright,
With you as you go, reflects the light,
And gay is the song, and gay the song,
You carry along, you bear along,
By shores that you laythe,? that you laythe,?
Shores you laythe to join the sea.
(That word, laythe,? is pretty uncertain)

I might agree with others, that the last line was:

As sung by Hank Snow:

Written by: JAMES JOHNSTON STEWART, JOHANN STRAUSS
Lyrics © Warner Chappell Music, Inc., Universal Music Publishing Group

All the years have come, and the years have gone,
but the oft told tale is not true,
for of all the things the Danube is,
the Danube is not blue.
The Danube is green,
what's more it ain't clean.
It's green as a bean.
It ain't not serene.
And though the blueberry looks a little purple,
And though your maple syrup looks a little murple,
Don't believe what you have heard or you have saw.
Oh the Danube isn't blue, it's green.
Oh, the Danube is green as the grass in the spring
It's as green as the dollar you spend on a fling.
It's as green as the paint that you put on the screen.
Oh the blue of the Danube is greener than green.
The Danube isn't blue (Am I blue? No!)
The Danube has another hue (Who? Me? You!)
It's time we all came clean, (B.O.)
'Cause the Danube isn't blue, it's green.

We used to sing:

The Blue Danube Waltz,
By Strauss, the louse,
Who lived in a mouse's house.

Looks like the Muppets did a version, too.

I found these words online a while back - still my favorite version:
A beautiful stream... so clear and blue
A beautiful dream... of me and you
The stars seem to float... above the sky
With us as we go... they fly so high
We’re up in the air... up in the air
As high as we dare... high as we dare
We’ll never come down... we will stay
Until night becomes the day. Ba-Dum Bum!

Janet Van Fleet janetvanfleet@fairpoint.net

I'm so glad to see this thread, as I've been looking online for several years for the lyrics, without success. I learned the words to this in elementary school in Santa Fe, NM in the 1950's. In our music class, the kids were divided into two groups (probably boys and girls, this being the 1950's...) and one group sang the first part, the other the one in parentheses, until the last two lines, when everybody sang together. I have forgotten the two lines with the XXX (which I think were about the landscape it was passing through -- fields and towns, etc., but I just can't bring it back...) and also the first part of the penultimate line. I believe this piece was in the songbook we used, so somewhere there exists a printed document...

Beautiful stream (oh stream so blue)
You ripple and gleam (I dream of you)
The sky seems to glow (oh stream so bright)
With you as you go (reflects the light)
XXX
XXX
XXX      As you flow
Through (or to) the valley far below

My grandmother, born in the late 1800s, taught us this version. Her ancestors were from Germany & Austria. My father remembered their Christmas tree with actual candles on it.
The wording seems to closely match GUEST.Chief Ron

Beautiful stream, so clear and blue,
a radiant dream, we sing to you,
The sky seem to glow, the stream so bright,
with you as you’re go…ing, reflects the light,
and gay is the song, and gay the song,
you carry along, you bare along,
