Subject: No conflict between NOMAD & Getaway
From: KathWestra

For those of you who, like me, like to have their cake and eat it too, a serious potential folk music conflict seems to have been averted for this coming October.

Originally, the NOMAD festival, the FSGW Getaway, and the NY Pinewoods weekend were all scheduled for the weekend of October 18-20. Because of these potential conflicts (and the fact that NOMAD draws many of its performers from the DC and NYC groups), the NOMAD planning committee petitioned the school (in Newtown, CT) to hold the festival one week later, on the 25th-27th of October. I just learned from Patricia Campbell, one of the guiding lights of the NOMAD planning team, that the petition had been granted. This paves the way for two consecutive weekends of great music-making, rather than one weekend of feeling torn and conflicted. Yes!
Kathy

Nope, Chance, nothing clandestine involving me (other than that I've had my fingers crossed because I'm one of many regular NOMAD performers who might have a hard choice if the festival were held the 18th-20th). Among the many others who would have to choose are Dan & Bonnie Milner, Sandy & Caroline Paton, George Stephens & Mary LaMarca, Karen K., (Songster)Bob Clayton & Jennifer Woods, Charlie Baum, the Johnson Girls. I'm sure I've left out as many as I've listed. Now we can all do EVERYTHING. Ohboy.

As a new memeber, I feel left out of what seems like an inbred existing group here. How am I supposed to know what and where NOMAD is? What and where the FSGW Getaeay is? Etc. It's hard enough to read posts that presume we newcomers know who lives where, and on which side of which ocean or border. I'm glad you've been able to develop frienships over the years, but I hope it's not turning into Oregon or Washington, with the attitude that "OK, I'm here, let's ban anymore transplants." Thsnks to those who do mention WY or CO or CT or ME to put some frame of reference on it. Or is there a glossary I don't know about that spells out all the acronyms, and cross-references the members and their locations, and who's a performer under what name, etc.?

NOMAD is a festival of traditional folk music and dance, held annually in Newtown, Connecticut, NOMAD is now in its 14th year. The dates this year are October 25-27.

Here is the web site

John

And the Getaway is a weekend sponsored by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington [DC] (FSGW), held at Camp Ramblewood in Darlington, MD (the Northeast corner of Maryland). Many members of FSGW are also Mudcatters, and in recent years, many out-of-town Mudcatters have travelled to Maryland to join in a weekend of non-stop music making. It will run October 18-20 this year.

Further details can be had at The FSGW Getaway Website.

--Charlie Baum (who is the chair of this year's Getaway, as well as a sometime NOMAD performer).

Hi, DonD: (not Dondi? for a little cartoon trivia..)

As an old-timer of maybe three months, I'd just encourage you to take your time figuring out where people or places are, and if you want to know right away, do what you're doin'... just ask. Here I thought that the St. Albans Folk Festival was in St. Albans, Queens, where my brother-in-law lives, and when I checked it out, it's in Australia. I can get down to St. Albans from Derby, CT in an hour and a half. Asutralia's a little longer drive.

What you'll probably find, as I have, is that certain names keep appearing in the threads you're leaving comments in, and you start to find people with similar interests or attitudes. Just PM them, and you're sure to get a friendly response back. That's how I got to know Coyote Breath, Bobert, McGrath (who is impossible NOT to get to know... thank you, Kevin) CFlat, InOBU and Socorro. Same with NortonL, Sinsul,Dani and a whole slew of others. It's like stepping in to any new group. Mudcatters are definitely NOT excluding. My wife and I started to go to asmall church here, since we moved up to the valley, and even though everyone is very outgoing and friendly, we're just getting to know people, one at a time. We know where they live, and we're starting to put name to faces, but that doesn't mean that we know them yet.

And of course, the reverse holds true. Where do you live? I'm slowly learning where Mudcatters live so that if I'm traveling or performing in their neck of the woods I can let them know, and maybe cross paths. I'll be coming down to Washington, D.C. with my black gospel quartet on June 15 and look forward to meeting some Catters when I'm down there.

Welcome to Mudcat!!! There's always room for more!!

Jerry

Hi DonD. Welcome to the Mudcat! Thanks for pointing out that there are many newcomers here, including yourself, who may not have read previous discussion threads on NOMAD and the Getaway, and various other recurring events.

Another acronym you'll run across in the current batch of threads is NEFFA -- the New England Folk Festival, held each year at the end of April in Natick, Massachusetts. This year's featival is April 19-21. Many Mudcatters perform there each year.

I don't know where you are, but NEFFA, NOMAD, and the Folklore Society's Getaway are all great places to meet fellow Mudcatters, and to put friendly faces with the unfamiliar names. Hang in there. We were all new once.

Jerry's absolutely right: if you stick around, and send personal messages ("PMs" -- see the "Quick Links" box at the top left of this page) to folks you'd like to get to know, you're likely to feel far more comfortable in short order. One other thing you might want to do is go to the "quick links" box and select "Member photos and info". That link will take you to, among other things, a listing of Mudcatters by geographic location, so you can find folks who might live year you (or just figure out who we all are and where we come from, in case we fail to identify ourselves).

Welcome, DonD. Kathy Westra(who lives in Maryland and is a Board member of the Folklore Society of Greater Washington and a regular performer at NOMAD, NEFFA, and the Getaway)

Another one you will see - especially as June approches is "Old Songs" - held just outside Albany, NY.

Welcome, to the fold, DonD.
You have just experienced 'benign neglect'. There is little real malice around the mudcat. There is benign neglect. We neglect to welcome every new member, but we try. We neglect to explain all the what's, how's and whereunto's, but we try. Joe Offer's Perma Threads are testimony to that. If you want to know something search the threads, ask Max or Joe, or put up a new thread. Or just PM me or anyone else. You'll get lots of response, some humorous, some helpful, and some just "hello-in-there. There are no intentional barriers, but human nature runs rampant and full explanations do take time.

As for inbreeding, I'll never tell! (Unless confronted with evidence)

SHhhhhhh!

DonD, I'm sorry, I know how irritating it is when peope are chatting away and you haven't a clue what they are talking about, using strange in-crowd expressions, and you don't where they come from, and they all seem to understand each other. It's plain bad manners on our part and I apologise unreservedly. Greg. PS What do WY, CO,CT and ME mean?

I'm thrilled to hear that NOMAD & the Getaway won't conflict! I can't swear that we'll make it to both, but we'd sure like to try! We went to NOMAD for the 1st time last year & really enjoyed it. Anyone who's in the general area of Connecticut would do well to consider attending.

best,

bbc

WY = Wyoming, CO = Colorado,CT = Connecticut and ME = Maine. All the UStates have two letter abbreviations. They usually consist of the first and last or the first and second letter in a state's name. I usually try to write out the name at least once in a post because folks in other countries may not have any idea what the abbreviations mean. (Especially when you get to the M's: MS, MI, MN, MO, ME, MA, etc.)

Sorry about the state abbreviation query. I knew the answer. My posting was a little joke: DonD was objecting to people using acronyms and in-joke references in messages that he couldnt understand, so I was pointing out that non USA contributors wouldnt know what he was talking about, either.

Thanks all for the reassuance. I didn't mean to sound so petulant, just constructive. Being in Greater NY (any translations needed overseas?) Newtown and Maryland aren't too far away; I'd like to make one or the other or both if the social security check will stretch that far.
