You don't scare us one bit, fogie... :-)

Moving on from folksingers, I fantasized a lot about Diana Rigg back in the 60's and 70's, and more recently about Winona Ryder (Spaw has made fun of me for this, and is no doubt enjoying my discomfiture at her present legal problems...poor girl seems to have lost her sense of perspective).

I used to fantasize about being famous too, but not anymore. I now look upon it as a seductive trap, rather akin to landing in a huge tarpit or an inescapable briar patch...and I'm not a rabbit. If I had ever become "as big as Elvis" (to quote Dylan) it probably would have killed me long ago.

I have also fantasized about having magic powers, such as the ability to cause all bombs, bullets, missiles, etc. to return immediately and directly upon the heads of those who fire them. Ditto for handheld weapons like machetes, etc., and even for fists. This would soon end war, and the meek would indeed inherit the Earth.

I would also cause 55,000 squealing pigs to stampede through the US Congress when it was in session...just for the hell of it, and I would fill the White House from floor to ceiling with ping pong balls in the middle of the night, causing Dubya to become disoriented upon waking up in the morning. These would make for great news coverage on CNN.

Oh, and nuclear tests...I would arrange to have NOTHING happen at detonation time...nothing at all...except that a little flag would pop up with the word "BOOM!" on it. This would continue happening until the scientists and military people had nervous breakdowns or just gave up on the whole thing.

Let uz bee onest here. Are you all saying in effect that you are a load of wankers, or are your fantasies all sublimated into good works, like mine. With my purity regime I can remain 25% purer than an average folkie, at little more than the cost of a small Martin guitar per day. Apply here for my genital clamps.

Well, I fantasize about writing like Leondard Cohen, Bob Dylan, or Tom Paxton, or Kate Wolf,

singing like Maura O'Connell, Joan Baez, Tish Hinojosa, Miriam Makeba, Nana Mouskouri, or Eva Cassidy,

and playing like Doc Watson, Paul Stookey, Les Paul, Chet Atkins, or any of a large number of great guitarists--oh, and, yes, like Elton John or Marcia Ball at the piano.

Genie

P.S., Of the ones I've mentioned, the one I'd most like to explore 'beyond the music,' so-to-speak, would be Leonard Cohen. A very intriguing soul/body, I think. I don't care if he IS 67.

Yes, one tends to blather the first time...by the third time I met Buffy Sainte-Marie, I had it all worked out and talked to her in the relaxed way that I might to an old familiar friend...much more enjoyable for her and me both. You've just got to remember they are ordinary human beings like yourself, and not sweat it.

Also, looking for your hero to say something totally significant and unforgettable that will change your life is a foolish endeavour...so many people expected Dylan to do that every time he opened his mouth that he started trying to avoid them altogether...or got really nasty and sarcastic with them. There are some pretty funny examples of that in transcripts of his press conferences in the 60's.

Emmylou again --- and I actually got to meet her in her dressing room after a gig at The Shepherds Bush Empire (The Wrecking Ball Tour with Daniel Lanois). It was like being ushered into the presence of Royalty. She was as elegant and graceful as you would expect, in spite of looking rather tired and quite frail close up. I blathered and burbled like an idiot and got her to sign my copy of The Wrecking Ball CD (cringe) But what a memory!

Lucy Ann,

Indeed I have. And the most marvellous and relatively undiscovered singer she is considering the range and beauty of her voice! On her latest CD she does a lovely unaccompanied version of "Motherless Child" which Lady McMoo (my SO) has now picked up into her repertoire as a result.

Romantic fantasies? I've had many of those over the years... concerning Buffy Sainte-Marie, Joan Baez, Tish Hinojosa...

I've had other kinds of fantasies about Bob Dylan. Like having conversations with him, etc...

I've had numerous very interesting dreams about Dylan, Buffy, Joan, Cher, and Tina Turner. Even had one with both Bob and Joan in it! It was unusual, realistic, and in some respects downright hilarious...

A rich fantasy life is one of the finest things a person can have, I think.

At one point it was Christine Collister. When she was with Clive Gregson I kept on thinking what a lucky balding little fat fecker he was and how there was hope for other little fat feckers (balding or otherwise). I remember years ago booking Isla St.Clair at Newcastle Poly Folk Club and myself and the other organisers spending most of the time oogling and wondering whether she was wearing a bra or not fnarr !! fnarr !!

Anne Briggs sitting up on stage in the 60's wearing a short skirt, stockings and no knickers must have provoked a few thoughts not totally connected with the exquisite quality of her voice.
