Welcome, DonD.

What are your interests and influences? What brought you to the mudcat?

I hope you find it as rewarding here as I have, and make as many friends (and that's a lot).

Regards, Fortunato

Certainly Greg, I'm all for being polite, which is why I'm feeling very guilty that I'm ignoring DonD at his own party.
Hello DonD, I'm pleased you could join us.
Incidentally, if anyone wants to welcome me it would make me very happy - I think I must have come in by the back door, and nobody's noticed I'm here. I am very quiet though.

Catspaw: You're not showing any age at all - the newspaper comic strip ran until 1986 - but I remember reading the strip as a kid. In fact, I remember Patti Page singing "Little Dondi" to the kid (in a TV rerun of the 1961 movie inspired by the strip)!

Dondi the orphan had come to mind first for me, too, but when I looked up "Dondi" on google I came across the belly-dancer and figured I'd link to her site while I had it!

Oh, and a belated welcome to you, Watson! (Will you come quickly if we need you? *G*)

Thank you all,
As Herga Kitty noticed, I'm in Shropshire in the UK, near the River Severn in Ironbridge - in fact some days very near the river!
I found Mudcat a while ago, but probably on a day when the internet was trying hard to keep it a secret so I didn't work out what a fine place it was to be. But I soon found that when I was searching on Google for anything folky, amongst the links there would be some to Mudcat, so here I am, finding out what it's all about.
My main musical interest is in traditional song from the British Isles, but I listen to any sort of music.
I sing in sessions in and around Shropshire. Now and again people even listen!
I don't play an instrument, but one day I'll work out what to do with the collection of tin whistles about the house.
I won't mention the morris dancing - I'm easily embarrassed.
I'll go now before you all realise what a deeply boring person I am!
So, now all we need is to find out about DonD...

Watson, do you know a song called "The Crockeryware"? I've heard it sung and like it quite a bit. Not my genre, we do old time country (American) music, but if no one else sings the damn song soon I'm liable to do it (that's a threat, my UK accents are abominable). I assume it's UK Traditional.

DonD. where are you, let us know what you're up to as well.

I'll start.

My wife and I do old time comedy and music. We're based in Maryland USA. Having said that I've wandered through lots of genres, all with American Roots Music at the core. I've been learning to play the guitar since 1959, but I'm closing in on it. I may beat old age and slide into competency yet.

And cheers, to all the new members I've not known to welcome. Fortunato

No, crockeryware doesn't ring any bells with me.
I know someone who sings a song about a crockerydile though, but I suspect that's a different beast altogether.
I don't lay claim to any great depth of knowledge about folk (or anything else, come to that). I never cease to be amazed at the erudition displayed on Mudcat, so maybe someone else will leap in and help with that.

My understanding is that Crockeryware is earthenware dishes. Maybe pitchers and bowels? I think the story is that a young man has slipped into the house of a young woman at night and has stumbled into a shelf or something and the crockeryware has fallen and broken waking the parents?

No, Greg, no crab, no chamber pot, just two lovers and lots of broken dishes and maybe a subsequent nuptial?

From: DMcG

The Crockery Ware - from Marrowbones (Hammond and Gardiner Manuscripts)
Gardiner H.240/H.605. Isaac Hobbes, Micheldever Hants, May 1906

In Mansfield town there lived a spark
He courted a girl both gay and smart
He asked of her one favour right
If he could sleep with her that night

To my right-fol-lol-lol-lol-liddle-lol-thr-day
Right-fol-lol-lol-liddle-lol-the-day

Now this young girl she did contrive
How to fix a joke that night
So on the landing placed a chair
And on it place the crockery ware

This young man rrose in the middle of the night
Thinking to find his hearts delight
He banged his shins against the chair
And upset the old woman's crockery ware

The old woman arose in a terrible fright
And loudly she did call for a light
Says she "Young man, how came you here
Capsizing of my crockery ware?"

Miss Betsy lay in the very next room
A-laughing at the game going on
Says she "Young man.I do declare
You must pay my mother for the crockery ware"

The bobby was sent for without delay
The money down I had to pay
I paid three shillings, I do declare
To buy the old woman some crockery ware

Come all you wild and rambling sparks
THat love to ramble in the dark
Don't bang your shins against a chair
Or upset the old woman's crockery ware

=====
Can someone alert the song harvesters? I will work out the ABC given time

WOW!!! Little did I think when I stuck my two cents in that I'd get a million dollar welcome back. I got interested in folk music when I was a college freshman in 1944 (!?!) and found the house library had lots of 78 rpm records including the Library of Congress collections. The high point I remeber was attending a young Pete Seeger concert and singing so enthusiastically on the choruses that I was invited to "take the next verse' of a song I didn't know; I extemporized a passable verse about my ignorance to applause, but my face was as crimson as the school colors. Over the years I've accumulated a guitar and a banjo and a couple of tin whistles and someones home made dulcimer that I picked up in a junk shop for $10 - none of which I've mastered enough to appear in public. I'm located in Bronxville in Westchester County about 16 miles from Times Square. I found Mudcat by asking my local librarian to help me find the lyrics to a song I remembered from an LP I'd borrowed years before. She promptly handed me a printout from the DT of 'The Rumseller's Wife'. Before I noticed the dot org, I learned more than I ever wanted to know about small earthy-moving equipment. After learning lots of lyrics, and learning that some folks transcriptions from records varied a lot from what I had been hearing, I started exploring the Forum, got hooked, and here I am. Pleased to make your acquaintance, all. ALthough - like earth-moving equipment - there is the danger of learning more than I want to know about some terrible senses of humor. BTW I have worn a beard for decades, and it's now fairly long and white, enough so for me to play Santa Claus professionally au naturel, and I resented a reference in another thread to someone having 'lost his faith in the guy with the white beard'. Personally, and in my Santa persona, I strive to reaffirm that faith. WOW!!! Little did you think that you'd open these flood gates, did you?

Well, it's about time, DonD. Where you been boy? We thought you went to sleep and the hogs ate you.

Don't let the attempts at humor, taste aside, get under your skin. I imagine you've lived long enough to know there's no such thing as an ummixed blessing. Take what you need or like and ignore the rest. Anger at these folks is useless, counterproductive, and a vain attempt to change reality.

Now, DonD., Santa look alike, do you know who the Belsnickle is?
