Subject: Cookie reset failure? From: GUEST,Bigchuck, whose cookie has crumbled Date: 16 Apr 02 - 07:56 AM What's happening with cookies? I have reset mine several times over the past few days to no avail. Yet most others seem to still be posting as members. What's unique about my setup? Sandy |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: Jon Freeman Date: 16 Apr 02 - 09:12 AM From the help forum. I think it's the best way. Jon |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: GUEST,Bigchuck, whose cookie has crumbled Date: 16 Apr 02 - 09:24 PM I had already tried that Jon, to no avail. I have IE 5.5 and have it configured to clear the cache on closedown. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: GUEST,Bigchuck, baffled Date: 16 Apr 02 - 09:41 PM So OK, I just cleared out my cookie folder, logged out, then logged in again...still nothing. |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: Midchuck Date: 16 Apr 02 - 09:46 PM Max has obviously imposed a minimum moral character standard - 'Spaw presumably represents the acceptable minimum.... Peter. |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: Mark Cohen Date: 16 Apr 02 - 11:33 PM Peter, I think when I was on the high school debate team we used to call that an unwarranted assumption. (I'll leave it to you to figure out which.) Sandy, I'm far from an expert, but I wonder if you might have a corrupted cookie (now there's a concept...) which keeps throwing Max's server off the track. You might want to go through your cookie file (in the Windows folder) and delete any ones that say "Mudcat" or any others that you aren't absolutely sure you need, then go back and log in again. Just a thought. By the way, I'd be interested in an authoritative explanation of how the word "cookie" came to be used for this kind of file. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: Mark Cohen Date: 16 Apr 02 - 11:39 PM By the way, for those who have Netscape, the cookies are in the Program Files->Netscape->Users->[your name] folder. It's the one that says "THIS IS A GENERATED FILE. DO NOT EDIT!" Right. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: Sorcha Date: 16 Apr 02 - 11:44 PM I had to learn the hard way that deleting all Cookies (in the Windows file) does NOT delete all the Temporary Internet files (also in Windows). Usually, deleting all the Temp. files clears all the cookies, but not always. Also, that tab on Tools called Delete Files? It doesn't delete them all either. I now check all three places to make sure everything is empty. Just today, doing one search, I racked up almost 3,000 Temp. files. I clear everything every day. |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: Mark Cohen Date: 17 Apr 02 - 04:00 AM You're right, Sorcha. Keeping your Temporary Internet files emptied out will also help your machine run faster. Combine that with defragmenting your hard drive frequently, and getting rid of startup programs you don't need, and you may be surprised at the extra pep you get. All of which doesn't solve Bigchuck's problem, though...I guess we'll find out soon enough what does, or did. (And yes, the button on the Tools->Internet Preferences screen will delete everything BUT cookies! Those guys in Redmond are sneaky.) Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: Jon Freeman Date: 17 Apr 02 - 05:10 AM Sandy, have you checked your security settings? On IE 5.5, assuming you have not got Mudcat in a special zone such as "Trusted Sites", the security for the "Internet zone" needs to be set at medium or lower to allow cookies. (unless you are using a "custom" setting for that zone). Jon |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: GUEST,Bigchuck, whose cookie has crumbled Date: 17 Apr 02 - 07:51 AM Jon, good thought. I do change my setting from time to time. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: bigchuck Date: 17 Apr 02 - 07:57 AM OK, that did it. I guess that the last time I got fed up with cascading pop-ups I simply went to high security instead of doing custom settings like I usually do. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: Jon Freeman Date: 17 Apr 02 - 08:50 AM Sandy, I don't know if you have tried this one but one approach is to make Muacat and other sites that you wish to use cookies on trusted sites and set a security level of medium (or custom) for that zone and set the Internet zone to high. I believe an entry of *.mudcat.org will cover all of the Mudcat servers/mirrors. Jon |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: Mark Cohen Date: 17 Apr 02 - 07:08 PM Hey, I never even knew about the security settings--I'll check it out forthwith. This means there may be a lot fewer cookies for the ants to feed on...great! (Still looking for the answer to why they're called cookies...) Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Help: Cookie reset failure? From: Jon Freeman Date: 17 Apr 02 - 08:38 PM Another one Mark... IE, I think from 6 onwards, has a page in the precerences that attempts to control cookies by allowing you to set options such as blocking 3rd party cookies. I am on a Java version of Netscape 4.78 at the moment. This one has the option "Only accept cookies originating from the same page as being viewed" - same sort of thing - it should prevent the banner adds on a page placing thier cookies. Jon |
