Been meaning to have a count-up for some time ! Me: guitar, keyboard, mandolin (borrowed from Ian B), penny whistle - and getting a bodhran with my birthday money (I hope !!) * My 13 year old daughter Isobel: flute, clarinet, penny whistle, 3 recorders, cornet, set of bongos, rainstick, mini panpipes, violin, glockenspiel, KAZOOS ! (and probably various percussion bits and pieces that, as Anahootz says, seem to appear and disappear from unlikely places from time to time)* Inherited from my dear, late dad: 2 piano accordions, keyboard, heaven knows how many harmonicas and probably even more ocarinas than Chip 2447 admits to !* I have this feeling that I've missed some things out ...

Once I had a total of 37 (when I was in the musical repair business!). But Lady McMoo made me sell most of them! Now it is just:

2 steel string acoustics (Lakewood + "Japanese" Lowden)
1 very old French "palour guitar" (still good for slide work)
1 classical guitar
1 custom built electric (of unknown provenance!)
2 acoustic mandolins (custom Eccleshall + 100 year old DiMeglio neapolitan)
1 octave mandolin (Hathway)
1 short scale tenor banjo (Lyon and Healy c.1925)
1 balalaika
1 little greek mini bouzouki thing (forgot what it's called!)
1 Roland midi keyboard
1 upright piano (Zimmerman)
1 set of Latin Percussion (Meinl tumbadora and conga and Supercussion bongos) + assorted claves and shakeables
1 djembe
1 African shoulder drum (forgot the exact name again!)
1 D whistle (Chieftain)
1 G whistle (Overton)
the odd harmonica
1 set of Thai bamboo pipes

Hell's teeth! That still adds up to the best part of 30. Better not let her Ladyship see this!

IAS...? Better get on those tablets again!

Best regards,

mooman

Sleeve notes of English Country Music:Reg Hall writing on the subject of Walter Bulwer(English trad fiddler) "in his cottage at the time were seven fiddles of various sizes,a viola,a cello, a double bass, several mandolins, a mandolin-banjo,a 5-string G banjo, a 6-string guitar-banjo, a banjo with 7 strings and a complete drum kit.In addition to that there was a piano and a harmonium which his wife Daisy played".Quite a collection. Especially if you considerthat he also played clarinet, trombone and 1-row melodeon, which don't appear on the list. Surprisingly similar to my list,as I come from a quite different tradition to Walter Bulwer .(the main difference would be my 6 guitars to his none...I was born 60 years after him).

Wow, and I thought my house was getting "over instrumented".

I have a 1900 "parlor" guitar, a Yamaha FG200, a Gibson Songbird (brand new, still has "factory" strings on it) a Saga 5 string, a Alvarez 5 string, an old Oscar Schmidt 12 bar autoharp, a "newer" Oscar Schmidt 15 bar autoharp, a no name mandolin, a Sears and Rowboats electric organ a clutch of pennywhistles one each of all keys made by Generation and a few more like Clarke and some local bought at Fort Des Chartes during an encampment. I will be acquiring a Bart Reiter fretless 5 string soon and would like to sell (or whatever) the Yamaha, the parlor guitar and the older Oscar schmidt autoharp (sell, preferably because I REALLY want that Reiter fretless).

I have a case for the Oscar Schmidt, if anyone is interested in the above I can be emailed thusly:

BTW, have you noticed that most of the folks that make their living with their instruments are not listing them here? Might be a message there, folks.

Actually, I do make my living with my instrument.I teach Choral music in the public schools. I have been a church organist for 30 years. I have an album out on which I play my fiddle (date scratched on back by my 3rd Great Grand. 1823), concertina (anglo), guitar (1999 Martin D 28), and mandolin (Martin 1960). I own a Bauer 5 foot grand piano, and a studio piano (Wurlitzer). The 5 foot Baldwin is in the living room with my string bass. I perform on Naill Bagpipes in our local band. I own 4 tin whistles. My husband is the competition bass drummer, my son is a scottish snare drummer. We have bodhrains and dejembes, shakeres and all manner of shaken and rattled instruments. I have a baritone ukelele -plays just like the guitar. And an old diatonic C squeeze box that was traded to a Ship's Chandler in Baltimore in the 1800's. Each of the instuments are performed on in public. Am I making a living with this?. . . . Just barely. But I am having lots of fun.

Thanks, Heely, for pointing out that my post implied something I didn't mean to say. What I was referring to was that they might be concerned about folks with less than honorable intentions knowing what they have.

I did not mean to imply that the folks posting were anything less than accomplished, as my post seemed to imply.

Thanks for helping me clarify that.

I wouldn't be too worried, Greg. I have been in the homes of a number of our most distinguished members, and I was wondering why they hadn't posted. Then it came to me that they probably just didn't want to announce to the world what the inventory is in their homes.

Didn't mean to concern you, but did want to provoke some thought on the matter.

I wonder whether giving up smoking and spending money on instruments was such a good idea given that my house is quite small. I am now resticted to buying instruments that will fit on the bits of wall left between all the above. I do have a very understanding partner who, I think, gauges my current level of insanity against the number of instruments ( and cameras)I have. I think that I had better go check that my insurance is up to date. ( and 2 cats)

I teach voice so I have a pitchpipe. Also, a violin that I am determined to learn - no matter how bad I am.

My husband is a classical/jazz pianist with a love of electronic equipment so we converted the garage to a small studio then we added more keyboards and drum machines in the house. Now, he hikes up to the park with a keyboard on his back so he can play with nature!

Jeez-o-flip, Troll! Good googamooga, but where do you *put* 47 freakin' guitars, man?!?! :D

Wow! You're one hell of an addict there, m'friend. I'm sure there's a 12 step group out there for you. ;D

In any case, I own 5 drums. I play 2 regularly, and occasionally take one of the remaining 2 off the wall to play. I also own 2 tin whistles which I have never learned to play. My daughter does remarkably well with them, however. And, she has a violin in the house.

That's it, all told.

John from Hull...
Ocarinas are ancient globular flutes found in China and South America. They are suitible for playing anything from A to Z. Mine range in size from about on inch in diameter(producing a light airy sound, much like a tin whistle), to the big bass which is about 6 inches in diameter and has a haunting melocholy tone...
