Subject: Lyr Add: YOU NEVER EVEN CALL ME BY MY NAME From: Sheye Date: 09 Apr 98 - 11:06 AM YOU NEVER EVEN CALL ME BY MY NAME Performed by: DAVID ALLAN COE C GI've heard my name a few times in your phone book I've seen it on signs where I've laid But the only time I know, I'll hear David Allan Coe Is when Jesus has his final judgement day. CHORUS: (enter now the Steve Goodman story. The first half is played with a background of C and G. Just before Steve writes back with the perfect Country and Western song, it is just a straight background C chord.
Well, I was drunk the day my Mom got outta prison. CHORUS:
So I'll hang around as long as you will let me C G F C |
Subject: RE: You never really called me by my name From: Henry King Date: 09 Apr 98 - 01:30 PM I think the last verse had a number of different versions (the idea being to cram in as many country themes as possible) I remember the first line as: When the dog died and mama got out of prison and later on, a "semi truck" instead of a "pickup truck". |

Subject: RE: You never really called me by my name From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 11 Apr 98 - 02:35 PM The lyrics above are somewhat different from the Steve Goodman version I have on vinyl --
I've seen my name a few times in the phone book Did Goodman write the last verse about the pick up truck? It isn't on the version of the song I have. I also thought that it was John Prine who wrote the last and later verse. Along the lines of this song, Goodman's "Don't Do Me Any Favors Any More" is a pretty good country song. |
Subject: RE: You never really called me by my name From: Roger Himler Date: 12 Apr 98 - 01:04 AM In concert, Steve once gave a long spoken introduction that included a discussion of the value of alcohol to the song-writing process. He related that he wrote all but the last verse originally. That's the song he recorded. But he sent the song to "The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy" AKA David Allan Coe. DAC told him it was not the "perfect country and western song" because of what it did not include. So Steve wrote the last verse and DAC approved. I believe DAC relates the story in a similar way on his album. |
