A Lady sang this at Girvan last night. It's about the effects of drink on man. I've been told it was recorded by a band called Steel Bunnies but I can't get any more info. I'd love the lyrics if anyone can help.

Is it something like:

O the drinking's nae for you, my bonnie lassie-o,
O the drinking's nae for you, my bonnie lassie-o,
O the drinking's nae for you, for your liver winna boo,
And your belly's roarin' fu', my bonnie lassie-o.

Have you heard Liz the Squeak's version; "Oh , the chocolates not for you, my chubby lassie-oh"?

BONNIE LASSIE-O (The Shearing's Nae For You) has the chorus: "O the shearing's nae for you, my bonnie lassie-o, / O the shearing's nae for you, my bonnie lassie-o, / O the shearing's nae for you, for your back it winna boo, / And your belly's roarin' fu', my bonnie lassie-o."

Cut and paste, change a couple of words, and boom! There you go. Shame I forgot the line breaks.

Hrothgar that the sounds like the one and the tune mentioned sounds right too. The verse that sticks in my mind is

O the drinking's nae for you, my bonnie laddie-o, O the drinking's nae for you, my bonnie laddie-o, Ye got hame at half past three and ye hadnae had yer tea Ye were sick all over me, bonnie laddie-o.

Any more verses, anyone?

On the spur of the moment
O the drinking's nae for you, my bonnie laddie-o,
O the drinking's nae for you, my bonnie laddie-o,
Ye walked hame at half a tilt and all yer beer was spill't
And ye hadnae on yer kilt, my bonnie laddie-o
Keep 'em comin

The alcohol is leaving and memory returning-

O the drinking's nae for you, my bonnie laddie-o, O the drinking's nae for you, my bonnie laddie-o, Ye have trouble in the night 'cause ye cannae find the light And the toilets on the right,- bonnie laddie-o

I don't know the original parody you referred to but feel moved to add an impromptu verse to the one building here:

Oh, the drinking's not for you, my bonnie laddie-oh
Oh, the drinking's not for you, my bonnie laddie-oh
To the barmaid you did speak,
and some part of her did tweak
And your case comes up next week,my bonnie laddie-oh

Oh, the drinking's not for you, my bonnie laddie-oh

It wouldna mak ye pee the bed, my bonnie laddie-oh

Subject: Lyr Add: LADIES' EVENING SONG (Trad / James Hogg)
From: Susanne (skw)
Date: 06 May 02 - 06:38 PM

This is it, I think - I'm too lazy to look for it elsewhere. As sung by The McCalmans on their 'Ettrick Shepherd' LP (1980).

LADIES' EVENING SONG
(Trad / James Hogg)

Oh the glass is no' for you, bonnie laddie O
The glass is no' for you, bonnie laddie O
The glass is no' for you
For it dyes your manly brow
And it fills you roarin' fu', bonnie laddie O

Then drive us not away wi' your drinkin' O
We like your presence mair than you're thinkin' O
How happy will you be
In our blithesome companye
Taking innocence and glee for your drinking O

Now your e'en are glancing bright, bonnie laddie O
Wi' a pure and joyful light, bonnie laddie O
But at ten o'clock at night
Tak' a lady's word in plight
We will see anither sight, bonnie laddie O

There's a right path and a wrong, bonnie laddie O
Oh you needna argue lang, bonnie laddie O
For the mair you taste and see
O' our harmless companye
Aye the happier you'll be, bonnie laddie O

Oh, the drinking's not for you, my bonnie laddie-oh

An' were ye not quite so frisky
ye'd hae thought that jump tae risky

I'm guessing the band would be the Steel Bonnets, not the Steel Bunnies—but I am unable to find any confirmation that they actually recorded such a song.

You should not be drinking shorts, bonnie laddie-oh!
Vodkas, whiskys gins or ports, bonnie laddie-oh.
They are much to strong for you.
They may make you call for Hugh!
You should stick to Irn Bru my bonnie laddie-oh

Nice to see this thread re-vitalised. I may combine some verses for the club tonight.

Heavy drinking's not for you, my bonnie laddie-oh
You should stick to one or two, my bonnie laddie-oh
If ye stretch to three or four, or, heaven help us, more
Ye'll be stretched out on the floor
My bonnie laddie-oh.

Keep them coming, I want to be able to select from several verses.

Cheers
Nigel

Pulling some verses together (whether 'remembered' or newly written), and standardising the layout:

The Drinking's Nae For You

O the drinking's nae for you, my bonnie laddie-o,
O the drinking's nae for you, my bonnie laddie-o,
Ye got hame at half past three and ye hadnae had yer tea
Ye were sick all over me, bonnie laddie-o.

O the drinking's nae for you, my bonnie laddie-o,
O the drinking's nae for you, my bonnie laddie-o,
Ye walked hame at half a tilt and yer beer all was spill't

Any suggestions that we create a Welsh version (That pork dagger,'s not for ewe) should be strongly resisted.

He might well have retorted:

Take away L and that is he.

I assume that the original song is ~

O the shearings not for you me bonnie lassie O,
O the shearings not for you me bonnie lassie O ~o
tThe shearings not for you, for your back it will nay bowe,
And yer belly's rolling fue me bonnie lassie o

The tune is from this of course and can be found "in another place"

Two points.

I dimly remember a song where the girl is trying to dissuade her lover from joining the army and going off to war. Title "The fighting's not for you" or something similar. Can't recall any of the words though.

And some more lines from the "drinking" version:
Don't go telling me your tales
Of your seven pints of Gales',
They'd have heard you down in Wales
    My darling laddie-O.

I guess for me this has been an eye opener. I have never heard these words to that tune. The tune is 'Let us haste to Kelvingrove' which is an olde Scottish Folk song. I have however heard 'The shearing's not for you my bonnie lassie O' sung to the tune.
