Final score in game 7 of the semi final match between the Detroit Red Wings and the Colorado Avalanche: Wings 7, Avalanche 0. I felt strongly they would win, but never expected this score. I guess the lads just decided enough is enough. Next up, Carolina. Got to be a song there somewhere. I wish they were playing a Canadian team so I could get a decent bet going with my buddy, Fielding. Or Willie O. Or Justa Picker, or.......................

IMO, this has gone on way too long. I'll just be glad when it's over. Hockey in JUNE?? Moreover, now that all the Canucks are out, I don't care who wins.

All the best,

The horror! The horror!

I heard that some of the staff of the Joe Louis Arena snuck into the Avalanche locker room and spiked the Gatorade with LSD. There's no other explanation for Patrick Roy's complete collapse. Mick said the Redwings decided "enough is enough". Well, duh! When they score 2 goals on their first three shots, enough was enough in the first two minutes of play. Question : Would the Avalanche have been better off playing with an empty net than with Roy in there?

Good luck against Carolina anyway. Maybe we'll fork over the Cup if you guys win...maybe we'll hide it somewhere on Mount Elbert.

They were just selling beer up until the last game. The only series that is 100% "real" is the final. If Det vs Col had been the final, it would have only gone four or five games. Just watch the difference in puck control strategy in the final... you'll easily see the difference. You'll be able to count the number of times the puck is dumped out to centre ice and the number of line changes and find that they very close. As well, the ref and linesmen will change their tunes dramatically.

That might be cynical but you just watch the differences. There's gonna be some real good hockey. Not like the crap we have witnessed lately.

Big Mick -- Who the hell ever heard of hockey in Carolina, Tampa Bay, and Dallas???? -- Smile when you say that, boy, or I'm gonna have to come up thar and give you a serious ass-whupping! The Stars will back to haunt you in the fall -- now that we've dumped the depressive Belfour -- so play nice, boy, and we just may to easy on ya! ;-)

I was backing the Leafs, too. If they'd gotten to the finals, that would have been great.

Ooooohhhhh, that was heaven last night when ol' Patrick skated off the ice (sorry, LEJ) -- I sat on the sofa giggling . . . cocky lil' so-and-so. Have to admit though, he's a fantastic goalie. It just seemed like such poetic justice after that Statute of Liberty thing he pulled in Game 6, followed by the fatal 'Doh!'. (hehehehehe).

So, even though I usually back the underdog, I'll be yelling for the Wings on Tuesday. Besides, any year that the Sharks (a plague on their hockey pucks) don't make it into the finals is a Great Year For Hockey!! ;-)

Damn, Gael Goddess of my dreams, it took you long enough!!!!! I posted that comment in the hopes that you, Marum and Guinnesschick would rush to defend your fair, though tumbleweed infested city................LOL. We look forward to youse folks making your way back to the playoffs. And we appreciate your cheering for us. I am pulling for Hasek to get his ring. He has played amazingly well, even in spite of his occasional lapses. We count on one of those types of games per series.

And if anyone is foolish enough to make the mistake of thinking that Carolina isn't going to be tough needs to heed the words of Stevie Yzerman. He said they have something special happening this year. Wings in 5. Yes, I will take bets.

see...the 'hawks taking tee times in early may again?

Steve Y's obvious flattery and respect for the 'canes and their organization aside, the Wings will crush them. The $30 million boys (shanny, hull, and luc) seem to have pulled their well-paid heads out of their asses, and no one on Carolina's team can pull the trigger like those 3.

Oh, sure, Francis and Gelinas have rings, so they've been there and seen it...Wesley got to the finals as Bourque's partner in Boston...but you would have to carbon-date Martin;s ring now, and the last time glenn was in it for the cup was (GASP) about 20 years ago.

Channeling the spirit of Jimmy the Greek, here is my prediction...
Wings in 4. Goals for: 11+ Goals against: <5

Detroit are a tremendously talented hockey team. I never would have bet against Roy in a 7th game, but as someone who played goal for many years, I know that Patrick had "one of those nights", defelections off of his own players sticks, good save where the rebound bounces on to the stick of an uncovered Red Wing. Every goalie has one or two of those games a year (as well as having opposite, the games where a screen shot hits your elbow and stays out and a shooter fans on a shot when you're out of position etc.) Patrick was unlucky that it happened in such an important game. Is the guy a Hot Dog who got caught Showboating in the previous game? Yes. Do I like the guys huge ego? no. Is he one of the top five money goalies ever? Absolutely.

Don't count Carolina out yet. They beat New Jersey who are still a fine team, they beat Leafs who were playing some pretty good hockey. Goaltending wins or loses Stanley Cups. Irbe has been absolutely brilliant in these playoffs. If he continues to play the way that he has been, this will be a long series.

BTW, Hasek's nickname is "Kramer". The next time you see him interviewed try picturing the wild hairstyle of the Seinfeld character, there is quite a resemblance.

Wings in 4. Carolina is cold from being off so long then they have to make the trip to Detroit. Canes don't have any Stanley experience as a team while Detroit has two cups already. Carolina does not have the depth. They have no one who can keep up with Sergei. Holmstrom's the best screen man in the NHL. Forget about how Hasek will play and think about what's going to happen to Irbe. Maltby and Draper ain't letting nobody in with that puck. Wings in 4.

I live in the Sacramento area, and I don't want to hear about basketball today. We were that close to beating those Los Angeles people who think we're a cow town. Game seven of the series, and we lost it.
Dang.
Maybe we need a hockey team to help us forget our beastly summer heat. I used to love listening to the Red wings on the radio when I wasd a kid in Detroit.

Mick- I live in Alaska...no, not in Mystery, Alaska, in Juneau.

I grew up in a Hockey household, with Pa playin' for the minors (Seattle Ironmen, when they were still semipro), and having aspirations to play for the now-defunct Totems. I played minor, then Senior C and B leagues, then was sidelined by injury and ended my hockey career at the ripe old age of 25.

Now I just sit in my easychair and spill beer everywhere while ranting at the idiots on the Ice to play old-time hockey, Don Cherry-style.

Joe, bummer about the Sacto Kings, eh? Too bad that Adelman let Stojacovic AND Pippen touch the ball in the OT...I Am still amazed that Jackson (is that his name? the other guard? the guy who COULDN"T MISS WHEN THEY LET HIM PLAY...) sat on the bench for the entire 3rd period.

Oh well, there's always tomorrow...at 7 pm EST, hehehehe.

Hey listen up.....Just as soon as the columbus Blue Jackets hit their stride the SC will takeup permanent residence in the Buckeye State. At the rate things are going and the way those boys are playing, I figure this should be no more than say, 50 or 60 years. So far we've only achieved notoriety for killing a fan so there is nowhere to go but up.

(All kidding aside, that girl's death was truly tragic. The family has been on the news a lot still and they are having a hard time coping as I think any parent would....Going to the game was an early birthday present from them)

It sure won't be a four game series. This Carolina team shouldn't be taken lightly. On paper, the Wings are awesome. However, Hasek has the rap against him of never winning "the Big Game". Okay, he was in for the 98 Olympic win against Canada, but that was a shoot out where anything can happen. Hasek is very emotional and can be "got to". Irbe seems to be unshakeable.

I am with Steve on this one. While I feel very comfortable in saying that the Wings will outshoot and outscore them, Carolina is a better team than you all are giving them credit for. The defense against four awesome lines will ultimately cost them the series. But Hasek has had a bad game in each of the series so far, and when you couple that with a relatively young and talented bunch of 'Canes, it adds up to a five game series. In fact, don't be surprised if the win comes in the first game.

Numbers don't mean everything, but Irbe has an unbelievable Save Percentage of .949 in the Playoffs. His goals against average is more than half a goal per game better than Hasek's. Now, this could come crashing down in a hurry, a game like Roy's seventh could throw it all out of whack, but he allowed six goals in six games versus the Leafs. He allowed just one goal in over seventy shots in the last two games and had three overtime wins. We are seeing something special here folks, I hope he keeps it up. His positioning and anticipation have been flawless. He made some absolutely Miraculous saves look easy against the Leafs.

The Wings are older and are more prone to injuries. It ain't gonna be five either. I say Wings in seven, but don't be surprised if it's Carolina in Seven.

...who were, in everyone's eyes, a neutered team. No Sundin, then Sundin playing at 50-75%...no Tucker, then a Tucker who couldn't get a biker riled up...Domi? Who?

Carolina hasn't played against ANYONE in the playoffs that can shoot like the Wings. And c'mon, let's face it, Scotty Bowman's teams LIVE for the playoffs.

Still goin' with wings in 4...but gonna watch the first game on the edge of my seat.

People here keep trying to make this Hasek-Irbe. Says who? Irbe has never faced a Wings 2-man rush down the ice in a Stanley finals. When he proves he can stand up to that--something even Roy had to eventually bow to--THEN and only then is it even worth speculating that this is going to turn into a Hasek-Irbe duel. Hasek is not likely to have that much to do. The Wings have a nasty tendency to keep the puck in the opponent's ice for as long as a minute--and that was against the best defensive team in the NHL!! Get with it, folks. The Canes are seriously, seriously outclassed here.

Mick,

Did you see any of the Canes/Leafs series? I watched almost every game, these guys are for real.

However, my hockey prognostications have been wrong in the past. Before the Olympics I thought the U.S. had a very good chance at two Gold medals (ouch, Cheap Shot).

Fielding dressing in sequins and hosting a disco show? Based on some of his accounts of his past gigs, don't be surprised if he hasn't already done it. How much worse is that than performing at a Nudist Camp, which he has freely admitted to here. (I can't think about that one without thinking of Rick doing his best Inspector Clouseau).

Wings in 5. They'll toss the 'Canes a gimme - so they can wrap it at home - Ain't NUTHIN' like a Detroit home crowd to scare the bejesis out of some folk. Even when the Dead Things were the rule of the day, it was scary!

THREAD CREEP! Was on the phone with the local constabulary Sunday night around 11:30 PM. Tryin' to get some sleet before my 7:30 AM Monday meeting - folks around the corner start yelling and hollering and swearing loud enough to wake me up and send the dog into "I don't know what it is but if it comes any closer I'm going to tear it apart" mode (gotta love females from breeds raised to herd animals and protect people). Called the local cops to report that "something" was going on - they asked if it was a party or a fight - I said that it was hard to tell - particularly with these folks.

5 minutes later three cruisers roll in - then it gets real quiet. 10 minutes after that - one of the "neighbors" walks past shouting threats at us - that prompted a call to record the incident. Dispatch desk DID read back the report - it seems three very intoxicated people were celebrating the Lakers win by standing on the sidewalk in front of their house being loud and unruly. It seems the folks in the upstairs apartment from these folks had bet the other way and were shouting things back. Cops told 'em to quiet down and get off the street or they'd bring 'em in for drunk-an-disorderly (bad news for the 2 on parole for drugs - I live in an INTERESTING area). You could hear the dispatch guy scratching his head when I said "Oh, the Lakers played today? They must have made it to the NBA playoffs... Pity they don't play a man's sport... hockey or rugby..."

Cheers -

Pete

Okay, which sport are we talkin' about here? Curling, lacrosse or tiddlywinks? You ask me, the hamster races in Port Severn are much more exciting, and usually do not produce such a lopsided score. You haven't really lived till you've seen 50 hamsters jostling for position at the start line, and then hammering each other into the boards as they hit the final stretch. Look guys, if ya can't beat 'em in the cage, ya can't beat 'em on the turf! These pansies who complain about violence on the exercise wheel are a buncha wimps! Wings in six. They lose the first one after taking the Hurricanes too lightly. They take the second now that they're awake. The third is evenly played but the Wings win in overtime. Canes come out desperate for #4 and win a very physical match. Detroit takes the next one, breaking the spirit of the exhausted Canes who realize "we did pretty well just to get to this point". Last game won by Wings as Canes "go through the motions".

But I could be wrong.

Dear Hubby and I are going with the Wings in 5. Carolina has been resting way too long -- even though if the first game had been this weekend, they'd still wiped out by the more Cup-hardened (pardon the pun) Wings.

After watching both the Eastern and Western Conference finals, I have to agree with the opinion that the Western style of play will make processed sugar out of the Canes. The Leafs were an easy win, and I don't see the Canes being able to stand up to the beating they're going to get from Detroit.

Mick and I usually were in agreement... back when I was a little more regular here... As I sit in the shadow of the "Joe"... I see NO chance that the North Caroline team has what it takes to even put on a lively (well, we got this far) locker room scene... let alone challenge for the cup... Makes me long for a Wings - Habitants series... those were the good old days.

Dammit Al, I keep trying to tell you to not go against me in these things.......hahahahaha So far I am right on the mark. The 'Canes played a very good game. Did just what they needed to do and kept the Wings off their game. LEJ may have the best analysis of where it is heading. I predicted five, maybe six. My guess is five. The Bowman/Yzerman factor will now come into play. Scotty will dissect this game and Yzerman will refuse to lose. But this is going to be a very physical series. In the end that will favor the very disciplined and patient Wings. They will cause the young 'Canes to make mistakes. You saw a bit of that tonight. Watch for Hasek to come out in Velcro padsfrom here on out.

So far, so good. But I must say that these 'Canes even surprise me! What you saw tonight was vintage Wings hockey. They stayed patient, stayed disciplined, found the opening and went for it. Two shots, two goals. Look for a solid rotation and more of the same. As surprised as I am by the 'Canes, look for at least one and maybe both in the Red Wings tally while in Raleigh. I am sticking by the 5 game prediction, no more than six.

WOW!! Now, that was a GAME!! They came within 3 seconds of tying the Stars OT record in the final game in '99. I have to admit, the 'Canes have surprised and amazed. I still think the Wings will take it in 5; but, the series has been outstanding so far, and it would be exciting (to say the least) to have this go to a Game 7.

Well, I'm a happy camper -- even though Dear Hubby, who's backing the 'Canes, is a wee bit grumpy. (hehehe) But, he has to admit that 'Dancin'' Dusak is a great talent -- I just wish the Stars had him.

Anybody want to take bets on next year's Cup finalists? I'm going to be watching the Flyers, now that they have Ken Hitchcock as coach. Oh dear, that means we'll have to break down and pay for the Hockey Channel on satellite -- darn! (not) ;-)

All the best, Áine

Man, what a game last night!!! 3 OTs and almost a 4th. I was on the edge of my seat, I was sweating, I was cheering, I was cursing. These fucking finals are killing me!!! Wings take it 3-2 in the 3rd OT. Irbe was fantastic but Hasek is proving he's better.

Lonesome EJ's predictions are proving to be eeriely accurate: "Wings in six. They lose the first one after taking the Hurricanes too lightly. They take the second now that they're awake. The third is evenly played but the Wings win in overtime. ..."

If he continues right, I'm going to nominate he be burned as a witch.

A fake fortuneteller can be tolerated. But an authentic soothsayer should be shot on sight. Cassandra did not get half the kicking around she deserved.

... or I'm going to kidnap him to give me betting tips. *LOL*

Way to call it EJ! And WOW! What a game last night!!!

Quite a game. I don't see this series being over for a while.

I have to admit that I'm rooting for the Hurricanes, I guess it's the underdog thing. The Red Wings have two of my favourite players in Stevie Y and Shanahan, but I'm still pulling for the 'Canes.

I must admit though, I'm a lifelong Leaf fan. My dad let me stay up and watch the final game in '67. That was their fourth Cup in the sixties. Who could have possibly predicted the slump that they would fall into. At least they are seriously trying to compete again, but the damage that Harold Ballard did takes a long time to recover from.

It went just as I predicted. No surprise there. As I said in the first or second post. Early on folks were underestimating the 'Canes. They played very well, and gave the Wings pause. They beat them the first game. But then the Bowman/Yzerman factor kicks in. Breaks my heart that Scottie is leaving, but I wish him long life, great health, and happiness in his retirement. Now............where the hell is Dallas?

Congratulations to one heck of a team.

It's hard to imagine hockey without Bowman.

So, explain to me how Stevie Y didn't win the Conn Smythe.

And Congratulations to Jim Rutherford, Paul Maurice and the Carolina team. They sure didn't hand the Cup to the Wings.

Detroit deserved it. They showed themselves to be the better team in the semis and the finals, and to my surprise, the games were played cleanly. The Avs will challenge them next year (will Roy be in goal?).

And Dallas...isn't that somewhere near Ft Worth?

Bowman knew how to go out didn't he? A class act and he will be missed!

Now next year I figure the Columbus Blue Jackets to be right in there..........."there" being dead last. But we're good folks here and always lay out the "Welcome Mat" ...which is unfortunately the team.

No, darlin' Mick, it's not "where the hell is Dallas" -- it's where in hell is Dallas! At least July through September. What you all haven't figured out yet is that yes, you can ice skate in hell!! Only in Texas - so there!

Hey 'Spaw,

I taught gaolatending for many years. One of my most successful students is BlueJackets goalie Ron Tugnutt. He started at our goalie school when he was six. I was surprised to see him go to Columbus as a free agent. It reminds of when Gump Worsley was playing goal for the hapless New York Rangers in the early sixties. He was interviewed on national television after a loss. They asked "which team in the NHL give you the most trouble?". Without batting an eye he answered "The Rangers".

You got to figure Catspaw's team would have a goalie called "Tugnutt". What's the Captain's name? Peckerbender?

I'm sure he is, Steve. I just thought I'd get that one in before Pat did.

Free agency had had a huge impact on Hockey just as it has on other major sports. While the notion of team loyalty has been diminished, parity between the teams has become a season to season thing. Last season's cellar-dwellers can trade right and win the cup in the next season. And the Blue Jackets? Well, just look at what Carolina did this year.

LEJ,

Look at what Carolina did this year??? Look at what Detroit did. Hasek, Hull, Robitaille, Duchesne. All pretty good Free agents.

While I of course cheer for my beloved Red Wings and mourn the loss of Scotty Bowman and congratulate Nick Lidstrom on his well-deserved Conn Smythe, I also must praise Carolina.

They are now a better team for having lost to the Wings. They now know what it takes to win a Cup. When the game ended and the confetti flew, the Canes sat there and watched rather in awe. You could see they almost forgot they had just lost. I could hunger in their eyes. They were thinking of how great such a scene would look in Carolina and how great it will be when it is they who get to hoist the Cup before a huge cheering crowd and kiss it.

Paul Maurice will fine-tune his team during the off-season and work on developing his Trap strategy and certain things will be scrapped and new things will be added.

I see now that Carolina will be back. We ain't heard the last of them.
