Can someone guide me to an imaginative arrangement for either Nobody Wants You When You're Down and Out, or Buddy Can You Spare a Dime?

I'm doing a project which involves both, but I just can't find or work out arrangments which excite me.

Help!!!

- Ian B

Ian, try listening to Frank Christian's version of "Buddy". It's a really good fingerstyle arrangement and is worth the effort of working it out. I can't remember the name of the CD it's on (mine's lent out!) but I'm sure a mudcatter will refresh my memory. Good Luck

Probably would help if you would give a better idea of what your problem is--are you looking for more "interesting" chords for the tunes than the regular chord progressions(which would be kind of surprising, because both melodies have rather unusual twists in their chord progressions)--are you having trouble finding the chords themselves(the ones for "Buddy"in Rise Up Singing are not adequate to play the song), or are you having trouble finding a way to play the tunes that holds together? For that matter, what instrumentation are you using? The default assumption would be guitar, but that could be wrong--

Guitar, although I don't care if I finger-pick it or flat-pick it! And yes, it's essentially a chord sequence to back a vocal, not an instrumental solo.

My favourite chord sequence for Nobody, so far, starts off wth the first line as C, Emajor, A7, but then goes on to a second line of Dm/A7/Dm/A7, which just doesn't make sense to me... can't get that to sound right, even if I transpose it into a different key. The guy who sent me that one says it is the Clapton version.

I now have to merge that into a medley with Buddy, for which the nicest (and simplest!) arrangement I've found so far, since starting this thread, is in Aminor -

Am Dm Am Dm E7 Dm Am F7 E7 Am

So really, I'm just angling for any suggested sequences that anyone can guide me to.

Thanks - Ian B

The Clapton version is on OLGA. That second line finishes with another Dm, so the line ends with Dm on "I", A7 on "didn't" and the final Dm on "care".

I think!

Cheers, Terry

The best version of 'Nobody' is Eric Claptons, from the 'Unplugged' album....

No chords, no help, just my opinion.... see if I care!

Just play all the minor chords that you can think of and then you will have the chords of depression.

I like IanB's take on this in the first post. The excitement comes from the clarity and the intensity of the fingerpicking chosen for your particular rendition and your chosen chord structure. Both songs are more complx in chord structure than a typical 3 chord blues---and good picking will definitely enhance the presentation--make it more impactful.

Also------for a different take on both songs, try to work out an arrangement on a jew's harp. I think it'd be fascinating !!! ;-)

Bearing in mind that the singer of both songs is supposed to be penniless, I think that's appropriate!
