More clues? Who sang it? When? What kind of song--i.e., country, pop, etc? Where did you hear it? No luck with Google on what you gave.

This record is out there somewhere. Fifteen(?) years ago it was played repeatedly on a syndicated golden oldies programming carried by WHYM(91) in Hartford CT. Seems to me the lyrics were not "I want matilda back again", but "I want my baby back again"

The following version was done by lots of people, including Jerry Lee Lewis.

Your love for me will always be
Here to stay, so tenderly
Matilda, I'll cry and cry for you
Yes, no matter what you do

Matilda, I've cried and cried for you
And no matter what you do
Yes, I've cried and cried in vain
I want my baby back again

You gave me love when there was none
You know you're the only one
Tears that's in my heart to stay
I want my baby back again

Matilda, I've cried and cried for you
Yes, no matter what you do
Yes, I've cried and cried in vain
I want my baby back again

Matilda, I've cried and cried for you
Yes, no matter what you do
Yes, I've cried and cried in vain
I want my baby back again

You gave me love when there was none
You know you're the only one
Tears that's in my heart to stay
I want my baby back again

My love for you will always be
Just a faded memory
Yes I've cried and cried for you
Yes no matter what you do

You gave me love when there was none
You know your the only one

I want my baby back again

Mathilda I've cried and cried for you
Oh no matter what you do
Yes I've cried and cried in vain
I want my baby back again

Piano Solo

Oh Mathilda I've cried and cried for you
Oh darlin' it don't matter what you do
Yes I've cried and cried in vain
Lord I wan't my baby back again
Come on home baby!

The first time I heard this song was in a country bar in Chicago and it was about 1959. Supposedly the fellow singing the song wrote it. No clue as to his name.I sang the song for years, but never heard a recorded version. Now I've forgotten the lyrics and was directed to here. The lyrics in one post are familiar, but seem clumsy to go with how I remember the song. But thanks to that person as I was able to leave out and change a few words to make it work.
                  Thanks again.......Roy

This song was in fact release by "Cookie", the cowriter of the song, in 1959. I am from Louisiana and listened to Swamp Pop and Cajun Music all my life. In 1975, Donny King, who was my uncle, re-recorded and re-released it. Others have done the same afterwards.

Cookie's version went #47 on billboard POP charts and my uncle's went #20 on Billboard Country Charts. "Donny", his stage name, died in 1980 of cancer. Six months after my Paw Paw died. "Donny" played for Micky Gilley in his house band and then would drive to go see my Paw Paw when he was dying.

If anyone need some more info, let me know and I will do my best.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds version from 1979 is pretty true to the as-written lyrics.
