On this evening's local news, Roger's tv station featured a story about two young Canadian singer/songwriters who are making their way down and across America in an old Dodge cargo van with no money, a few CDs, and a couple of lawn chairs. I think they call themselves "Five Mile High" or maybe it was "Five on High?" I will find out because I plan to go visit them and check out their CD.

Anyway, they are sleeping in their van, in the parking lot of WalMart and when they rolled into town they had $1.25 to their name with no gas, etc. They have a couple of gigs coming up, they don't sound half bad, and they are young, so they are having a good time, BUT when Rog and I were talking about it, he said, "They shouldn't have left home without their Mudcat...then they'd have all kinds of places to stay and food to eat!"

So, I shall do my part as a Mudcat ambassador, as many of you do all of the time, drive over to WallyWorld and buy one of their CDs and take them a printout of the Mudcat Homepage with an invite to come join us sometime. It is good to see young people havingsuch a good time sharing their acoustic music as they go along the way.

kat...we don't take Visa, Mastercard, or American Express, just have yer Mudcat badge or teeshirt handy!

Yes, please, katdarlin, post their schedule. I will make it a point to find them if they are in the area and see if I can offer them a hand.

Not likely that I'll run into them... seeing as there is no Wal-Mart for miles around ... but my good wishes go out to them and a big "HOORAY"!

If they've got the brass to pull a stunt like that in the first place, they deserve all the help we can give them. Please, post thier schedule.

Theer are two Wal-Marts near us here, are they coming as far south as Florida? Will they be stopping only at Wal-Marts? Kat why don't you suggest they stop at a local library with internet access and come to the 'Cat and chat with us? Sounds like and interesting journey for them!

Well, shoot! Good idea, Banj! Unlike you, we only have ONE WallyWorld, which is where I trekked this morning, thinking to m'slef, "Self, they're kids. They probably stayed out late and will sleep in on this fine and coolish morning. No problem finding them, right?!" NOT!!

Couldn't find them. Did find a nice woman from BC with her dog, though! Rog says these guys are from Winnipeg. I suspect they are probably at the community radio station or out site-seeing or somesuch. I do know where they are performing on Friday, so if nothing else, I will drop of some info for them, there, and/or Rog and I may look for them at WalMart this evening.

Thanks, again, you are a generous lot...bet ya'll take home stray critters, too, doncha?**BG**

Please give them my name and address in N.Jersey, if they should get here. Tell them to mention you, Mudcat. Will you please get their names so we can indentify them when the come? Anyone reading this could come by and say they were them.

Welcome!

Love, Annamill

That's true Annamil, but if Kat got their names and posted them then anyone reading this could say thay were them AND use their names. Probably a better way to ID these folk would be to mail something to Kat which YOU could ID as one of a kind, have Kat give it to them and thay could use that as a form of authentication. This could hold true for anyone wanting them to come visit with them. Maybe a letter written by you inviting them would be a good thing to identify the 'real McCoys'.

Hey, I live between two WalMarts (one is exactly 1 mile away, the other 1.7 miles away in the opposite direction -- stereo!!). I don't suppose these folks are coming to southeastern PA, are they?

Um, good point, Banj, but they will be leaving in a day or two, as far as I know.

If it cools down a bit, Rog and I will see if we can find them at WalMart, this evening. I will give them a printout of this thread and if they want to get ahold of any of you, they will have to get all of the info from me, off-line, so not to worry.

If all else fails, I will call them, tomorrow evening, where their gig is, and make arrangements to meet up with them. If it's meant to happen, it will happen. Thanks so much to all of you.

kat

I think the thanks are due more to the kids from Canada, living a life that many of us can only vaguely remember or dream of. What I would give to be carefree enough again to set out on the road with nothing but $1.95 and many unknown miles between me and the next tank of gas or meal. 'Those were the days my friend.....'

Not me, Banj! I did that once and now I think I must've been crazy! Of course I didn't know as much about the world then, so maybe it was naivete..which begs the question..if our consciousness does not expect the negative are we more protected from it? Is that where joie de vivre comes from?**BG**

We missed them last night, so I'll make a couple of phone calls, today. It is too hot and smoky for me to go out, today, but it might blow over by this evening, or I will ask Rog to drop off the print-out at their gig-place during his lunch hour.

*sigh*

Kat -- which fire is causing the smoke there? We have a lot of haze today from the Hayman fire, and a colleague who commutes from Denver (to Boulder) says the smell is strong all over the city, and there's no telling how long it will be that way.

Evidently it's the one in Durango, mostly, Deda. I think also a bit from near Alamosa. We had some yesterday but it was so high up that we couldn't even smell it. I woke to the smell this morning, fairly strong and the sun has been very weak compared to what we've been having. It is so sad and awe-full to look up and know the clouds represent so much loss. It looks as though we'll have some hazy summer.

Susan,
Shouldn't that be:
"Sleeping space here........

 ~Zzzzzzz~   ?"
*G*

There's a Wally World about a mile and a half from my house in Portland [The Rose City], Oregon.  If you find them, and they're coming my way, have 'em PM me.  Can probably find lodging, etc.

Well, I called and left a message for them at their gig last night. Left my name, phone number, and a message that I had musicians lined up who were offering help, but they never called. I couldn't go out because of the smoke last night. Thanks for your offers, anyway. BTW, they call themselves Five Mile High.

Well. Kat, you did all you could. Maybe they felt they didn't want to impose on anyone or maybe they set out to do this on their own and accepting help from anyone is against their gameplan....Whatever their cause, I wish them well and if they do happen to read this somewhere along the line know that many folk wish them luck and stand ready to offer a helping hand if needed!

Thanks, Banj. They are supposed to have a website, but I'll be danged if I could scare one up. If anyone finds it, I will be sure to send them a heads-up. I am sure they have no idea there are a bunch of centre-aged folkies talking about them!*bg*

Gee, that sounds like fun! And I even have my geezerly 1973 mini RV--except of course, I would have to have something A little bigger & more reliable, and I'd have to be able to take ALL my instruments--don't ask, I've never counted!), and of course I'd have to have a good mattress, & of course I could take my portable size washer & dryer if it were big enough, and in order to look good for the performances, it would have to be big enough to have something of an ironing board to press the wrinkles out of all that stupid rayon they sell these days. Then, of course, I'd kinda like to have my kitty's litter box towards the back--but not in the bedroom!--so I don't smell it, and plenty of room for ...come to think of it, I'd have to have one of the big busses like the big acts travel in, which of course I can't afford, cause all my medicine costs so @#$%^!!! much these days it's probably more than the monthly payments on the *&%#@ bus, so I better just FORGET IT!!!!! Good luck to the wandering minstrels, if they come my way I'm up all night anyway (see the "can't sleep" thread)& I'd be happy to have them visit & jam all night!
