Subject: Yet Another Hello There Thread. . . From: NobleSavage Date: 29 Jun 02 - 08:40 PM So, I've been a-lurkin' and a-readin' and a-listenin' and I thought I'd step in an' join you-all. I play roots-type music(mostly English and American, but I'm interested in just about everything else. . . if I hear a tune I like, I figure it out on whatever instrument I play(quite a few?!) that I think it'd sound good on. One of my current fascinations includes expanding the repitore of the one and two-row button accordian--from Tom Waites' songs to Eastern European music(you'd be surprised. . . ) With that, I create the Mudra of Comradly Display and radiate greetings. |

Subject: RE: BS: Yet Another Hello There Thread. . . From: Celtic Soul Date: 29 Jun 02 - 09:27 PM Tom Waites to Eastern Euro? No, I'd have never thunk it, but now that you mention it, I can definitely hear it! Oh! And welcome! Pull up a virtual stool, have a virtual Guinness, and enjoy the mayhem. :D |

Don't worry, there's just a thin veneer of civilization here. Perch on Celtic Soul's virtual stool with her virtual Guinness while we rousseau up some virtual pub grub fer yez. Your greetings radiate benignly, and you are most welcome. |
Subject: RE: BS: Yet Another Hello There Thread. . . From: Escamillo Date: 29 Jun 02 - 11:48 PM Welcome Sir, and just tell me whenever you need anything about roots music from Argentina or South America in general. That doesn't mean that I am a master in musicology but that I live very close to the sources. Un abrazo - Andrés (in the troubled Buenos Aires) |

Subject: RE: BS: Yet Another Hello There Thread. . . From: NobleSavage Date: 30 Jun 02 - 12:39 AM Thanks to all, I appreciate the welcome. Bobert, what I said was basically, "Howdy, mind if I set a spell?" the rest was the vagrant whimsy of a summer afternoon. Yes, scoot over at the table, there--an IPA, though, I'll want to work up to the black stuff. Whatever ya got cookin' there sure smells good, got any corn pone? Sure do like that corn pone. Thanks Andres, I have a two-row button accordian(Hohner) made in Brazil; I often wonder what they play on 'em there--anything you want to tell me about roots music where you are is more than welcome. I wonder what S.A. music sounded like before the Spanish arrived? Esparanto? I wanna see the plant growing from *that* root! must be a sight indeed. Any other box players? NS |
Subject: RE: BS: Yet Another Hello There Thread. . . "We know which instruments they had, how they sounded and how they were used, but not the type of music they played" said Chalón Rodríguez, researcher of the ancient American music, during a conference organized by the Cultural Center of the Inter-american Development Bank. In México, in times of the Conquer, the Spanish clergy introduced lyrics from christian poems to the native music in the process of conversion of the Aztecs, said Rodríguez. But the written pages were lost. A search of "musica precolombina" will lead you to many interesting sites, mainly in Spanish. Un abrazo - Andrés |
Subject: RE: BS: Yet Another Hello There Thread. . . From: NobleSavage Date: 30 Jun 02 - 02:07 AM Thanks, Andres, I kinda expected that, it's the same story in a lot of places. So, what do you play?(assuming that you do) I once took a workshop in Chilean music at a music camp in N. California where I had a lot of fun learning to play charango(rather like the offspring of mandolin and a ukelele) and some kind of big whistle that looked like a bedpost and had a harsh breathy sound. The leaders were a couple and the male half of this couple played lots of other instruments including a set of two whistles designed to be played in pairs with 3 holes on one and(I think) 4 on the other. Anyway, he played 'em both together and a grand sound they made. They were little conical affairs like Clarke whistles. I remember that I really liked the sounds and the feel of the music. The round woody sound and all those thirds was a real breath of fresh air. 'till next time, NS

Subject: RE: BS: Yet Another Hello There Thread. . . From: CarolC Date: 30 Jun 02 - 02:27 AM Box player here!
Good to see another squeezer joining to the forum. There are a few of us here.
I play a 120 bass piano accordion. I mostly play traditional Finnish, English, and Scottish music, and also some recent compositions in the traditional idiom. If you like Eastern European music, I highly recommend traditional Finnish music (you'd be surprised... ) Welcome to the Mudcat NobleSavage. |
Subject: RE: BS: Yet Another Hello There Thread. . . From: Cappuccino Date: 30 Jun 02 - 02:45 AM I rather surprise myself by realising that I've been standing in the corner of this Mudcat room so long, I now have the gall to feel qualified to welcome someone else. How strange... Have a wonderful time on the Cat, mate, from one in Middle England. - Ian B |
Subject: RE: BS: Yet Another Hello There Thread. . . From: Escamillo Date: 30 Jun 02 - 05:44 AM This is becoming something different from "Yet another Hello There thread", that's the way Mudcat works ! Noble, I was a folk and classical guitar student many years ago, but in recent years my activity is singing as a tenor in large symphonic-coral groups at large Opera Houses and chamber groups too. As a soloist I also make a few presentations, where I mainly sing (curiously) Afro-American songs. Once I came to the Mudcat to search for some lyrics of spirituals and got caught by this friendly and knowledgeable people. I'll be glad to search for ancient music if you want, but you know that it would not be pre-colonial. Un abrazo - Andrés

Subject: RE: BS: Yet Another Hello There Thread. . . From: NobleSavage Date: 30 Jun 02 - 11:54 AM My, oh, my how this thread has grown. . .not much time as I've gotta scamper off to a gig, butlet me address the "mudra" thing-- Tacked to the wall in front of me as I sit here is a copy of the Smokey the bear sutra by Gary Snyder; early in the poem, Smokey is depicted as standing with his left paw in the mudra of comradly display--that is to say, open, palm out, indicating generosity and friendlieness. . . if it's good enough for Smokey Bear in his aspect of Great Sun Buddah, it's good enough for me. The curious person will type "Smokey the Bear Sutra" in the search engine of his or her choice, and regard the results. . . . thus we have heard NS

Subject: RE: BS: Yet Another Hello There Thread. . . From: NobleSavage Date: 30 Jun 02 - 07:31 PM Ok, back from gig. Time for thread maintainence, I see. To work. Carol--I don't play piano box, I'm a push'n'pull kinda guy--love to hear 'em well played, tho'--one of my favorite busking buddies plays the PA. I am currently exploring baltic music and, yes, Finnish music is extremly fascinating--I'll definatly be learning me some of those! The more I hear of that Baltic stuff the more I like it. Andres--thanks for the effort, I'm more interested in what people would play before recordings became available--especially at home or at social gatherings--weddings and parties and funerals and busking and so forth. Do everyday people still do that? I would like to think so. A graceful good afternoon to all--I'm reveling in the comradly display I sense here. . . NS |

Subject: RE: BS: Yet Another Hello There Thread. . . From: NobleSavage Date: 01 Jul 02 - 05:16 PM Hi, it's me again. . . hello, evr'body I haven't said hi to yet-- I'm in Berkeley, Ca--capital of mellow and how to get it. Yes, I have a D/G melodeon, also 2 C/G, and various 1-rows--the D/G I find better for playin' outside, like for Morris, etc., the C/G not so strident, also more range--the G row of the D/G becomes quite shrill in the upper register and since the C/G is pitched lower, it doesn't have that problem. I tried a B/C once--was like the box from Mars--everything I knew was wrong. There are some mighty players of those out there, tho'. "The Briar and the Rose" by Mr. Waites sounds very cool play it slowly,(T. Hall style)--lots of sustain--soulful. . .oh, my. G'day back at ya, aussiebloke, and a question: Are any of the field recordings made by John Meredith available to the general public, (like me), ferinstance? A friend loaned me two books of songs and tunes and I was well and truly fascinated by them, but I really want to hear 'em for myself. Lotsa box players--I'm sure I could learn something. Any info profoundly appreciated. English musos, howdy--I also play 1-row in the southern stepdance style--Oscar Woods rules! Love that meat'n'taters dark ale sound that comes from those boxes. Who do you'ns like to listen to? Question for Carol C.--What kind of Finnish music do you like? Ive been listening to the really old stuff--kanteles and jouhikkos and hornpipes, oh my--I hear tell they like tangos up there, too. BTW, Andres, I'm more interested in what people played for themselves before recorded music became popular--and what kinda music(if any) the average person would play if they were so inclined? Thank all of you for your kind attention--I'm really enjoying this. Later NS |
