I've been looking all over Dublin for a CD of Mise Eire, Sean O Riada's stupendous music from the 1960s film about the 1916 Rising.

Not a sign of it in any shop - and one shop-owner foamed at the mouth and said that he was ordering this and other CDs regularly from Gael-Linn and it was impossible.

This is the most important work of Irish music of the 20th century, by the country's premier composer. It's disgraceful that it should be unavailable.

Does anyone know where I can buy a copy of the CD? It's listed on various websites, but having tried a couple, it's the same story with them.

Ed,

Was going to post the URL of the Gael Linn website - but it's bloody well
non-operational at the moment. It's referenced as http://www.gael-linn.ie/
anyway by Google - no guarantee that's not out of date though. Funny they
should be badly distributed - as I seem to remember that Gael Linn ran a
small scale distribution sideline at one time - importing folk/world music stuff.
Now, let's not get onto RTÉ - when it comes to honouring the memory of Ó Riada..
Had you heard about them having erased all but 5 minutes of archive video footage
of programmes involving the man ? Now that IS a national disgrace..

That's awful news about RTE - what idiots.

It seems that any state-financed organisation has a remit of being incompetent idiots, from these stories.

Vinyl - thanks, David, but I don't have a record-player, so it's no use to me.

The erased footage at RTE isn't that unusual a thing to have happen at TV stations, and they aren't idiots at all.

Guest, JTT have you tried working with Finbar Boyle at Claddagh Records?

Have not tried working in Claddagh, why? Would they be able to get a copy?

They're probably your best chance in Dublin - unless Finbar is in a bad mood after spending twenty minutes with some tourist who asks him dozens of questions, then hesitates between two tapes of pub ballads for a further twenty minutes before deciding to buy neither.

Celtic Note used to be the other reliable shop for trad, but with the improved economic situation they can no longer be relied on to employ knowledgeable staff, and they've expanded the U2/cranberries etc. department at the expense of the trad stuff.

Nope, I've tried Claddagh now and they don't have it; nor do Tower, HMV, Golden Disks, the shop in George's Street Arcade or Tower.

I suppose I'll have to cross the river to the northside and try there.

This is bleeding ridiculous.

JTT,
I have a CD copy which a friend of mine gave me, as far as I can make out,
as the result of a Gael-Linn freebie. E-mail me at sealt160n@nospamyahoo.com
(take out the obvious bit) & we'll see how we can get it to ye...

Doesn't Claddagh Records stock Shanachie? I have to say I'm surprised they don't have a copy of it.

Are the films still available on cassette? I saw them as a kid when they came out and relished them. I'd love to see them again as an adult who has read quite a lot more history than I did when at school.

I googled "mise eire" and "dvd" and came up with nothing.

Called in today to An Realta, now rebranded as "Star Bingo", where they just told me Mise Eire was "as clo" (out of print) and that this was a wholesalers and not open to the public.

I'm getting seriously pissed off about an organisation funded by the Irish State letting this seminal work go out of print - they should instead be selling the DVD of the film.

Claddagh may not be able to get the Shanachie release because of international licencing. It seems likely that Mise Eire was only licenced to Shanachie for North America, and that Europe would be covered by Gael-Linn; certainly Eire would be covered by Gael-Linn! if Gael-Linn falls apart, Irish shops might find materials unavailable that are easy to obtain in the US.

MusicScotland.com appears to have it for 13.49 (20 something US).

Gael Linn's website is currently being reconstructed. If the CD truly is unavailable (and I should think it would be worth a phone call to them), you could always ask them why it has gone out of print. Of course, it is always easier to whinge around about a thing, rather than get accurate information about it.

I did ask them; they were vague. Guest, would you mind using your name if you're going to talk about whinging?

Have you some information about why it's out of print, Guest?

I finally joined the 21st century and got a DVD player. Having sated my desire for obscure Chinese and Japanese films, I asked for Mise Éire, and was astounded that (a) the young lad in the video shop had never heard of it, and (b) it isn't availabe on DVD anyway. Bleagh.

Gael-Linn aren't very helpful when you go to them with queries, at least that's been my experience in Dublin.

But look - run out and get Seoltaí Séidte, Gael Linn's double CD re-issue of the 78 rpms issued from 1957-61. Unaccompanied singing and unaccompanied solo instrumentalists. Like it was!

Is it in fact a karaoke thing for guitarists to play along to? Is that what happened in 1957?
