Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: im looking for chords to 'Sarah' From: sian, west wales Date: 20 Aug 02 - 09:27 AM Or it could be the Buddy Whasisname and the Other Fellers song, "Sarah". Don't have it to hand, but the chorus goes:
Sarah, Sarah, won't you come out tonight? Tune seems to be a variation of one I know for Bachgen Bach o Dincar, which we discussed a long time back in Lyr/Chords Req: The Two Musselburgh Songs Click here sian

Subject: Lyr Add: SARAH (trad Newfoundland) From: little john cameron Date: 20 Aug 02 - 11:50 AM SARAH I came upon a charming girl and Sarah was her name. Her parents want a husband with riches, wealth, and fame. I have no wealth, and riches and fame have never come my way Until the day when I crept up and through the keyhole say: CHORUS: "Sarah, Sarah, won't you come out tonight? Sarah, Sarah, the moon is shining bright. Put your cap and jacket on, Tell your mother you won't be long, And I'll be waiting for you 'round the corner." My Sarah is a girl like this, a girl you seldom see. She loves me only for myself and not for my money. Every night at eight o'clock, she puts the needles away, And standing just beside the door and through the keyhole say: CHORUS One night a little after eight, I crept up to her door And I whispered, "Sarah, darling," as I'd often done before. [spoken:] "I'll give you Sarah!" said a voice, as down I fell a-flop, And her mother saying, as she kicked me all around the shop: CHORUS The old woman thought she'd killed me and I let her think so, too. As I lay there on the floor, I scarce knew what to do. At last she said, "Is he live or dead? My girl I'll let him wed." Then up I jumps, says, "Thank you ma'am," and to my girl I said: CHORUS ljc |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: im looking for chords to 'Sarah' From: sian, west wales Date: 20 Aug 02 - 11:55 AM I've got the Buddy one at home somewhere. I'll try to find it. sian |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: im looking for chords to 'Sarah' From: sian, west wales Date: 20 Aug 02 - 04:56 PM This also from "Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers: Songbook 1", (Vinland Music) "Noted as, "Traditional - arranged by Kevin Blackmore, Wayne Chaulk and Ray Johnson" A footnote in the book: "Back in 1954, when I was a lad, I heard my father, the late Johnny Johnson, sing this song. Over the years I memorized it and learned to act out the song just as my father did. I believe that my father learned it from John Joe Kelly, a resident of Job's Cove. He was supposed to have been a fine tenor singer. --- Ray" There were no chords with the arrangement, though. Check the link I gave above to the Musselburgh songs and you'll get the tune, albeit in a 4/4 time - Sarah being in 6/8. Still, you can get the tune in your head ... BTW, do I win a prize for getting the right "Sarah"??? Oh, and we should note that Buddy actually joined Mudcat not so long ago. Can't remember what his 'handle' is, but someone might be able to chase the 'welcome' thread up. sian |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: im looking for chords to 'Sarah' From: sian, west wales Date: 21 Aug 02 - 07:58 AM Thanks for the pat on the head! But it looks like I was mistaken - he 'guested' but doesn't seem to have joined. Maybe someone will let him know that he's being mentioned in dispatches and he'll pop in again (and join)! My BW&OF personal favourite is still, "Peein' in the Snow" though ... sian |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Sarah (trad Newfoundland) From: GUEST,Nick Strickland Date: 23 Sep 09 - 05:29 PM Hey guys, i know i'm a few years late, but i was looking for the chords for this song and came across this, so then i figured if you guys can't find the chords i won't either, so i took a shot at transcribing it, and i only ended up with 3 chords... For the first line you start in Dm then go to C, next line you go C to Dm, the third line you repeat Dm to C, then on teh final line you go to Am then Dm..sounds right, but i'm unsure of the Am...i couldn't find anything else to fit. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Sarah (trad Newfoundland) From: meself Date: 24 Sep 09 - 05:30 PM It's generally sung unaccompanied - but, of course, you may do it howsoever you think fit. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Sarah (trad Newfoundland) From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Mar 10 - 07:50 PM I have a recording of this song by Teresa Doyle. The tune she uses is the tune I know for The Bigler's Crew. I think the tune may be more formally known as Bachgen bach o dincar. Is that the tune usually used with "Sarah"? Seems to be - see the messages from Sian above. Are there any other versions of this song? I'm having trouble getting the words to scan in the versions from the DT and ljc. I can't find this song in the Traditional Ballad Index. -Joe- Click to PlayLyrics and two videos available at GEST. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Sarah (trad Newfoundland) From: meself Date: 11 Mar 10 - 09:16 PM That would be the tune, Joe - but with some variation here and there - some notes held longer, some repeated, some cut out .... The only big difference is in the last lines of each turn, which are much simpler melodically in the song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Sarah (trad Newfoundland) From: meself Date: 11 Mar 10 - 09:29 PM Here's the recording that popularized the song: Ray Johnson . |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Sarah (trad Newfoundland) From: GUEST Date: 19 Aug 21 - 04:24 PM I remember my grandparents in the 90s singing something similar to me “Sarah, Sarah, ain’t you coming out tonight? Sarah, Sarah, underneath the pale moonlight When we kiss and cuddle on your old back porch Tell your little brother not to shine his torch Sarah, Sarah, ain’t you coming out tonight? |
