Thread resurrection again...John Dipper and I are still working on things when we can and have a couple of projects simmering on the back burner. Ralph is right that John spends much of his time in Canada and my work commitments keep me pinned down much of the time...but look out for us...we are still trying to get things together and may yet emerge.
Look out for John's show with Luke Daniels this autumn (2011) it's called Sun Stations.
best wishes to you all
James

Being intrigued, I had a listen ... 1 hour 52 minutes in to be specific Pavane, and it definitely was a Ralphie that was mentioned.

Ralphie, re Wogan, I don't remember, it just sort of flashed past, I wasn't paying atention to the program. I am sure he mentioned a Ralphie, but could have been anyone. Must have been near the end of the show.

John Dipper said on a visit back from Canada a few months ago for a concert with Methera and KerrFaganHarbron that a new Methera recording was in preparation.

Yes, It's a bit of a bummer!
I sometimes think, why do we bother to record anything at all?
Maybe I should just sit in my back yard and play for myself.....discuss!

Cash is one of those funny things, especially with record companies. Since no-one wanted to put our CD out some 18 years ago, after the agreed on outfit decided to drop out of the market, we (legally, I) launched our own label. Now I owe royalties to my partner, myself, a couple of other people, and have to work out how I can keep track of download sales to work out what is due. But of course - we doing basically trad Brit music in the US - there's not that much money coming in, and not much in the yellow envelope that substitutes for my accounting system. Ralphie, I hope you have a more efficient company.

Whoops - sorry Ralphie. I hadn't realised that this wasn't officially sanctioned since it was coming through what I assumed was a reputable source. I was assuming that it would have been put up by Wildgoose with agreement from yourselves , and that you would be getting some income from any sales. Had I known that wasn't the case, I wouldn't have splurged it all over the airwaves (so to speak). My apologies :-(

Basically me, playing with myself. (!)
The E Mail address above, from all those years ago, is still viable.
So, If you Love Duet Concertinas, this is for you...

I never thought I would resurrect a three year dead thread, but since in the past few years several people have mentioned this CD, and expressed a wish to get hold of a copy, I thought it might be worth mentioning that it is now available as an MP3 download on both Amazon UK (at £6.99)and iTunes (at £7.99). If you haven't heard it it comes highly recommended ... reached number 9 in the Mike Harding charts at the time. I managed to buy what was probably the last physical copy out there available on the street about 18 months ago(the vendor didn't realise that it had been deleted from the Wildgoose Catalogue at the time, and was talking about re-ordering). Having played it many times, I can personally recommend it (and, I hasten to add, that is not influenced by any degree of bias. I went to see PJD perform when the CD was released and kicked myself every afterwards for not purchasing a copy of it at the time.)
Public service announcement over!! :-)

It's a bit quiet on the PJD front at the moment.

John D is all over the place with various musical outfits (English Acoustic Collective, etc)
And I've been concentrating on the new "Old Fogies" dance band Housewives' Choice...
But, hopefully something might get moving in the autumn.
we've got half a dozen or so ideas in the pipeline, so, you never know!
Thanks for remembering us

I've had more time to listen to this and get to recognise some of the songs and I have to say I LOVE The Father's Song, even though it is so bittersweet. It is just beautiful. Likewise, one of my favs is Manchester Rambler, BUT I really enjoy all of them very much. Maybe Nothing Spoken is incredibly evocative.

One of the things I really appreciate is the arrangements. Raised, as I was, with classical music to folk, with my brother the classical composer teaching me to hear each part and really listen to the way music is put together, I really am impressed with how lyrical the arrangements are. I can *hear* the Slow Train, yet it is not some garish and blatant fiddle-saw like the old Orange Blossom Special; rather a subtle, soft impression which brings a wisp of a smile to my lips, remembering all of the trains I've been on and how much I loved them, slow and faster.

The M1 Waltz, I can hear the traffic, feel the curves of the road. Likewise with the other songs. The singing is first-rate and the lyrics help, of course, but it is also the very skillful playing, etc. which really makes this a superb collection.

Thanks, again! This one's going to played again, and again, and again, and...

kat

I was lucky enough to have seen Silas (Ralph & James) perform on one of my infrequent trips back to the homeland. Way back in the 70s - I was visiting Steve Dickinson (the "other" concertina man) and he said: Hey, let's go to a folk club. They were really good back then. The fiddle adds a glue to that sound that really solidifies it and fills it out nicely.

In the US the CD is carried by Andy's Front Hall, 518-765-4193 (http://www.andysfronthall.com/) . I'm sure Dick at Camsco would be delighted to sell you a copy also. Sorry I can't help with sound samples - the record company's website (Wild Goose) doesn't provide any.

Alright Kitty (said he crawling out from under his duvet!)
All the above is factually correct, as far as it goes.
To fill in the gaps. James and I met in the early seventies in London.
He's got to be one of the finest singers that I've ever met.But due to having two beautiful daughters he went on "Gardening Leave" from the mid 80's until the late 90's. We stayed in touch though, and every year was going to be...THE YEAR !! Ha !
And then in 2000 I met John at Whitby...and that was that.
(BTW, John's dad Colin, is one of the two finest Concertina makers in the world IMHO.)
Not sure how to get multiple copies across the pond...ADA are distributing in the UK...or just contact Doug and Sue at Wildgoose..(Link further up the page)
But, thanks for the comments everyone. It's not often I can play back my own stuff, but.....It's on the Hi Fi (again) even as I speak!
See you all around on the New Improved Whiter than White Mudcat..
Cheers Ralphie.
Now, how to I translate this into Mandarin??!

The Jordan is Mudcat's Ralphie, multi-instrumentalist who performed with James Patterson and Mick Ryan in Crows (and who is also the third Fraser sister with Fi and Jo/Freya). Ralph came across John Dipper (a very talented young fiddle and concertina player, whose father Colin and uncle Drew were resident performers at Herga Folk Club many years ago)at Whitby Folk week a couple of years ago, and persuaded James that they should form a trio. They were booked at Sidmouth festival the next year. It's a very nice CD. I expect Ralphie will fill in the rest of the story and provide info on how to hear them (this is not the time for modesty, Ralphie....)
