Subject: RE: Help: Home on the range: composer please From: GUEST,Arjay Date: 27 Sep 02 - 01:30 PM Higley may have formally published his poem in 1871, but he wrote it about 1859. See the threads mentioned above for much more elaboration on the history of this song and for links to other sites that detail the song's history. |
Subject: RE: Help: Home on the range: composer please From: GUEST Date: 27 Sep 02 - 04:16 PM The threads posted above show that the words were published first in 1873 in the Pioneer, but the earliest preserved is the Kirwin Chief of 1876. Links in the threads to the University of Kansas site show that Higley married his fourth wife in Illinois in 1866 and took to drink, apparently coming to Kansas in 1870-1871. He probably wrote the poem at that time. There is no concrete evidence of an earlier date. |
Subject: RE: Help: Home on the range: composer please From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 28 Sep 02 - 01:14 AM Mr. Happy, There IS such a thing as "stupid questions" and you ask a lot of them.
The tools are at your immediate disposal, use them, please.
You are much too accomplished, to be calling out, "Mommy, I need help."

Subject: RE: Help: Home on the range: composer please From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 28 Sep 02 - 07:33 AM Actually, Mr. Happy. The only STUPID question is the one which isn't asked. Gargoyle, he probably had not realized this question's been asked before. |
Subject: RE: Help: Home on the range: composer please From: M.Ted Date: 28 Sep 02 - 01:34 PM Gargoyle is a GUEST, George, and anyone could post using that name--He uses his unique style of acid vehemence just so we know it is really him--that aside, his point has merit--

Subject: RE: Help: Home on the range: composer please From: GUEST Date: 28 Sep 02 - 02:29 PM I put Home on the range into search and forum and timed out twice. The filter (whose use should be explained near the filter box) is not understood by many mudcatters. It turned up one of two main threads. It takes some experience to use either one fully. I'm with George on this. The query often turns up information not in the DT. |

Subject: RE: Help: Home on the range: composer please From: Genie Date: 30 Sep 02 - 10:19 PM I stand corrected. I could have sworn that some of the sites linked to above, and Fulghum's anecdotes, gave an earlier date for Brewster's writing of the original "Western Home" poem. But checking these various sites, I see that the 1872 date has got to be about right. Higley was not even born until 1811, and he went to Kansas after the death of his third wife, and it was finding solace on the plains there that prompted him to write the poem. Check out these links for more information: Classic Cowboy Poetry U. Subject: RE: Help: Home on the range: composer please From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 01 Oct 02 - 04:50 AM I had a look in my Country fake book and Home On The Range is given as traditional, with publishing owned by Dorsey Brothers Music. I then checked all the other Trad songs in there, and they all attribute the publishing rights to Dorsey Bros. And by a bizarre coincidence, the book's publishers have the same address as Dorsey Bros Music! BJ |
