Subject: 'wondering Alice' is not me From: Alice Date: 10 Oct 02 - 12:07 PM I just clicked into a thread in which a "GUEST Wondering Alice" posted a message leading to people referring to what "Alice" wrote. I just want to make it clear that GUEST Wondering Alice is not me. I know that the ability for GUEST posters has opened the door for confusion regarding who is writing what on the Mudcat. I think it is important to maintain cookie-less guest access, even though it leads to confusion. Since the thread disappeared before I could post to it, my only recourse in setting the record straight was to start this thread. Is there some way we can have a method for people to clear up confusion over Guests posting using member names? I know this has probably been hashed over before, but maybe it needs to be resovled. I don't know if a permathread for discussing postings by imposters or similar named guests is the solution. Alice |
Subject: RE: 'wondering Alice' is not me From: wysiwyg Date: 10 Oct 02 - 12:34 PM You can use this FORUM SEARCH METHOD to find the post that concerned you. If you enter your name, you will also find posts by anyone posting as a guest using that name on its own or as part of a longer name. Any of us can do that anytime. This doesn't actually happen very often. The simplest way to clear it up is just to post under your cookie'd name if you spot a confusing post or reply, and indicate that you did or did not make a post in question. I've had several occasions where a Mudpal has PMed me asking if I had made a certain post, and it's easy enough to clear up when it occurs. People have been pretty smart at knowing when something has been said that varies a lot from what they might have expected a well-known member to say or how they write. I've seen, from time to time, posts like "Uh, folks, I don't think that was our Mudcat member XXX posting there..." If someone addressed a reply to "Alice" it was probably not directed at you. People often abbreviate the name of the person they are addressing if it's a long one, or create a nickname. I haven't reviewed the post in question, but "Wondering Alice" was probably just a visiting guest named Alice who was wondering about something. I doubt it had anything to do with you at all. It's stickier when a new member arrives who chooses a name similar to your own. Many people here have nicknamed me as Sooz, so when a new member came along and chose that as her Mudcat name, there were PM's exchanged discussing if it made sense to choose another name. We ended up leaaving it as it was and I just let people know, anytime it came up, that we were two different people. If you were to find a pervasive pattern of this surrounding your posting identity, or if a particular post was designed to harass, what you would do (as I understand it) is send a PM to Pene Azul or Joe Offer, who would remove or modify the post appropriately. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: 'wondering Alice' is not me From: toadfrog Date: 10 Oct 02 - 12:40 PM Alice, the thread did not vanish, it is right here. I think, if one is concerned about not being confused with someone else, the secret is not to use a such a common name on Mudcat. There are so many Alices, that it seems to me there is nothing sinister in a GUEST using that name. Now, a really unusual name, like "Gargoyle" - you have to wonder about GUESTS who use that. |
Subject: RE: 'wondering Alice' is not me From: Alice Date: 10 Oct 02 - 12:43 PM Couldn't find it, even though I used the filter for the last two weeks. Thanks toad. I've been on the Mudcat for as Alice since 1997and people know me as the main Alice posting here (if you search member names you'll see that). |

Subject: RE: 'wondering Alice' is not me From: Nerd Date: 10 Oct 02 - 05:09 PM Yes, in Britain "traveller" is correct, and since these groups originate in Britain and Ireland, they are called "Travellers." But anyone can be excused for writing "traveler," just as we might refer to Christy Moore singing "Black is the Color," even though when he sings it it's "Colour..." |
Subject: RE: 'wondering Alice' is not me From: GUEST,Wondering Alice Date: 10 Oct 02 - 05:41 PM Alice, I'm sorry if you thought that I was trying to impersonate you. That is certainly not the case. My real name is Alice Robertson. |
