Subject: Obit: Little John Cameron
From: Jeri
Date: 11 Oct 02 - 10:10 AM

I don't want to start this thread, but I think it needs to be started and no one else wants to do it either. We don't want him to be gone.
I enjoyed his scrappiness and the poetry and humor 'weeyin' brought to this place.

I think ljc posted his own farewell message here in July:

Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I and you are you
whatever we were to each other
that we still are
call me by my old familiar name
speak to me in the easy way
which you always used
put no difference in your tone
wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together
pray smile, think of me, pray for me
Let my name be ever the household word
that it always was
Let it be spoken without effort
without the trace of a shadow in it
Life means all that it ever meant
it is the same as it ever was
there is unbroken continuity
why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you
somewhere very near
just around the corner
All is well

Henry Scott Holland

I came across a lovely piece on a funeral service sheet written for a young friend of mine some time ago.

He has taken his big candle and gone away.
We can't see the light any more
but we know it is still there
Shining in another room.

I never knew John personaly but his rays of light in the often gloomy postings will certainly be missed.

Cheers

Farewell Johnnie Barr. Little John Cameron appeared to be a stage name, and he would hint (with a wink) at a wild and crazy upbringing across the pond....said he HAD to change his name, ha ha!

Yep, we had some fine and funny times, and I'm glad we met again on Mudcat after so many years. In a few days perhaps I'll start a thread about some of John's adventures while he lived in Toronto. Things like "The haunted rooming house", "The Electric Landlady", "The revenge of the Montreal music fan", and of course "Big Kay, and the reluctant job-hunter"..........yup, he drew a bad hand this time, just as I almost did earlier this summer. Many thoughts about John whirling around at the moment, but he met my absolute main criteria for leaving a mark on this world...he was ORIGINAL, and he could laugh at himself!

Cheers John

Rick

With all this gentle memorializing I was wondering when it would occur to some of his afficianadoes here to cut & paste
some of their favorite posts of this well-remembered soul
so that others can may enjoy what made him so memorableand so dear to y'all.

Just quote the passages of the humor & poetry of the man from whence he was among you and let his own "best" words continue to breathe life into his signature character.

I'll quote a line from dearly missed master artist Jimhensen's favorite filmwork,"The Dark Crystal" in defining what written words are: " Writing is words that stay".

I leave you with this gentle suggestion.

I did post something he'd sent me, in one of the other threads, about taking a nap during some flaming nonsense, as he called it. I know there are other favourite sayings which I will find, later, but this one was also rather significant, imo, from the PM's he and I exchanged in talking about life:

Yere richt on aboot the past lives. Ah hope this is mah last ane as a think the place is gaun doon the tubes.

Fruitless and chance gift, my breath,
Why were you given to me,
And why were you condemned to death
By inscrutable destiny?
Who fashioned brain and eye and limb
From nothingness, and gave
My spirit an immortal dream
And knowledge of the grave?
I weep because the only sound
Is life's monotonous,
Sad, aimless, endless lull, the ground-
Swell of the universe.
~Alexander Pushkin

If you know not how to die, never trouble yourself; Nature will in a moment fully and sufficiently instruct you; she will exactly do that business for you; take you no care for it. ~Montaigne

Bodily offspring I do not leave, but mental offspring I do. Well, my books do not have to be sent to school and college and then insist on going into the Church or take to drinking or marry their mother's maid. ~Samuel Butler

But if you come, perhaps you will fill my mind only with new visions; not with yourself but with your lustres, and I shall not be able any more than now to converse with you. So I will owe to my friends this evanescent intercourse. I will receive from them not what they have, but what they are. They shall give me that which properly they cannot give me, but which emanates from them. But they shall not hold me by any relations less subtle and pure. We will meet as though we met not, and part as though we parted not. ~RW Emerson

Couldn't we get the magic translation machine to give us a Scots option? And then when we were missing him we could put the posts through it and read them the way John might have written them.

An example of Little John's artistry with the Scots tongue went far beyond the biting comment, as is shown by this poem, which he posted back in April:

The Bogle.

Coorie doon mah bairnies, lie up agin the wa, An' ah'll come in an' tell ye aboot the Bogle that ah saw.
Ah'm no' scairt o' Bogles, they dinnae frichten me, If he comes haundy tae me,ah'll punch him in the ee'.

Aye,ye're a richt wee holy terror, bit ah'm no' as brave as that,
He wis creepin ower the auld stane dyke,as quiet as a cat.
He thocht ah didnae see him for ah wis mair than fu'
bit ah smelled the awfy reek o' him as it trauchled doon his broo.

Ah tried tae turn an' rin awa,bit mah legs were frozen fast,
Mah blood ran cauld,ah couldnae move ,ah thocht ah'd breathed mah last.
His voice rang oot like a strangled dug,An' his airms were closin in,
Ah,ve got ye noo ye drunken loon,he said wi' a ghastly grin.

The past,it flashed afore mah e'en,every pint that passed mah lips,
even a braw wee single malt ah kept for special nips.
Ah'll gie it up ah cried oot lood, nae mair booze for me,
The Bogle said ye've bairnies twa,so ane mair chance ah'll gie ye.

Ah'll be waitin at the pub at nicht tae see if ye are there,
so ye better keep yer word tae me an' no' drink oney mair.
There's plenty ither loons tae grab, the world is fu' o' boozers
Gie up the drink an' then mak sure ye're no' amang the losers.

So aff he went back ower the dyke, laughin tae himsel'
Ah sobered up an' came richt hame mah story for tae tell
The Bogle gied me ane mair chance, fae noo oan ah'll be wary,
For booze an' Bogles dinnae mix,it's faur too bloody scary.

You can still tip a few over at John's Scottish ex-pat Blether Bar and Grill; it hasn't really been up since '01, but there are some fine postings there and his initial opening about it.

It's good to think ljc doesn't have to suffer any more, and it's good to have known him as a Mudcatter, if not in 'real life'. My sympathy to all his friends and family.

What's the life of a man any more than a leaf
Man has his seasons so why should he grieve
Though all through this life we appear fine and gay
Like a leaf we must wither and soon fade away

Still my favourite song for these sad occasions.

Johhnie's Scots patter was great fun, but keep an eye out for his album "Sit Down Mr. Music Man" on Boot records. It's out of print but turns up all the time in used record stores. Two other Mudcatters, Rick Fielding and Glen Reid were also on Boot Records. It was THE Canadian label for a while, and featured Liona Boyd the classical guitarist as well.

Happy trails Johnnie.

First time I ever met Wee John was in 1968 in Rick Fieldings living room when he lived on Admiral Rd. in Toronto. He was singing a song I heard for the very first time "Ramblin' Boy" by Tom Paxton.
The last verse of the song seems almost prophetic in hindsight.

"He left us here to ramble on.
My wanderin' pal is dead and gone.
If when we die we go somewhere.
I'll bet you a dollar, he's ramblin' there"

Go in peace, old friend,

This was penned earlier this year... it seems appropriate.

We gather here together, friends both old and new,
To share our songs and laughter, tell a stirring tale or two.
But time is rolling onwards, and the toll it takes is dear;
And every year there's one less voice, who will it be next year?

When first we met in company, when none the other knew,
We shared our songs and laughter, and friendships bloomed and grew.
In harmony and unison, our voices blended clear;
But every year there's one less voice, who will it be next year?

The songs we sang were old ones, songs of peace and war,
Of sailing ships and lovers' arms, the miners' life and more.
But all of them in common, were pleasing to the ear;
But every year there's one less voice, who will it be next year?

So raise your voices up boys, in memory of those now gone.
Give thanks for those who gather to carry on the song,
And keep it ringing out now, keep singing through the tears,
So every year there's one more voice, who will it be next year?

Tune: The Rose of York (My name it is McBrennan)
Sat 24 Aug 2002, for Fliss, Rod, Dave, Wally, Tony and all the others.
They aren't here but they know who they are.

Tweed, thanks. First time I've heard him.

Seamus, I don't know that he thought he was leaving when he posted that poem. I don't have any idea if he got so sick all of a sudden or had been fighting it for a long time and just didn't want to deal with how folks would treat him. It seemed to me he was saying, in that message and that thread, just a little bit more than his opinion on "what happens when you die." He posted the poem without comment and when others discussed and argued, he let the poem stand on it's own.

The poem isn't primarily about what happens after death. It's the words of a dying man reassuring and comforting those left behind. So maybe he knew and maybe he hoped we'd find it again after he was gone. Maybe he didn't, but it's still a fine 'goodbye'.

See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world
The breath from your own lips, the touch of fingertips

Didn't you think you were worth anything
See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world

today is april ..2007. People...no one in Johns family knew of this websites existence until two days ago. I was led to it today by an email from Johns daughter. You see...she knew too look for weeyin.
I found this tonight..As I write to you all i will say..I have looked over many conversations...and had many a chuckle with all of you. I knew John well too. His wife was overwhelmed by how many of you called her and sent her cards but she never knew how to respond to you. She doesnt use a computer and until two days ago..none of us knew about this website. I will be sure to hook up my printer and print off all of your messages if she wants me to. I will ask her. I have tears streaming down my face. You all loved him as much as all of us...THAT is so obvious in the readings. thank you so much for your shared memories via this website. I miss him so much as I am sure do all of you. Thank you so much for all of this. John will forever be remembered through the words of all of you ...his friends.
I promise to talk to his widow and ask her if she wishes to have a copy of all of this. After all this time I am sure you would all understand if she found it too hard. I have found it to be very very emotional but so very touching and wonderful at the same time. I was at his funeral service. I am not sure if any of you know any of the details. If you wish to know I would be more than willing to tell you. It was beautiful. So John. It was what he wanted. rocksbyjo@yahoo.ca. Well..I am crying my eyes out...but it is a good cry...you have all made me feel wonderful love and friendship ..
Wow you guys....I have to tell you..this has been very powerful...it is 2007!!!...THis many years later and John reaches out to me? I have been searching and searching for a fabulous webcam site for Loch ness and have never been able to find one..and tonight thru one of johns messages...that he left for a friend...lo and behold....tonight...April 2007...Johnny reached out and showed me the website and even the link to his song online...
People..i am amazed...but hell...anyone who knew John knew ..that was John...amazing

I hope i dont upset any of you by this being so many years later...but I do have to say..this has been a wonderful find. We thought he was fading into obscurity because no online details came up on a websearch for Little Johnny Cameron. Until one added "weeyin" ...here was nothing...and then ...voila...one finds you.

My husband and I are putting one of his albums to CD.
Email us if you wish any other contacts or information.

Thank you...and wow...this is amazing.

Sincerely

Hi Jo-Anne.....I bet he's happy too that you found us. We were just talking in another thread this AM about 'Catters no longer with us and of course John came up right away. He and I shared a lot of varied interests not always common to the general "folkie" (whatever that is.....Is there one?......anyway)........Not long before he was hospitalized last he and I talked at length about a motorcycle he was thinking about acquiring.

Like many around the 'Cat we both loved writing and we had each surrounded our writings with a cast of characters based in reality but no one specifically. As Scots settled much of Appalachia and my characters were good ol' boys who had slipped through the crack in the American Dream, he thought there would be much humor in this clan from BOTH sides of the Atlantic, meeting after all these years and seeing where things led. It could have been hilarious and I will always regret we didn't get into some of it right away.

Thanks so much for coming by and sharing with us. Come back anytime just for yourself and enjoy the 'Cat as John did. We'd love to have you.

Spaw

Jo-Anne, one of the things that I do when one passes is to see if their voice goes on. It is the way that I know that folks haven't really left us, that they are with us in a real way. How sad it would be to know that when one breathes his/her last breath, all that they were and all that they did, died with them. The other side of that is the joy, just as you have shown us, when one realizes that their loved one lives on in the hearts of others. Little John is one of our most beloved members, and the years have not dimmed the memory of him. Rick Fielding was the friend of many here, and some of us spent considerable time with him. He used to talk of the Irish band he and John played in. He would joke about the Arran sweaters, and effecting phony Irish accents. He thought the world of John. And now the two of them are playing music together (told ya, Rick!!!).

God be good to the both of them.

Coincidentally, John's daughter, Katy, wrote to me early this morning to correct a transcription error in one of her dad's songs which was archived at GEST Songs of Newfoundland and Labrador prior to my taking the site over from Frank White in 2002.

Whoever contributed the lyrics transcribed "shingling sand" instead of "shingle and sand" as Johnny had written it. When I wrote back to confirm the correction, I told Katy I also added a definition of 'shingle' in a footnote for any future visitors, so there would be no future misunderstanding.

Then, tonight, I check in at the Mudcat and find all these additions to a five year old thread all about the man who, as can be easily seen from his song, was a most excellent songwriter.

I salute Little Johnny Cameron, a man I never knew, in the same spirit as he shared in his Tribute To Newfoundland.

Thank you to all of your for your reponses. I have received emails from some members requesting a copy of the CD when it is done. Anyone else is free to indicate an interest at rocksbyjo@yahoo.ca. It is so exciting to speak with all of you..John spoke of all of you often..and yes..he was even honest and spoke of how sometimes he got himself into "hot water"... It was so nice to reconnect with him and to meet all of you. Thank you for your generosity and welcome..thank you so much for the information and the links to the photos and everything...I cannot tell you how delighted my husband was this morning when I was able to play Tribute to Newfoundland for him on CD. He misses Johnny very much. He explored the website with me this morning and shed a few tears but also had a lot of chuckles and good old Newfie belly laughs with all of you..Johnny used to ride with my husband on the harley..he so loved to go for a ride...drop into the pub with the helmet in hand...knowing all the women and men were checking out the "bikers" who just walked in...cant ya just picture it..lol..
thank you...all of you..for keeping him alive by memory and love and friendship. I look forward to getting his music on CD so we can all share his wonderful voice once again. ((not to mention generating some air time and royalties for his wife..lol))...I already have interested radio stations who wish to purchase the CD upon completion. This was Johns dream. We asked his wife if we could make his dream come true so that all of us out there who love John so much can keep him just a little bit closer. I look forward chatting with many of you. Katy (Johns daughter) is the one who directed me to this site...it is thanks to her that I was able to make my husbands dream of hearing John on CD a reality on April 04..his birthday is April 05!!!He misses the ole bugger too!!!lol
I will shaddup now..sorry for being so long winded...and yes...I do agree...that it is a bit odd to be stirring him up after all this time...kind of like makes me feel like he wanted us to all meet???Now I will REALLY shaddup.
Talk soon

OH..on another note..I was speaking with Mrs Barr..and she was very touched by what I had to tell her and was very pleased I was able to get Tribute to Newfoundland on CD. She asked me to say thank you. She feels it would be too emotional to read all of this now after all this time..and I think each and every one of us will understand this. She remembers well how so many of you phoned her and extended your sympathies as many of you knew she didnt use a computer..and some of you phoned whether yu knew or not...you all know what I mean. but she wanted me to pass on her thanks.

I love the little serendipities of life. I often think of Little John when I'm immersed in the Cat and literally just the other day Jacqui C started a thread where, of course, ljc's name and persona came up and was dwelt upon. And now here he is back. I sometimes wonder if - and suspect it is true - those we have 'lost' are just out of sight somewhere enjoying us hugely.

Ebbie...I always imagine him harrassing the mermaids...or off to Italy to have coffee...and watching over all of us...having a huge amount of enjoyment....
so maybe ya arent far wrong...lol

Ps...I have always felt the serendipities in life are life's way of having a laugh at our expense...lol

If you listen to his song Tribute to Newfoundland found on mudcat guitar ..u might feel you do just a little bit. John wrote that song ...and if any of you are wondering why he sings of Ireland instead of Scotland as he was a scotsman.......he said...Scotland didnt rhyme!!!..LOL

Many of us still remember LJC with great fondness. It was like talking to Oor Wullie himself at times, something I always delighted in.
RIP
