I had the best time workshop singing with Roger & Ken & then Ken again. George, Mary & Ken's Kipling workshop was to die for, the only one I I think I was able to catch all of. I think they got Dani hooked for life on both Kipling & Bellamy. For me it the was the night sings that are always tops. I can't remember a lot of Fri evening aside from lots of good singing & some great country stuff & some oldies to boot & then it was 4:30 in the morn. Saturday's cabin evening sing was as much a treat as any espically Morticia's "Me Husband's Got no Porridge in Him" her subtle lead in was a gas & Allen C's power house song, can't remember what it was now but it was great. Had only 2 regrets, it seems that I missed out on Janice Cole's singing of "Rubber Ducky" (Rita- it was only a couple yrs ago). Never before or since have I heard someone sing something so funny that it cause a respitory condition. Last time I heard her I fell off a table laughing so hard & had an asthma attack but it was worth every gasp & it seems that I also missed Kendall's "5$ For Whinning" a maybe second to country music's "You Don't Have To Call Me Darling". Throat or no he's well loved, could be he look's older than must. It was extremly nice to chat with Susan at the Camsco booth, love that woman's taste in music (not sure about her taste in banjo players though). Can't believe Tinker has my scars on tape for veiwing, I'll have to by them all now just to keep them out of cirulation. Would've much rather have heard you singing than filming my new body parts. You sound a hell've lot better than I look espically from that veiw & from that angle. Singing with the older Big Mick is always a blast, sorry for wisking away like that, my ETA was 3:30am & I had to get up for work by 5:30, figured if I didn't go strait away while I was planning/thinking I'd be very, very late for work, so double hugs the next time. It's always so hard to leave that if I didn't just go I'd be a gonna. Seeing & hearing Ferrara, as always, is a special pleasure for me, likewise seeing Dave Diamond & getting him to sing the parody he wrote to the "Hog Eye Man", "The Lifeboat Man" is quite the tickle. There's far more that I'm missing here but all of us probaly have enough to fill a book with. only 51 weeks to go, see ya all then. You all have a lovely year. Barry |

Mudcatter of prodigious talent and with the damn sweetest voice you can imagine!! Also Janie's sister, if that's any claim to fame. I'm proud to be joined at the hip with some such as these, and SO proud to know all of you, and overjoyed to have sung with you all. I still feel like Charlie Baum looked ALL weekend. I still have this silly grin everytime I think of EVERY song that was sung. But my favorite memory of every Getaway I've been to is when I find myself wandering between workshops, and hear snippets of all kinds of music wafting out the windows and doorways of every building I pass. It's pure magic... all of it. Dani |

There is never enough time to get the things done that you have to get done let alone time to just relax and do nothing. We all know the importance of relaxation to mental well being, but it is just so hard to work it in! Hence the need for LFPS....We can do it for you!
Why not go out and buy yourself a new boat? We'll be glad to take it out on any number of lakes and rivers for you. We can ski, swim, fish, and just cruise for days on end while you can continue to do all the work that you need to get done! Just think of it! You can work 16 hour days, seven days a week and still get the rest and relaxation you need. |

I knew who you were from your wedding pictures that were posted on Mudcat. I should have said hello, but I guess I have too much of that mid-Atlantic reserve and was waiting for the right opportunity. Charmion and I did get to talk to JtS though. I will be sure to say hello at the next music event we both attend. It was wonderful meeting everybody and putting faces to the names I knew through the Mudcat. There were so many highlights: - the singing of Ken and Dan Schatz - hearing Me and My Uncle from Lucy Goldberg. That one is definitely going into my songbook - singing with Morticia and Charmion at our workshop and learning obscure Spanish-American war lyrics from Dick Greenhaus - having the bass singer from the Missing Person Soupkitchen Gospel quartet take the trouble to explain singing bass harmony to me I hope I get to see some of you again at Old Songs. I've been to a lot of Getaways, and sometimes the weather or the facilities or something else is less than perfect, but we ALWAYS have a fine time. To me, the music doesn't really become secondary -- after all, it's what brings us together in the first place -- but the people become equally important. Some of my dearest friends are people I see one weekend a year. It really is a musical extended family. Sorry folks had so many car problems. Like Willie-O, I feel almost guilty. My only problem was that Ken and I took so long saying goodbye and hugging everyone (though Kendall snuck out before I could catch him -- watch out next time, Kendall...), that Ken missed his train and had to wait an hour for the next one. Wish I'd had more of a chance to talk to Morticia. Well, maybe next time. You WILL come back, won't you, Morty? As for those dreams of having an audience sing along, you've come to the right place. I was remarking to someone after the Sunday concert that FSGW is well-known for singing along. "Ma Schneyer used to beat us," said Dick Rodgers. And it's true, you know. We learned from the best. Of course it was extra special for me this year because both Ken and Dan were there. "Some kids turn out good no matter what you do to 'em," said Kendall. Thanks for the pix, Max! When are we gonna get yours, Bill? By the way, notice that fancy sweatshirt Rick's wearing, with the classy LFPS logo? From: momnopp Date: 24 Oct 02 - 10:53 PM For me one of the highlights was Friday night, as people streamed in, all the hugging and grinning and greeting and hugging and smiling and playing and reconnecting and hugging...we have got to be some of the hugging-est people on the planet, which is pure manna as far as I'm concerned. The energy on Friday night felt somehow electrified -- perhaps it was just me projecting my utter joy at being there. Even though I haven't hung out here [Mudcat] much in the past year, I was tickled to meet the likes of Homeless (who I probably could have talked to for a couple more hours if standing up weren't so hard at 3:00 a.m.) and Morticia and Willie-O. And I just GOTTA ask -- are there ANY Mudcat women who do NOT have a crush on Big Mick??????? I mean, how can you do anything but love a great, big teddy bear with a heart the size of Wyoming like that?????? And Mick, when are you going to bring the incredible woman who puts up with you the rest of the year so she can see why you're so crazy about us the same way we're crazy about you? I was disappointed that Max didn't stay very long, and I sure missed seeing MMario and Jeff (Pene). It was a treat getting to meet Morticia. What an amazingly powerful and clear, bell-like voice coming from such a small woman. And a wonderful dead-pan delivery on the song parodies. I finally got to actually meet Gutbucketeer, Fortunato, LaMarca, and Annamil and Glen face to face. Fine, gracious people, all of them. I somehow managed to miss doing that last year, even though we were all there at the same time, and in some instances, in the same room. It was great meeting Willie O, and Homeless and his girlfriend. In person, Willie O reminds me a little bit of Little Hawk. I think I would love to have an opportunity to be in the same room at the same time with both of them. I somehow managed to miss meeting, or even seeing Edmund and Charmion. I don't know how that happened seeing as how I'm always on the lookout for Canadians anyway ;-) Charlie Baum amazes me. The impression I have of him is that he is never without a smile on his face. And the people who worked so hard (in some cases, despite being profoundly tired, like Ferrara), did an excellent job, once again. It was, in my opinion, a wonderful and very successful Getaway. Highlights for me were Friday evening in the dining hall listening to folks jamming, and the Saturday night jam in the Mudcat cabin. My (our) time at the Getaway was somewhat abreviated (didn't stay Sunday night) because Rob and I had to get back to Shepherdstown and finish packing my stuff for the big move to Georgia on Monday. Biggest highlight for me, without question, was when my dear, sweet husband sang a song about me (us) that he wrote himself at the Saturday night concert. (And watching the people in the row in front of me craning their necks looking around the room, and saying, "who's Carol?" |

The look on Vixen's face in Rick's accompaniment workshop when, after only a few minutes of instruction, she realized she was playing right along with him. Hearing Darriel say, sometime around the time he was leading the Pub Sing workshop, "What's happening to me? I used to hate folkies. Now I am one." Thinking something along the same line when I realized I was taking part in a song circle. Being surprise at how many people made a point to introduce themselves to me, and how quickly I felt at home with so many. Singing where someone else could hear for the first time since high school, and having the entire room join in singing rather than the entire room laughing at me. |

Sam has really only been playing the hammer dulcimer since this summer. He actually has become an avid cymbalom fan, but we, of course, don't have a cymbalom. I mentioned to Sam that I owned a hammer dulcimer, and he said, "You do?! Where?" I replied, "In your closet." He dragged it out, we tuned it up, and he was off. He's learned a few tunes and has practised playing along with the cymbalom on the CD's by Harmonia (the slow parts). |

Sometimes I've wondered if the magic might fade-after all, nothing could top last year-but every year has brought me fresh joys. Old friends, new friends, laughter, and music so emotionally powerful that I am a hopeless addict. As Dean relates above, some of my own favorite moments include the interlude by the dumpster-thank you, Rick! and watching my son Samuel's face light up as he told me about playing along in the jam-thank you again, Rick! Seeing Kendall again was a joy, and I, along with everyone else in earshot, was knocked off my chair by the Gospel Quartet. I enjoyed so many people, and so many songs... but I must mention how thrilled and moved I was when I heard Sheila Thorpe sing. I've heard her sing over many years, and always enjoyed her, but she was amazing last weekend. More later. Love to all, Carly Gewirz |

I say Dani can keep herself in plenty enough trouble without our help, but we adopted her against her will and our better judgement and we are stuck with each other. Singing Annie's shanty was great fun, but until we saw our three names posted together here we hadn't realized we should have called ourselves the "Eee" sisters. She is the only one I've ever met who knows the songs I can't find anywhere else. At her American Traditional songs workshop I actually found someone else who knows Dicky Bird..... but with just enough folk process to keep it intesting. And then in the dinning room when we broke out into Baby Owlet and sang it through while she instanally catalogued the variences.... By that stage on Sunday my brain was too fried to really notice...Judy's only found one other person who knows Baby Owlet... Jean Ritchie... Wonder how it made it's way to a Girl Scout Camp in the Berkshire Hills??? I've started going through the video and cataloging what is on each. This takes more discipline than I can muster. If I stop to watch each song...well there's about eight hours worth .... more later. |

I knew I was gonna kick myself for missing the Kipling workshop - I REALLY wanted to go - but I was too worn out to trudge up that hill. The moon was great! Rita, please schedule that again next year. There were two sessions going on simultaneously Fri night in the dining room. One of them involved Ken Schatz, Barry Finn and lovely old folk songs such as "Poison Ivy" and "Love Potion #9." If anyone on earth should record a CD who hasn't already, it's Dan Schatz. "...or could it be we were just boys, in the old days." I LOVE that song!!! As fine as any modern song I've heard, finer than most. In my opinion. |

That was Great!" to everyone's favorite memories. One highlight for me that hasn't been mentioned much was The Missing Person Soup Kitchen Gospel Quartet - three of the nicest folks I've ever met. Their concert Sunday morning was super: tight, true harmonies that did not in the least obscure the melodies; syncopations, Bill's incredible bass, and lyrics like that Lotus Dickey song about Adam & Eve "pair in a paradise, bare there were they." Another memory I don't want to lose was the amazing almost full moon (the one in the sky!). Did anyone snap a picture of that? Assorted highlights: -- The Pub Sing workshop (definitely should be a keeper for next year!). Lots of raucous, rollicking fun! -- The Jewish Songs workshop. OK, I'm biased since I lead it, but I thought we got a nice mix of songs; some Hebrew, some English, even a bit of Yiddish. -- Ken Schatz's concert (actually, the only one I managed to catch...) -- Having Dwayne and Sheila Thorpe back again this year! -- The Kipling workshop. I've been wanting to work some of filk writer/performer Leslie Fish's Kipling settings into my Open Sing/Getaway reportoire. Sheryl and I did her "Pict Song" and "Danegeld" settings, which seemed to go over well. -- Jan's (Ron Davies' wife) song in the Sea Songs session, which has been earworming for the past two days (that's the "and he played his ukelele as the ship went down" song with all the hand motions). And of course seeing all the Mudcat folks and the FSGW folks and the other folks I only see at the Getaway. 'Twas great singing with y'all again and meeting Morticia and WillieO and the other new folks! (And I promise I'll try and make more than two or three posts between now and next Getaway!!) -- Gary |

I am sure that will be the case here as I find myself wanting to thank so many for their special contributions to my Getaway experience. As it was at the Getaway, I will make no effort to separate 'Catters from FSGW folks. I am happy to report that those distinctions have been blurred forever. Thanks to: Ron - whose amazing ability with the viola was matched by his memory of lyrics - especially those of that wonderful song (mentioned above) about dreary, long folksongs which he portrayed so well. Dani - who set aside her fears and dreads to join Annie and Janie on stage for that hillarious shanty. It was a joy to see her on stage at last. Charlie - whose "Pharoah" spiritual/holler was one of the coolest things I have ever heard. Willie O - whose almost expressionless delivery of his music belies the soul he puts into it. Gail - who shared so many of her English childhood ditties and music hall songs as well as her remarkable sense of humor. I thank her for all of it. Mantid(s) - especially the male of the species who shared a song his father helped to invent and which Kendall was amazed to recognize. Keith - whose widely varied song store included "Everglades" which he sang after I went to bed (but I heard it anyway, thank you!). Mick - whose sense of humor is his greatest gift and whose songs so often touch my soul. David - who can pull more tunes out of his enormous harp that anyone could ever imagine. There was a moment during Sunday night when his playing combined with two or three fiddles, a viola, a mandolin and perhaps a guitar or two. I wish I could tell you which tune they played; but whatever it was put me closer to heaven than a living being has the right to be. Homeless - who emerged from behind his shyness to share some wonderful songs with us all. - to a small boy who so excitedly accosted me in the parking lot to tell me all about a bug his sister had found. Dick - who finally remembered all of the verses to "Dropkick Me, Jesus, Through the Goalposts of Life" and sang it just for me. Sinsull - who shared songs that rarely have seen the light of day. I don't know where she gets these things! Tinker - whose streetwalker ballads and blues were absolutely delightful. Max - who, like all of us, made the effort to extricate himself from "real life" long enough to share some of his music. I'm sorry that his worldly obligations and car trouble prevented his being there more. Morticia - who, besides sharing her wonderful humor and parodies, took a few minutes to catch me up on happenings at home and to speak of other things beyond the here and now. That was special. - to the guy whose name I have mentally filed under "D", but cannot recall. I found myself really appreciating his proclivity toward collecting odd instruments. I was fascinated by his explanations of the mechanics of the "small pipes". Last year I learned how to operate a hurdy-gurdy. Rick - who, despite my overall ignorance, made me think for a moment or two that I really understood what he patiently tried to teach to me. It is probably one of those kinds of things that will someday produce an "Ahah!" moment. I hope. Bill D. - whose wry humor seems to be part and parcel to every song he knows -- and he seems to know them all! Judy - who can take a song and turn it into a small play by her wonderful use of facial expressions and mime. She is a joy to watch as well as to hear. Thanks to all these and so many more for making memories that will live in my soul forever. |
