Has anyone heard of the Wayfarers?

From: Hrothgar Date: 24 Oct 02 - 05:55 AM The Wayfarers were the resident folk group at the Brisbane Folk Centre from when it started in 1962 (?) until it closed in 1977. They are still playing Wednesdays at the Kookaburra Cafe in Brisbane (after about 150 changes in membership!). The original members were Stan Arthur, Bob Stewart, Garry Tooth, and Theo Bosch. Stan, a long time collector and enthusiast, has been the constant that has kept the group going. Bob has been back with the group for the last few years after a long break. Garry Tooth (the best male voice the Wayfarers ever had) now lives down in the Blue Mountains behind Sydney - and still turns up at National Folk festivals. Haven't seen Theo for many years, but I believe he is still living around Brisbane somewhere. The original group produced an LP in about 1964 or 65 (one of the first records I ever owned - it disapeared many years ago), and later manifestations issued a few CDs of stuff like "Aussie Drinking Songs" which sold a few copies, I think, but weren't really vintage folk music. After all this, though, I think the Ripley Wayfarers might be the ones Linda is seeking. |

They made several albums under both names. Their last group was called "Rogues Gallery" and made at least one album under that name. If you can get to the Brewtown Folk Club at Burton on Trent on Friday 29th Nov Mick Pete will be appearing with John Squire and would I'm sure be happy to chat to you. Mick Pete currently presents a Radio folk prog on Radio Derby on Monday nights with Lester Simpson of Coope, Boyes and Simpson. They were residents at Preston Folk Club at one time. The line-up varied over time (as usual with most amateur or semi-pro groups) but included Ian Gartside and Brian Preston (known as Brian Dewhurst in those days). Both of them still perform around the north-west in various groups.

There are at least two other albums by the group, "Live at the World's Fair," (that would have been Seattle), and an LP of Civil War Songs. I have another LP from 1956 called "The Wayfarers". It was composed of Paul Blaine an operatic baritone, Ilka Sylvern a soprano, and Lee Schaefer a "singer of jazz and pop songs" They do folk material probably more from the Richard Dyer-Bennet school of folk performance. The album notes also say that they have "an ever-growing following" so they should be really big soon. rich r

I had a really scratched up copy of the 'Come Along' With the Wayfarers album but my brother found a good copy and made (don't tell anybody. I don't suppose it's piracy because I DO have the original) on CD that turned out well. A couple of guys who were in the Wayfarers moved Charleston, SC here in the mid-70s. They opened up a bar/nightclub downtown called "The Whale's Tail' and I used to go listen to them. I'm trying to look up whoever was in that band, but one guy was Ray Bluen (sp??) and the other guy just called himself Whale (because he liked whales) and the two of them playing and singing together sounded just like the old band. They called their duo "Beresford Creek" after a little body of water down here. They had a big cause to keep Charleston from getting too big and ruined like they saw happen to Southern California. Alas, the Whale's Tail' went under and I lost touch with the guys. |

The group broke up in the mid-sixties and two of the Wayfarers opened a folk club in Charleston, South Carolina. I was a member of a USO show that was in Charleston South Carolina to catch a military transport. We stopped by to say hello and that was the last time that I saw or heard from them. I also have a copy of the Hungry i album. |

When I knew them, they were all young men with a lot of enthusiasm for the folk genre. Another of their memebers is a retired Superior Court Judge in Calif. Sean now records Christian music and is himself a born again Christian. One of the hi-lites of my life while living in San Francisco was the opportunity to know and hang out with these guys. |

Along with Brian Dewhurst, Dave Peter and, along the way Jed Pinder and Steve Ococks, we were a successful folk band playing clubs, universities and other gigs, We made two LP's and toured Holland as well as appearing on Folk on Friday a few times. We performed and recorded from 1961 thru 1966. Dick and I continued to perform until the mid 70's while I finished up grad school in Charleston, SC. We were joined by Buddy Owens and called ourselves, Beresford Creek... a " folk grass " group. The Wayfarers have gone their separate ways. Dick passed away several years ago of a rare disease. Sean went on in music and formed the folk rock group, The Music Machine and had a couple of hit songs, the biggest being " Talk, Talk ". Tom, like myself, went on to grad school. His bent was in Law and he was a respected attorney in Santa Barbara. He now currently serves as Superior Court Judge in California. I finished my grad degree and taught college econ at two colleges, the latter in western Virginia before retiring. Sean continues to write and perform and specializes in Christian music. He is based out of Porterville, CaliforniaI also continue singing as a solo folksinger out of Lexington, Va. and I also perform with the eclectic acoustic quartet, The House Mountain Group. Tom and I continue to work " regular " jobs as well. Of the four of us, three were veterans: Tom and Dick USN and I, USCG. Life is good and oh, the stories we could tell. Ray Blouin |

He and his buddy 'Whale' (I can't remember his real name) opened a bar downtown Charleston called 'The Whales' Tail' but it didn't go over. I sure loved to listen to them and drink a pitcher of beer. I lost track of him after he moved to (W.) Virginia. I don't think 'Whale' is with us anymore. I think 'The Whale's Tail' folded because it was very hard to find and word didn't get around and of course they weren't doing 'mainstream' music. I know it wasn't because of the music, because that was GREAT! |

Dad went onto live in London and worked as a member of the band called the Home Service who were part of several National Theatre productions in the 80's,most band members also doubled up with small Acting roles. Nowadys he still absorbs himself with music,albeit mostly Digital,but still performs at Dance classes with his wife,she teaches clog dancing and they often help produce/write & play at local productions.They live in Belper,Derbyshire and own 3 Vet surgeries ! The Wayfarers i am a bit rusty with,although i often see Mick Peat,and sometimes Barry Renshaw. |

I remember, but don't know, the "Ripley Wayfarers". The "Wayfarers" I do/did know were those featuring Brian Dewhurst (aka Preston) hailing from the place of the same name. There seem to be others although possibly hailing from somewhere in the US. |
