Subject: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: GUEST,Bloke in the Corner Date: 29 Oct 02 - 08:03 PM Well, after tonight's excellent session at the Carnival, I sense a real interest in moving there. The advantages are obvious - much nicer place, comfy chairs, very friendly and pro-music landlord/lady, we can have run of the room on Tuesdays, she will always do sarnies and chips, toilets are not disgusting, beer is miles better, and the acoustics are fine, much to my surprise. There's nothing more to do than decide where we'll meet next week and turn up. So let's air our views on this thread & maybe come to a decision based on consensus. I REALLY did enjoy being there tonight, though...

Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: Skipjack K8 Date: 30 Oct 02 - 08:42 AM Whilst last night was an enjoyable romp, I have to admit to having become institutionalised at the dear old Sloop, Bloke, so I would prefer to return to the old dive. |

Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: KJ Date: 30 Oct 02 - 01:26 PM Call it sentimental but we much prefer the Sloop. |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: Oaklet Date: 30 Oct 02 - 02:30 PM Laurie, all credit to yer and much thanks for arranging the Carnival session. It's a personal thing I know, but given a choice I really do prefer the Sloop. I admit that the toilets are a bit rich but the accoustic in the room is much better. If the Sloop becomes permanently sprouted, The Carnivore is an acceptable alternative, but does the venue have that much of a bearing? I am sure the crowd of mates present last night would have had as good a time in the bloody Vicar Inn in Twillingsgate. |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: Bassic Date: 30 Oct 02 - 11:52 PM Given a reasonable welcome by the new incumbents, then my vote would be 4 for Sloop. I know it dont make sence but it just seems to fit! |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: EBarnacle1 Date: 30 Oct 02 - 11:59 PM But where do PTH elect to play? |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: The DeanMeister Date: 31 Oct 02 - 04:57 AM Wherever we get paid the most, Barnie! Interesting to see that the South Bank having trouble with Session locations, too. |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: smallpiper Date: 31 Oct 02 - 05:31 AM I like the sloop BUT the landlord at the Carnival made us extremely welcome and I think it would be incredibly rude of us not to go back on a regular basis or at least for a couple of times whilst the sloop gets sorted ie is it going to be open or isn't it. Is it a temporary openning and will any new incumbants welcome us? It may be all very well going back to the sloop but if it subsequently closes the Carnival may not welcome us back so readily if we piss them off. I say let the people who originated the session decide (bloke in the corner and other southbankites) |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: Skipjack K8 Date: 31 Oct 02 - 07:29 AM The original Sloop session 'belongs' to the Ayatollah, and as he doesn't have a cyber voice, and may issue a fatwa, we ought to ask the old goat what he thinks. However, Smallplopper does make a valid point that welcome we received from the Carnival was fulsome, and we'd better not darken his door again if we sling our hook now. Difficult to know what to do to please the most people most of the time! |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: GUEST,Daithi Date: 31 Oct 02 - 10:03 AM For what it's worth ( as a newcomer - I'm the irish whistle player) I'd be happy to go back to the Sloop too - but we don't know how that will pan out just yet, so I'd agree with those who feel we shopuld keep something going at the Carnival, even if only to keep our long term options open. (also the chips were good). As for the beer, well the Guinness tastes just as bad anywhere.. |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: GUEST,Bloke in the Corner Date: 31 Oct 02 - 11:27 AM Ho hum, so many thoughts - all valid. I agree, there is a genuine nostalgie de la boue (that should give Oakleaf something to translate for his new job) about the Sloop, though we all know the parlous state of its future. And I agree about the Ayatollah of Bennettwalah. How about if we do the - part - compromise, and hold, say, the next four sessions at the Carnival, enjoying Gill's sarnies & chips, till we see how the Sloop pans out. If it REALLY looks like it is on for the long term we can always move back, I'm sure they'll be happy yo have their regular Tuesday night bibbers. But it would be a pity if we were to alienate the Carnival folk by returning to a venue which promptly closed after a few weeks. What thoughts, then on a 'suck it and see at the Carnival' (control yourself Oakley!) for the next couple of weeks? All replies in strictest lack of confidence. Love and kisses to all appropriate ones. |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: smallpiper Date: 31 Oct 02 - 01:41 PM I'm in total agreement Carnival for next four weeks or so |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: GUEST Date: 31 Oct 02 - 03:56 PM Seems a sensible compromise Bloke & after all it's not so far for us to stagger home. Try it for the next four weeks then? |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: GUEST,Bloke in the Corner Date: 04 Nov 02 - 07:09 PM Well, folks, I'll definitely be turning up at the Carnival tonight -5th November - and I hope all regulars will do too. We've got no schedule, no bosses, so we can go anywhere we decide. I just reckon a couple of weeks at the Carnival will be a nice change. Look forward to seeing all regulars there. By the way, last night in Brigg Mr Cunningham and Mr Bain managed to produce their usual heavenly sounds on a barrel of Scotch apiece! God bless the bibbers - lucky sods! |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 04 Nov 02 - 07:48 PM refresh 9for smallpliers), because he dident see it. |

Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 05 Nov 02 - 03:39 AM And on this side of the water tonight we have the acoustic workshop in the Sun Inn, Beverley. R |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: daithi Date: 05 Nov 02 - 05:34 AM Sorry I can't make it tonight , but hope you have a good one as usual! Will join you all in the Carnival next week though. Slán! Dáithí |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: Skipjack K8 Date: 05 Nov 02 - 09:53 AM Zoot alors! What to do? The Sloop was only closed for one week, and is now open for business again. They made us very welcome on Saturday night for the extraordinary session, and laid grub on. The beer was, it has to be said, excellent. The pub will struggle to stay open if we piss off, whilst the Carnival enjoys much stronger patronage, and has us on Saturday nights. If the Sloop folds period, I agree that we will have burnt our bridges at the Carnival, but there are several pubs that would no doubt bid for our session. I suppose decision time is at 8pm tonight, in which pub one turns up at, and I am torn between staying in and abstaining all night with Mrs S, or as I said at the top, voting Sloop. |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: smallpiper Date: 05 Nov 02 - 12:00 PM Yep the sloop was excellent on saturday - I didn't realise the carni had a session on sturday nights as well - now I'm not sure what to do! |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: bill\sables Date: 05 Nov 02 - 04:07 PM Why not go to the Sloop one week and the Carnival the next. It seems to work well with the G&D West Haddelsey every two weeks and some other pub on the other weeks. But I agree it was a great do last Saturday |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: Eric the Viking Date: 05 Nov 02 - 05:22 PM Yeah, wicked do on saturday, privalleged to be there with such fine musicians. Smallpiper-the pipes were excellent. And, as Bill says-it seems to work pretty well for us, to swop venues every week. I thought the room was pretty good considering, you could have a room half that size with worse acoustics. Oh well not my decision anyway. but good luck in your choices. |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: daithi Date: 07 Nov 02 - 09:41 AM So how ( and where!) did it go on Tuesday this week? More to the point though, is it Carnival or Sloop next Tuesday(nov 12)? Want to bring a friend over and prefer to get the venue right! Dáithí |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: GUEST,smallpiper Date: 07 Nov 02 - 11:41 AM Thank you Eric. I was kidnapped and ended up at the Sloop (as did most people) and it was excellent - next week lets do it again! |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: GUEST,Bloke in the Corner Date: 07 Nov 02 - 06:03 PM Looks like the Sloop wins it, it's a pity about the Carnival, though, Gill laids on loads of grub last Tuesday, which didn't get eaten. Suppose we'd better let the Carnival slip for a while... just hope the Sloop doesn't keep on losing bar stewards. Ho hum, see you there next Tuesday. Note, please, we have 30 German schoolchildren in Barton next week, some may well come to the session, though I assume none will bring an instrument. Make them welcome, as we did two years ago. |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: My guru always said Date: 08 Nov 02 - 09:24 AM Hang on, no-one told me about these German schoolchildren in Barton next week..... Our session is the week after so they're a bit early! |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: GUEST Date: 08 Nov 02 - 09:34 AM Surely people go to sessions for the music, not the food & the toilets |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: Skipjack K8 Date: 08 Nov 02 - 10:40 AM Music? This is a drinking session, with cottaging for them as wants! Music? Strewth........... |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: daithi Date: 11 Nov 02 - 04:30 AM So...definitely The Sloop tomorrow night then? |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: Oaklet Date: 11 Nov 02 - 05:16 AM I'll ask them to make the toilets to be made especially inviting in time for Tuesday's naked bassonist and cottaging evening. |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: daithi Date: 11 Nov 02 - 05:37 AM I'll take that as a yes then.. (BTW, I suppose the bassoonist WILL be blowing his own trumpet?) |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: Oaklet Date: 11 Nov 02 - 05:52 AM I think I rushed my last message and it didn't make a lot of sense. No change there then. See you at the Sloop, Daithi. |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: smallpiper Date: 11 Nov 02 - 05:58 AM No change eh oaklet I'm glad to know all is well with the world - you want picking up again? |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: Skipjack K8 Date: 11 Nov 02 - 08:09 AM I'm in the beautiful south tomorrow, but if I come over the wold in time, I will attend with aerophone. Good luck with the Toilet Duck. Power you can aim. |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: Oaklet Date: 11 Nov 02 - 01:22 PM I am in Coventry tomorrow, researching for my biography of Linda Kelly. If I'm back, I'll collect my janitorial sundries and head Sloopwards, either on foot or in the Smallpiperwagon. I'll have to touch base later, old fruit. |
Subject: RE: CARNIVAL vs SLOOP - decision time From: GUEST,Bloke in the Corner Date: 11 Nov 02 - 03:38 PM See plenty of you in the jolly old Sloop tomorrow, folks, the more (musicians) the merrier. |
