I caught the opening night of this tour last Friday and was blown away! If you're in the vicinity of one of the venues listed below (I've copied the blurb from Folkworks' site), then do yourself a favour. You know it's going to be a quality night out ... but just HOW quality has to be experienced!

English Roots
National Tour, November & December 2002

The current emphasis and enthusiasm for Celtic music has deservedly brought Irish music to a wide audience; in Scotland the scene is thriving with a huge number of performers proud of their regional music, but it seems that English music in its own right has been overshadowed and has not been widely regarded with the same pride and 'ownership' of the music. However, there are many musicians dedicated to showing that English music is as exciting and vibrant as its Celtic counterparts and Folkworks English Roots tour features just some who have been active in researching and pursuing some of the great tunes, songs and dances of the English tradition.

This tour features Eliza Carthy, Martin Carthy, Tim van Eyken, Robert Harbron, Norma Waterson and Chris Wood as individual performers and in a variety of combinations and the four members of Waterson:Carthy have been working on new material especially for this tour. Dog Rose Morris's exuberant bursts of dance will show English dance at its best - with plenty of daylight beneath the feet! It promises to show the English tradition as one we really can be proud of!

I went to the Sawston venue last night with RolyH and friend, was truly amazed by the whole evening, reawakened my interest in ballads.
Dog Rose Morris really have to be seen to be believed, "Morris with altitude and attitude" is how the programme described them, and I think that's about right.
Anyone in the vicinity of the above list should see if they can still get a ticket, we won't get treated to a performance like this until the Arts Council (bless their cotton socks) cough up some more dough to help the tradition survive.
Oh what a luverly night, and on the off chance that any of them might read this thread, THANK-YOU,you took me back to a time I hadn't realised I missed so much.

The buggers stole the idea from the Demon Barber Roadshow though didn't they?

Can only echo what okthen has said.It was a brilliant evening and not taken over by the Carthy's. Chris Woods 'Lord Bateman' was the highlight for me.Would recomend anyone near the remaining venues to go.

English folk at its best.
