Subject: VIOLIN AND CONCERTINA STOLEN From: GUEST,Kathy Wallis Date: 06 Dec 02 - 01:32 PM Mike O'Connor and Taffy Thomas' car was broken into in Liverpool City Centre last night. All the contents of the car have been stolen including MAURICE GRANDJON VIOLIN, 1896, unique label, Hill Bow plus one other, LACHENAL 30 button C/G concertina NUMBER 133139. Mike and Taffy are at the start of their Christmas tour and they are both devastated. If anyone hears of these instruments being offered for sale or hears anything, please contact Liverpool Police immediatley. Please pass this message on and give it out at clubs etc. Thanks. |

Cause that's what insurance agents are there for, not to act like a huge asshole about someone else's misfortune. (Ya dipshit.) We'll do what we can by passing the word around, and hope that it triggers something. In response to the crass remarks of unsigned GUEST and gargoyle who would rather kick people when they are down, I'll point out that, on one occasion, in similar circumstances to this incident (going to get food after a folk club) I took my instrument with me, rather than leave it locked in the car. I was the victim of an attempted mugging. Fortunately they got more opposition than they expected and left empty handed. The car seems now seems like the safest option. I'll reserve my comdemnation for the sticky fingered bastards who can't keep their hands off other peoples property, and the morons that condone them by criticising the victims. I hope you all get what you deserve. Brian |

We had a fantastic evening of stories and song and a very tasty Wassail cup was passed round for all to enjoy. We all, of course, appreciate that someone elses fiddle is just not the same as your own, but after the shock of losing the instruments and also the despoiling of Taffy's beautiful van, they both rose the occasion, as one would expect, and a great time was had by a packed room-full |

There are ways for gigging musicians to secure instruments inside their ways to prevent theft, one very good one being the investment of large, locked boxes like those that carpenters use. And I DO hope that insurance will at least allow the musicians to replace their instruments with new ones. At the moment, it will seem as though the new instruments won't be able to replace what was stolen, that often turns out not to be the case (I'm an eternal optimist, especially when this sort of thing comes at a time of year when many musicians earn a large part of their annual income). |

These type of things have a nasty habit of turning up at these places. Often or not, the people who stole the items, need a quick pound, and know they can get at least £20 by selling them on to these people (who don't have a clue where things like this come from, and usually don't have a clue about their value). A friend of mine had his flute stolen in Cardiff, and spent the rest of the day wandering around the second hand shops. He eventually found it, in a second hand junk shop. It was in the window for sale for £20!!!! It was worth well over £500. Anyways, this particular vendor was smart and had the name of the person he bought the flute from, so he was arrested. So, Kathy, can you get a whole load of people to wander around the second hand shops in the Pool? It is very unfortunate that this happened to them, and all my sympathies, having lived near Liverpool once, we had our house broken into over Christmas - whilst we were at our family in the South. So I wouldn't have even thought about leaving a jot in my car in Liverpool - unfortunately it's a common thing and very upsetting to those it happens to. It ruined our christmas that year! Put a deadbolt on the door, and on the hinge side took out the middle screw from one half of each hinge and unscrewed the opposite middle screw part way and hacksawed the head off. Then when the door was shut the sawn screw fit into the empty hole where the other screw had been and if anyone tried to remove the door by removing the hinge pivot bolts, the door wouldn't move. |
