Mike O'Connor and Taffy Thomas' car was broken into in Liverpool City Centre last night. All the contents of the car have been stolen including MAURICE GRANDJON VIOLIN, 1896, unique label, Hill Bow plus one other, LACHENAL 30 button C/G concertina NUMBER 133139. Mike and Taffy are at the start of their Christmas tour and they are both devastated. If anyone hears of these instruments being offered for sale or hears anything, please contact Liverpool Police immediatley. Please pass this message on and give it out at clubs etc.
Thanks.

Oh, what a shame! I hope the instruments turn up! They sound pretty unique and hopefully hard to fence!

Hmmm, whilst tidying the dining room yesterday, I found a concertina.... something Manitas has failed to share with me....?

Seriously, there have been good results with stolen instruments in the past because of postings here, the more people that know the better.

Good luck.

Leaving valuables in a car in Liverpool City Centre is a pretty naive, not to say stupid, thing to do

OBVIOUSLY....they were not imporatant to you!!!

When you VALUE Some-Thing!!! say...your wallet, or child...or the groceries....you normally BRING THEM INSIDE.

These appear to be minor concerns....if they were cherished possessions (and worthy of noting to the mudcat) you would have treated them with the respect (big>YOU now claim they deserve.

Sincerely,
GARGOYLE

Your insurance agent!!!

Thank you for sharing, "Blame the Victim".

I reckon we all know that there is an element of insecurity of leaving your instruments in a car, or on a stage, or in your house...

and would prefer to chain them (all of them ) to our wrists, but that's not always feasible.

ANyway, I'm sure that Mike and Taffy will be glad when Garg the insurance agent cuts them a cheque. Cause that's what insurance agents are there for, not to act like a huge asshole about someone else's misfortune. (Ya dipshit.)

Something happens to my gear, it's like losing the proverbial pound of flesh. Let's hope the pieces turn up.

My violin was stolen last November, along with almost everything of value in my apartment. Thank God the bastards left my guitars alone.

Those guest postings are thoughtless and unhelpful. as a gigging musician I've often agonised about leaving instruments in cars. especially when they were worth more than the vehicle! Hope they turn up soon I'll certainly keep my eyes open.

Kathy phoned us last night with this info, and we would like to send our sympathy (for what its worth), support and best wishes to Mike and Taffy.

We'll do what we can by passing the word around, and hope that it triggers something.

In response to the crass remarks of unsigned GUEST and gargoyle who would rather kick people when they are down, I'll point out that, on one occasion, in similar circumstances to this incident (going to get food after a folk club) I took my instrument with me, rather than leave it locked in the car. I was the victim of an attempted mugging. Fortunately they got more opposition than they expected and left empty handed. The car seems now seems like the safest option.

I'll reserve my comdemnation for the sticky fingered bastards who can't keep their hands off other peoples property, and the morons that condone them by criticising the victims. I hope you all get what you deserve.

Brian

The main danger is if the thieves don't realise the value of what they've stolen and chuck them away.

Thanks to the generosity of the folk world Mike was able to borrow a fiddle and a box and he and Taffy entertained us royally at the Word of Mouth Storytelling Club in Manchester the following night (1st Friday of the month at the Briton's Protection Pub - except January!). We had a fantastic evening of stories and song and a very tasty Wassail cup was passed round for all to enjoy.

We all, of course, appreciate that someone elses fiddle is just not the same as your own, but after the shock of losing the instruments and also the despoiling of Taffy's beautiful van, they both rose the occasion, as one would expect, and a great time was had by a packed room-full

The theft of musical instruments, especially for gig musicians, is always devastating, and they have my complete sympathy, not that sympathy makes up for much.

There are ways for gigging musicians to secure instruments inside their ways to prevent theft, one very good one being the investment of large, locked boxes like those that carpenters use.

And I DO hope that insurance will at least allow the musicians to replace their instruments with new ones. At the moment, it will seem as though the new instruments won't be able to replace what was stolen, that often turns out not to be the case (I'm an eternal optimist, especially when this sort of thing comes at a time of year when many musicians earn a large part of their annual income).

You should have done this, you should have done that. Its all so easy with hindsight, but when your out there gigin' we all take chances. C'mon gargoyle, Mr insurance man, give 'em a break. We all take chances? yeah. I sincerley hope Mike O'Connor and Taffy Thomas get thier instruments back.

Kathy

The only thing I can suggest is to get your friends to go to as many, second hand shops, pawn brokers, junk shops, tat and jumble shops. These type of things have a nasty habit of turning up at these places.

Often or not, the people who stole the items, need a quick pound, and know they can get at least £20 by selling them on to these people (who don't have a clue where things like this come from, and usually don't have a clue about their value).

A friend of mine had his flute stolen in Cardiff, and spent the rest of the day wandering around the second hand shops. He eventually found it, in a second hand junk shop. It was in the window for sale for £20!!!! It was worth well over £500. Anyways, this particular vendor was smart and had the name of the person he bought the flute from, so he was arrested.

So, Kathy, can you get a whole load of people to wander around the second hand shops in the Pool?

It is very unfortunate that this happened to them, and all my sympathies, having lived near Liverpool once, we had our house broken into over Christmas - whilst we were at our family in the South. So I wouldn't have even thought about leaving a jot in my car in Liverpool - unfortunately it's a common thing and very upsetting to those it happens to. It ruined our christmas that year!

I hope they find them though - best of luck!

Ella

I once made a secure closet in my house to protect instruments when I wasn't at home. Put a deadbolt on the door, and on the hinge side took out the middle screw from one half of each hinge and unscrewed the opposite middle screw part way and hacksawed the head off. Then when the door was shut the sawn screw fit into the empty hole where the other screw had been and if anyone tried to remove the door by removing the hinge pivot bolts, the door wouldn't move.

Kathy

Sorry to hear about Mike and Taffy's Loss.

For those of you unfamiliar with Mike, he wrote the song Shining Down on Sennen recently recorded by Martin Wyndham Reed. He is a member of Cornish Songwriters and produced the show 'Cry of Tin'.

Kathy are you John's wife?

Thanks for letting us know.

John

ol' gargoyle always has a way of taking a bad situation and making it worse with his cheerful admonitions.

PUT A SOCK IN IT greg!

I, too, hope the instruments are recovered in good shape and soon!
