Subject: Lyr Req: Three Ravens, newer version?

I heard a version of this on a Celtic radio show recently...different tune setting than I'd heard before, and seemingly different lyrics, if only slightly. The singer ws a woman whose name I did not catch, and the album it was from is called "Ravens" and, I gathered, relatively new. Anyone have the lyrics of this version?
thanks!

I don't know of any album called "Ravens," but Maddy Prior released an album called "Ravenchild" rather recently.

A version of Twa Corbies?

New and improved, with 150% more?

We generate links to searches on the CDDB database. May be worth trying - could pick the recording you are looking for.

Well, it's got ravens, and it's relatively new, and it's a lady singing, so it meets some qualifications, anyway. :)

IT might be this version of the Three Ravens .......... as opposed to the much longer Child Ballad

THREE RAVENS

The album is called 3 Ravens. The band is called Malinky and the singer was Karine Polwarth. I have the album and will try to post the lyrics at some stage. If anyone else can beat me to it feel free.

thanks Declan; I had thought the DJ said the album was just Ravens but I may have heard it wrong. The version is quite modern sounding...but it is the closest thing lyrically to what I would like to work on. Whenever you get to it, that would be lovely!

Hi Peg. As Declan says, the band is Malinky and the CD is called 3 Ravens. I also play in the band and I'm delighted that you liked the track. Can you satisfy my curiosity and tell me which station you heard it on? Lots of DJs don't realise it's called "3 Ravens" coz the 3 is a number, rather than a word. If you like the album, please tell your friends. All the best,
m.d.

I heard the track on A Celtic Sojourn, which originates on WGBH in Boston (PBS affiliate). The host is Brian O'Donovan. You can email him at Briano@celticradio.com, but when I have done so I have never gotten a reply. Met him in person though and he is wonderful.
He will be at thebig celtic music fest in Scotland in the new year.
I do like the track so I will look for the CD! Are the lyrics contained in the liner notes?

Mark, I too like the track. Heard it on Travelling Folk recently and would like to get the album. (And anybody who likes this one should get their first album, Last Leaves!) Are you at any time next year coming back to Germany to tour? Tried to send Steve an eMail the other day, but it bounced - which is why I'm misusing this thread. Sorry!

Wow! Firstly, Hi Declan - how's it going? Thanks for the kind words, I'll pass them onto the rest of the guys.
To Peg. Yup, the lyrics are in the sleeve (we tried to make the sleeve notes reasonably comprehensive) and there are even pictures of us (ooooh). The catalogue number is CDTRAX233, if you wanna chase it. Our previous offering, "Last Leaves" is CDTRAX190. Hope you enjoy it/them.
Susanne - Yes, we are touring Germany again in March 2003 and are looking forard to it hugely. We had an absolute ball last time around. Dates are 5th - 16th March. Fuller details can be found at www.malinky.com and you can e-mail any or all of us there.
We'll keep any eye open for Brian O'Donovan at Celtic Connections as well.
Thanks again.

You know it's a very bad sign when two members of the same band are tuning into web discussions about their own stuff!! But Mark sent me the link so here's the words for the Malinky version - adapted from lyrics in Emily Lyle's "Scottish Ballads" and learned from a singer called Susan Thores.

enjoy the album if you can find it!

and yes we go to germany march 5th-16th next year - more details on our website www.malinky.com coming soon.

and finally hello declan - see you in dublin sometime.

Cheers

Karine Polwart

THREE RAVENS

Three ravens sat upon a tree
Hey doun, hey derrie day
Three ravens sat upon a tree
Hey doun
Three ravens sat upon a tree
And they were black as black could be
Singing la do an la do a day

The middle ane said tae his mate
"Oh where shall we our dinner get?"

"It's doun intae yon grass green field
There lies a knight that's newly killed"

His horse was standing by his side
And thought he might get up and ride

His hounds were lying at his feet
And they licked his wounds sae sore and deep

There came a lady full of woe
As big wi' child as she could go

She's stretched herself doun by his side
And for the love of him she's died

I was in Ireland and Scotland back in October and heard the buzz about Malinky - lots of people had very good things to say about them. I have listened to samples on the website - love it and plan to order it (money's a bit tight at the moment, unfortunately!)Both CD's can be ordered at www.musicscotland.com , and it says on the site "Free Delivery Worldwide". To the members of the band that have posted, great work and it sounds like the band is doing well and keeping busy which I'm happy to hear!
Best regards,
Mary

I was wondering about this one; thanks for the information, Karine. The text above (how much has it been adapted?) comes from a collection made by Andrew Crawfurd, that wasn't available to Child or Bronson. It appears in Emily B. Lyle's Andrew Crawfurd's Collection of Ballads and Songs, vol.I, 1975. Crawfurd noted it from Mary MacQueen (Mrs. Storie) of Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, between 1826 and 1828 (information from the Roud Folk Song Index).

I don't have the books, so I don't know what the tune is like; but the text is very close indeed to that quoted by Child in E&SPB vol.V p. 212 (Additions and Corrections), and which was noted from tradition in Lincolnshire in the early 19th century. It's unusual to find a text in this form from a Scottish source, though Motherwell published a tune with just the one verse in 1827.

Hey, what a treat to have Maliky band members posting here!

I haven't heard "3 Ravens" yet (it's on my Xmas list), but I've got "Last Leaves" and I love it! "Whaur Dae Ye Lie" is in my Top Three favorite all-time songs -- absolutely devastating.

Any chance of a US tour?

Cheers,
Michael

Blatant plug:

Malinky will be appearing at Dunfermline Folk Club on the 8th of January. Tickets are on sale at £5 or £4 for members. Club meets in the Thistle Tavern, Baldridgeburn, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland at 8:30pm.

With typical bad timing, I have a meeting to attend earlier that night, so will probably only make it for the second half:-(

To the band: thank-you so much for such a splendid new album, a real treasure. First album was superb, this one is even better; can't wait for the next one!

Scott
