Hello and thanks for the warm welcome! Sorry to disappoint you - but I don't play the banjo. Some of my best friends are banjo players however; they usually tell the best banjo jokes.

I stole the name Honkytonk Sue from an old comic book series that was published in the '70's - Honkytonk Sue; the Queen of Country Swing. Couldn't resist!

If any of you live in the Vancouver BC area, I'm leading a Slow Pitch Jam workshop this coming Monday, Jan. 6th at the ANZA Club, 3 West 8th Ave., from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Come and join in on the fun!

I've been hearing good stuff about the Mudcatters, so look forward to meeting some interesting folkies.

Cheers,
HonkytonkSue

Welcome, HonkytonkSue. I wonder if you know a Vancouver fiddler named Carley Williams. She's in the Scottish.Cape Breton scene and is now in college in Eastern Canada. Nice person and talented fiddler. Anyhow, welcome to our "hoose."

Welcome to the cat house  Café, Sue (or do you prefer "Honky?")  *G*  Vancouver's not too far from my stomping grounds (across the Columbia from "the other Vancouver), so we're practically neighbors!  (Do you ever make it to Folklife Festival in Seattle in May?)

Anyway, I'm sure you'll find the cats friendly, helpful, sometimes ornery, and even lucid at times.  Good to have you on board.

Genie

"I met a little bar-room queen in Memphis"
You probably haven't run into the late Dick Emery on your side of the pond, but as he used to say. "Hello honky tonk, you are awful; but I like you"
Welcome from the north of Scotland.......Giok

Greetings and welcome from the Right Coast. Hope all is well in Lotus Land. You've probably got some early flowers coming soon. Not us. I'm just in from snow blowing for over an hour (with a 12 hp). A couple of cups of tea and I'll finish the other half of a double driveway. It's not the foot of snow, it's the 50 mph winds. No wonder so many of my cousins moved to your area years ago !!

Other than those few nuggets, scratch away...

And welcome...

Hi there,

I've had some inquiries about the Slow Pitch Jam, so will try to explain.

It's a method I developed with my pickin' buddy, Bob Underhill. We are both members of a bluegrass band called Rhythm Roundup, and spend a lot of time teaching beginners. Basically, it's a structured jam where we explain all the little nuances of jamming including such things as: keeping a steady rhythm with a group, learning about beginnings and endings, jam etiquette (e.g. taking turns soloing, playing to support singers, knowing when to join in) choosing material that works well in a jam, playing in many keys using capo and/or Nashville Number system... and lots more.

Songs are played SLOW, so everyone can join in regardless of level. Players are organized in groups of instruments, and instrumental breaks are done as a group, so everyone can help each other and the
'safety in numbers' factor makes people feel good about joining in.

We have produced two songbooks with play-along cds, which are available at www.rhythmroundup.com/slowpitch. There's also lots more info about the jams.

I teach a monthly Slow Pitch Jam at the ANZA Club in Vancouver BC, and also teach at music camps including the BC Bluegrass Workshop every August.

Hope that gives you an idea of what we do. By the way, the term Slow Pitch is from baseball - slow enough for everyone to join in.

Bye for now,
Honkytonk Sue

And I am way south of you in Long Beach, WA. We are hoping that you will join us in Rainycamp in February..8th?? I could be wrong on the date..God knows I screwed up Sasamat. And Sing Time Frolics south of Portland in mid-March.

First time I heard about nuances in jams. Sounds like I should take the class.
