Subject: Urgent Banjo Question
From: oombanjo
Date: 10 Jan 03 - 01:36 PM

To all who replied to my last question, Thank You.
If any one has a long neck can you give me the answers to two questions. firstly. I have an 11 inch pot, what is the length from the nut to the bottom of the pot . Secondly, what is the length from the nut to the bridge.
I am intending to put in a frailers scoop into the long neck, is this permissible , and how many frets should I take out for it.
I know! more than two questions, but it saves coming back later.

             Thank Oombanjo.

The length of the nut is the height of the person playing the banjo.

The length from the nut to the bridge should be equal to twice the distance between the nut and the twelfth fret, less about a tenth of an inch to allow for the action. As to the frailer's scoop, take out about 19 frets , cut it as deep as you like, and put the result in the dumpster.

the most urgent thing to do with a banjo is immediately after robbing a bank. You have to jump straight into a car and drive away playing Foggy Mountain Breakdown.

Remove all frets and fill slots with wood putty. It will sound better. Al

My pot is about 7 inches above the nut(s). That's because I'm left-handed like Elizabeth Cotton and Bill Staines but I never restrung my instruments so had to play upside-down. That was fine for me, but Elizabeth had a hell of a time keeping her skirt from flyin' up over her head. We had chicken tonight making the old saying from the depression, "A chicken in every pot" quite profound. When I was performing though I kept a rubber chicken inside my banjo pot so I'd have an excuse to tell fowl jokes while tuning. Never had to wear a jacket 'cause I already had a capon.

Oombanjo, If you have an 11-inch pot you are about the same circumference as a long-neck banjo neck already. Me, on the other hand, have a circumference the same as a Douglas Fir tree. I'm five foot seven inches tall and the tree is 140 feet tall. This proves what? I'd better go on a diet.

Also, the length from the nut(s) to my brige is about 2 & 1/2 feet. The bridge cost me at least as much as the whole damn banjo and I do suspect the dentist that made my bridge made out like a bandit. But I can eat anything now----apples, corn on the cobbb, beef jerky, hard water------hell, anything.

I also have a long neck and an 11 inch pot - but those are just my physical deformities. - try going on a diet and wear a BIG COLLAR!
Don't ask about the length from my nuts......
Quack!

No shortage of underhung male humor at this site, eh? And don't fuck up a decent vintage instrument, OK? Get a good frailin' and/or trade in the long neck banjo.
