From Alice's posting HERE, it looks as though you are looking for "Paddy's Lamentation."

Hope that helps.

"Paddy's Lamentation." A beautiful song about an Irishman fighting in the U.S. Civil War. I saw the movie but can't recall who sings it in the soundtrack. I'm sure other 'catters can fill you in on that. Maura O'Connell, who also has a cameo? Mary Black sang this with the Irish band De Dannan - a really fine version.

Yikes, when I was writing my reply, Kat was already on the ball with complete info. Didn't mean to be redundant. Kat and Alice's info will give you the lowdown.

About an hour into the movie there is a song being sung by a lady walking through the 5 points with the words "a kind loving husband and a good gentle wife". Anyone have any idea what the name of this song is?

I would also like to know what song that woman was singing as she walked by same as Ian, B. It was a beautiful melody!

Here is the complete soundtrack information for "Gangs of New York" at IMDb.

Of course it doesn't give any lyrics, so it may still be difficult to identify the song you want.

The OP requested "Paddy's Lamentation":-

Paddy's Lamentation - Mary Black (YouTube)

That and all other revival versions (Silly Wizzard, etc) are derived from Edith Fowke's recording of O.J.Abbott's "By the Hush, me Boys". He learned the song in early life on Ontario farms. The following link has short clips of all tracks from the album "Irish and British Songs from the Ottawa Valley", O.J. Abbott FW04051. Scroll down for "By the Hush".

Smithsonian Folkways - By the Hush, Me Boys - O.J. Abbott

The other request later in the thread appears to refer to "An Unconstant Lover" by Maura O'Connell:-
