Subject: Lyr Add: Sailor's Sheet Anchor (more grog) From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Feb 03 - 11:32 AM Here's another fine grog drinking song by Charles Dibdin from DIBDIN'S SEA SONGS: SAILOR'S SHEET ANCHOR, THE (By Charles Dibdin In Dibdin's Sea Songs, 1854 Edition, pp. 11-12) Chorus: Smiling grog is the sailor's best hope, his sheet anchor, His compass, his cable, his log, That gives him a heart which life's care cannot canker; Though dangers around him Unite to confound him, He braves them, and tips off his grog, 'Tis grog, only grog, Is his rudder, his compass, his cable, his log, The sailor's sheet anchor is grog! What though he be a friend in trust His prize-money convey, Who, to his bond of faith unjust, Cheats him, and runs away; What's to be done? He vents a curse 'Gainst all false hearts ashore; Of the remainder clears his purse, And then to sea for more. (CHO) What though his girl, who often swore, To know no other charms, He finds when he returns ashore, Clasp'd in his rival's arms: What's to be done? He vents a curse! And seeks a kinder she; Dances, gets groggy, clears his purse, And goes again to sea. (CHO) To crosses borne, still trusting there The waves less faithful than the fair; There into toils to rush again, And stormy perils brave – what then? (CHO) Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sailor's Sheet Anchor (more grog) From: MMario Date: 22 Feb 03 - 11:39 AM *grin* love these! Charley - if you have a bunch of related songs to post though, you CAN put them all in a single thread - and just change the subjectline of the post. makes them a little easier to find later. Does Dibdins have the music or just lyrics? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sailor's Sheet Anchor (more grog) From: GUEST Date: 22 Feb 03 - 11:42 AM This looks good! Do you know the tune? We have a song by Charles Dibdin in our repertoire (Baggyrinkle)entitled "Jack at Greenwich." Dave R. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sailor's Sheet Anchor (more grog) From: Schantieman Date: 22 Feb 03 - 11:46 AM Jack at Greenwich was recorded by Tundra (Doug & Sue Hudson) on 'Songs of Greenwich' years and years ago. Thank you for reminding me - I might just go and play it! Steve |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sailor's Sheet Anchor (more grog) From: Skipper Jack Date: 22 Feb 03 - 11:58 AM Yes that's right Schantieman! That is where we got the song from. I have blown the dust of Tundra's recording "Songs From Greenwich" The notes say that it was written by Dibdin in 1800 for one of his "Entertainments Sans Souci". Doug and Sue Hudson were an excellent duo. I recall booking them for my folk club at the time. That was back in the 70's. The LP is back on the turn table now! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sailor's Sheet Anchor (more grog) From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Feb 03 - 12:35 PM The book I have includes no tunes unfortunately but I bet someone with more research expertise can find them; however, it does include the wonderful steel engravings by George Cruikshank, i.e., the often reprinted "Saturday Night at Sea", which was one of the major reasons I could not resist purchasing this book.
