I just found out this evening that a good friend is being assigned to the Persian Gulf area as a cinematographer for NBC. I have promised to call his wife every day. I will wear a button for him every day until he gets safely back. My protest sign in Washington this week will have his name on it. One can never have too many angels on their shoulders in a situation like this.

I won't say anything about this Gawd Awful mess that we are supposed to make sense of.

I am sorry for your friend and his family, Walking Eagle; good for you for keeping him in your thoughts and actions. May he walk in safety.

My neice's husband was to ship out to Guam last Friday, but now it's been postposed to Tuesday maybe. I think they are waiting to see which way the wind, i.e. BS, blows. A lot of military folks are on hold, including several national guard or reservist units which have been in Denver since November, from all over the country when they were first called up. Apparently they've been living in appalling conditions in old airport hangars at Stapleton. According to news reports they are supposed to be moved to something better by next week.

I have two cousins and a dear family friend stationed in the Gulf right now. I'm awfully proud of them and I pray for their (and all other potential combatants) safe return every single day.

To all the folk that are being sent to the Gulf for whatever reason they are being sent for . They are in the hearts and spirits of those of us that can only watch and wait and pray for their safety. May the Angels watch over them every step of the way. .....sad times for the ones that go and for the ones that are left behind.
What can we say about this mess Walking Eagle. It is beyond words. May strength be with you.

We all pray for their safety.

Just one question - is he an NBC employee or a government employee assigned to help the media?

Having worked for NBC I have always been amazed at the choices people make.   Reporters and tech crews are not in bondage - they can quit their jobs if they disagree with the assigment. (It might not help them as a career move to do so, but they have the option at least.) However there is some sort of inner calling that drives them to be put in harms way to get stories like this. It is often forgotten that many members of the media lose their lives in conflicts like this.   Let us hope and pray for their safety, and remember the sacrifice that they make in order to pursue the truth.

Ron

I think what drove him is his family needs the money. He's an indie so he has worked on many projects, including some great documentaries. He has the 'legs' for it having worked in the Balkans conflict. He doesn't have the need to be where the action is. In a sense, what concerns me is that he's a little too laid back. I hope the survival mode takes over quickly when it is needed.

Amen to all the above postings.

Perhaps the reporters and techies choose to go because there's a chance that they'll perhaps have a chance to be truth-tellers.

Some are just adrenaline junkies.
Not all, but some. They are the guys who get the photo
inside the burning building or the death of the cop right beside them at a shootout. They are in the front lines with the troops and pissed if they are pulled back or can't move forward with them.
And some are just doing a job.
I've known some of both. May G-d walk beside them.

i am just now reading a book by the author of the horse whisperer,
Smoke Jumpers, which features a journalist. He sees appalling
things, but goes back after the battle to try to make things right.
Also now listening to Tony Hillerman's autobiography. Seldom Disappointed. He has had some awful experiences in WW2, and
went into journalism after returning to the states.
Best wishes to your friend, and safe return.
