Subject: TAB Req: Mandolin/Fiddle - Rigadoon Reel
From: Áine

I found this tune under the title Rigaudon Reel on Mary Bergin's CD, Feadoga Stain 2. She plays it in the same set as another reel, The Cameronion.

If anyone has a tab for either tune for fiddle/mandolin, or knows where I can get one, I'd be much obliged.

All the best, Áine

Áine ...

I've found a 2/4 tune from France called Rigadoun ... the abc follows. Otherwise the only "Rigadoon" I've been able to source is a Rigadoon Jig.

Let me know whether the abc seems like your tune and I'll tab it out. Should take me only a few minutes.

All the best.

Aidan

The Rigaudon began life as a Provençal dance, two or four-in-a-measure; a little like a bourrée. It became popular in the French court during the reigns of Louis XIII-XV, and became rather more formal as a result. It was popular in England for a while, too, and "Rigadoon" is the anglicised form of the name. Purcell wrote one as a harpsichord exercise. Two Rigadoons can be found via JC's Tunefinder; both are from the Winder collection, a set of MS tunebooks compiled by Edward and John Winder of Lancashire in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

I don't think either are the tune in question here (I was only able to hear a snatch of that; not enough to be sure where it began and ended) but the title, I'm afraid, may not be much help, as it's the name of the form rather than the tune. Did the sleevenotes give no indication of a traceable source?

Dear Aidan,

No, your abc is not the same tune -- But, I still would like to have your tab of it. Why don't I send you an mp3 of the two reels and see if you recognize them? The Rigaudon that's on Mary's CD is a very nice tune, and I think you'd like playing it - it reminds me in places of your own writing style.

I did find a tab of the The Cameronion on Co-Mando.com. I haven't opened it up in my Tabledit program yet, so I don't know if it's the same tune or not -- Here's keeping my fingers crossed!

Dear Martin,

Thank you so much for your inestimable knowledge on the 'rigadoon' and the reference to JC's tunebook. I'll check there in a minute or so and let you know.

All the best, Áine

Áine ...

Do that!

(Or better still ... post the mp3 to your website and post me the link. My connection at home is very slow!)

Aidan

Will do, Aidan!

And I did check the 'Rigadoon' files on JC's website, and neither one is the tune that Mary plays on her CD. Bugger! (pardon my french) ;-)

Hopefully, we'll solve the mystery when Mr. Crossey gets the sound file!

All the best, Áine
